Best bet... Sell it to someone on base for whatever you can get and apply that money to another car.

I would like to get a master degree, but not the one from University of Phoenix. I was wondering if anyone has studied in a japanese university to get an MBA in english, and could give advices. Also, is there any financial support I could get?

I am a current Temple University MBA student in Tokyo and use the GI Bill to cover the majority of the costs.  There are several scholarships available and not many of the students apply for them so they are almost easy to get.  Federal Student Aid works well also since it is an American university.  TUJ is the only foreign university to be fully recognised by the Ministry of Education so you can get a Student Visa if needed.

Other English based MBAs in Tokyo:

McGill (Canadian)
Waseda University
IUJ (not in Tokyo, but is a good MBA program -- live in style)

I have also heard that Sophia is offering an MBA in English starting this coming year, but I have not seen anything official.

If you want some more information on TUJ's MBA PM me.

Since your car is more than 10 yrs old, it won't be worth anything towards vehicle at a dealership.

Concur, back in 2002 I bought a 2003 ElGrand X fully loaded and paid close to $57K for it.  I was the only owner and kept it in immaculate shape and 100% dealer maintained with records maintained at the original dealer.  Back in November they offered me 30,000 yen for it.  Yes, that is about $300...  Their reasoning...it was almost ten years old.

Hello,

I have my security clearance back and am now able to apply for Full time positions. A few weeks ago I applied for two positions, but I have not received a call for a job interview. How long does it take for one to wait until the interview process? I am just wondering. I figured at this point either they were not interested in hiring me or perhaps the paperwork is still being processed. Also MWR has not posted job updates in about two weeks. Do they only post job updates once a month? Or is it just because they do not have new job updates? Or does it have to do with the hiring freeze? I am confused, so if someone knows anything I would love to know.

Since it has over a year of JCI left and about a year of driving mileage till the Auto Port recommends you change the timing belt at 100k, start selling it for $2K. Happy Selling...

No, I have not tried it before and I do not own or work at a dealership. The information is based on discussions I have had with MLCs, dealers and car lot sales agents during my recent car shopping trips. If you observe the prices what the vehicles for sale off base are (around that year), they aren't going for much, $2000 at best. So they aren't making much money on older cars. You should bring a Japanese speaking friend and inquire at the nearest dealer.

Yeah, I would have to agree. Probably not worth trading in. Most of my Japanese friends with normal cars >10 years old just have their cars junked.
If it passes a complete Japanese inspection they MIGHT give you something for it.

Best bet... Sell it to someone on base for whatever you can get and apply that money to another car.

Just thought I'd post this for anyone in Sasebo who may not be aware.  You can go to MWR and have them call the Saihi bus station to make a reservation for you to the FUK airport.  Bus stops at both international and domestic terminals, though there are more frequent stops at the international terminal.  You can always catch the shuttle that runs between the 2 terminals though.  There are buses leaving from Sasebo basically all day, every 20 or 30 minutes for much of the day.  This has worked well for me and my wife on several ocassions since all of our departing flights from FUK have been before the base bus would arrive and we get back to FUK long before the base bus would be leaving in the evening.  It is 2000 yen each way and you can schedule a round-trip ticket as long as your return trip is within 10 days of the departure.  If you need an early morning bus, as we have a few times, MWR will also call King Taxi to schedule for a taxi to pick you up on base.  Taxi fare is usually 1000 yen or a little less depending on traffic.

All you do is tell MWR what bus(es) you want and they call and make the reservation, using your phone number as the confirmation.  They write all this on the bus schedule and when you go to the bus station you just give them that sheet and they pull up your reservation.

Just an fyi.

"She doesn't have to manually input the weight or price since the product code & the scale do all the work and create the label."
....assuming the scale is problem, it should be easiest to verify between the two. A pound of butter weighs the same a a pound of cheese. To the manager, no big, oh well, the manager didn't assume anything. If an investigation were to happen the scale can be easily factored out.

We need a pet sitter for our two dogs (labradors) and one cat from June 18-Aug. 15.  We would prefer someone who would stay in our home with them.  We would pay for your time, provide food, internet, and a car during your stay.  Our home is very close to a beach and has a beautiful view of Sagami Bay; it is in the Akiya area of Yokosuka, close to Hayama.
Our dogs are 7 years old and are very friendly and calm.  Our cat is 6 years old and is very friendly also as soon as he gets over his wariness of a newcomer.
Please call Laurie at 090-6314-1544, if interested.  Thank you.

I'm so disappointed about it! I was looking forward to living in Negishi this summer.  So the people who will be stationed  in Yokohama will probably have to live off base?(Yokosuka & Ikego housing are too far  from Yokohama).  What about the kids' school? I wonder if they will pay for Yokohama International School.

Call Tricare as soon as you get stateside to make any changes to your account, it's pretty easy. I don't think you have to worry about where he will live but there will be a lot of things that come into play like whether he is ships company, etc... The first step is the request chits then visit the HHG office for further help. If all is approved then PSD will make the changes to his pay after they gather the approved chit, your new residence information etc. I'm not an expert but we are going through similar things. Each case is different so keep this in mind. The only thing that is for sure- No orders= out of pocket move ( unless there's an emergency etc)
Created:  05-20-2013 6:17 PM  |  Forum Category:  Departing From Japan

If he is in his window then they won't adjust (shorten) his orders to reflect the Unaccompanied change status after you left. But if he isn't in his window then they may approve the change to "unaccompanied" which may put him at a 2 year tour. Either way it goes the move WILL be out of pocket. As I stated earlier, you have to contact "outbound" movers at personal property. They will tell you to come in. As far as the price, it depends on weight, distance etc so each case is different.

I sent you an emai about the position.

I am so confused because one person says "if he's not in his window, it should be approved" yet...PSD says the navy won't pay for it unless he is in his window..?
Created:  05-20-2013 3:12 PM  |  Forum Category:  Shopping

that's assuming the problem is the scale & not the employee.

Where will he live? barracks? single sailor housing, etc? Any idea what the cost is to move HHG?
Created:  05-20-2013 2:53 PM  |  Forum Category:  Departing From Japan

As far as NOT being able to get BAH- that is why you send the request to change your husbands status to unaccompanied. As long as he isn't in his "window" he has a good chance of getting an approval.
Created:  05-20-2013 2:49 PM  |  Forum Category:  Departing From Japan

Your husband has to request to change his status to unaccompanied but first a request for you to return to the states.
The move will be out of pocket for you. He will NOT receive Cola or OHA but if the request is approved, he will receive BAH for your location.
Not sure about the Geo Bachelor stuff.
In order to get a quote for the move, go to the personal property office and they can assist you.

Good Luck
Created:  05-20-2013 2:20 PM  |  Forum Category:  Departing From Japan

Odds are, the Navy won't pay a dime of your move without orders.

I called PSD today looking in to an ERD for myself (dependent). The guy told me that unless orders are cut, it won't be a govt funded move. What orders, my ERD orders or my husband PCS orders to wherever he goes next?

I'm trying to understand it. His PRD is 2015, and I am trying to leave ASAP. Obviously, he isn't going to get his PCS orders anytime soon. So then it's on my own dime, is that right?

Will he go in to a geo-bachelor status? Will he have to move in to single sailor housing? Will he still get OHA/COLA and will a receive BAH in the states at the same time? I've asked all these questions to PSD but they are no help.

When the scale puts out the wrong weight, its time to get it calibrated. When you put in the ICE comment, mention that the commissary needs to update the calibration requirements for the scales to avoid over or under charging customers.

The best $1600 I spent on was an 11 yr old honda with 50k kilometers and one prior Japanese owner. Well, 70k kilometers and 9 yrs later, it is still running strong. I sometimes forget how vintage the car is compared to other vehicles around me.

I have been looking into getting newer car, but anything between 5 and 7 years old at the dealership is running 8k to 14k dollars. It all depends on what type of car you are intersted in. The auctions would be a great place to save money (planning for one tour) and compare what is out there.

At the insurance office on base you will two insurance compaines to choose from. AIU will give you an AIU USFJ Automoblie Insurnace 24 Hour Road Service Card to remind you what number to call when you need help.

My wife, son and I have been in Yokosuka now for about a year and half.  We were hoping to find a reformed background church of some sort near by, but have been disappointed so far.  We've made some contacts with a few reformed ministries in Chiba, Tokyo and Zama area, but there is nothing close enough to realistically attend regularly.  We currently attend the Calvary Chapel Kamakura church, but we miss friendship with like-minded fellow believers.

It occurred to me that maybe there are others in a similar situation around the Yokosuka area, so I figured I'd try to make contact.  If you are a reformed background Christian and are interested in getting together periodically to fellowship, please send me an email at jesse.cadd@gmail.com.

Anyone with a reformed background is welcome:

Lutheran
Presbyterian
Reformed
Reformed Baptist
YRR
Southern (or other) Baptists of the reformed variety
Even if you are leaning slightly reformed in your theology

Please note:  this is not intended to be a church (yet), but a gathering of like-minded Christians for the purpose of fellowship and discussion.  I am just trying to see if there is anyone else out there in a similar situation.  If enough people are interested and we find we have the numbers to make it work, maybe we could start something like a church down the road.  There would be lots of issues that would need to be discussed before that becomes a possibility.

Again, please send me an email at jesse.cadd@gmail.com if you are interested in getting together.

If you are in Yokosuka:
Kojima Denki near Homes, Yamada Denki near Kanazawa Hakkei on seaside line and Yodobashi camera at Keikyu Kamioka station all have converters, adapters etc.

It's always important to check the input voltage on each electrical/electronic item. I generally never had a problem in Thailand, but one time I messed up & plugged in a iPhone docking station. There was a loud POP then that terrible smell of electrical burning, and instantly trashed the docking station. 110 V appliances don't deal well with 220 VAC. Now when I buy anything, I try hard to get 110/220V appliances so I can move with ease between countries. Some items, like our iron, you have to manually switch between voltages but most items automatically detect the voltage & adjust.

I have a 2000 Honda CRV in excellent condition. I am trying to sell it so I can buy a van. The JCI is good til Sept 2014, and there's a 87k kilometers on it. It is Y plate. Where can I trade it in as a down payment for a van? Thanks in advance!

If you are just charging computer & phones, there's a good chance (at least in Thailand) that you'll need no adapter at all. Look at the input voltage specs written on your charger & most likely it says 100-220 VAC. If so, you'll need no converter. Furthermore, hotels in Thailand will have electrical sockets that fit U.S. plugs so no adapter will be needed. I just came home from 2 months of touring around Thailand and needed no adapter for my iPhone, Macbook, wife's Windows notebook, camera, etc.

Singapore, I'm not so sure but I suspect you'll find the same.

We are heading to Singapore and Thailand next week.  Anyone know if there is anywhere on base to get travel converter/adaprtors?  Both Singapore and Thailand use 220v.  Haven't seen them in the NEX.

Try Davenport University in Grand Rapids MI or Grand Canyon University in Phoenix AZ. They are not in Japan but they have great online MBA programs. Lots of scholarships available just google search online.

Follow on question.
Is there an adaptor to be able to use American screw on outdoor hose connectors on a Japanese faucet outlet?
I've had to use ring clamps over the cut end of a hose in the past. Not very elegant.

Google "goo net" you will find an online list of used car for sale at Japanese dealers. Not completely spot on in terms of price but it will give you an idea.
Agree with not getting JAF the AAA equivalent because the on base insurance will cover most issues.
You can get a Japanese spec car financed. I've had NFCU finance three of them.

I think Niigata Univeristy offers a MIM (Master's in International Management) in English. Of course, that is not a commutable option from anywhere in Kanto.

I got a MBA from Phoenix.

But anyways to answer your question. Temple University has a MBA program in Tokyo. It is expensive. Maybe a couple of others. Some Japanese university will have English MBA but still geared toward the Japanese student.

That's seriously messed up. Good work on bringing it to mgmt attention but it's too bad they didn't treat this as a serious issue. Perhaps you should ICE it; I find things get taken very seriously once an ICE comment is received.

I thought the way the scales work at the deli, the employee enters the product code and then the weight & price are automatically calculated and printed. She doesn't have to manually input the weight or price since the product code & the scale do all the work and create the label. If that's true, that means she had to go out of her way to falsify the label which is much worse than just being lazy or incompetent.

Watch out at the Yokosuka deli!

Today, I went to the deli to purchase some American cheese.  It was slow....  so she cut the cheese and typed in the code for the cheese.  You know, they type in the code, set the deli item on the scale, and print out the ticket.  I'm mindlessly watching and honestly just waiting for her to finish so that I could check out and go home.  She hands me the cheese.... and I'm confused.  It just doesn't look right.  I wasn't sure if she did or didn't weigh it, but it really didn't look like a pound.

When I got to the checkout, I asked the teller to weigh it.  She looked at me like I grew another head, but weighed the cheese.  Sure enough - it was .55 lb - just over 1/2 a pound - but I was charged for a full pound.

Managers got involved, but no one thought it was a big deal.  "She just thinks she knows the weight" or "I'm sorry, I fixed it for you".  Seriously?  There are scales for a reason....

Make sure you watch the deli person actually weigh your items at the deli!!!
