Also, if you check out the FFSC website under "maps and directions" there is a document "modeling in Japan" which provides a list of modeling agencies. You can contact them year-round, but some have a fee which is waived during the modeling fairs. But not all of them come....Good luck!

I get the impression that these modeling agencies are only interested in hiring you if you fit a real WASPY profile - blond or red hair, freckles, is that true? Also, the half-breed Japanese-American look. I'm only saying that based on who they actually hire from what my friends have told me.

The fairs are on the main base. The casting calls are usually in Tokyo though. If you get called to audition, it usually ends up being an all day thing. I have heard of all types being used...young, old, middle aged, asian, not asian... It all depends on who the client is and what they are looking for that go-around.

Yes, and what's even greater is this. If you use your kids in the photo shoots you don't have to worry about absences in the elementary schools around here since they don't enforce the absences like they do in the States. You get to make big bucks off your kids before they're old enough to figure out that you're hosing them out of their money! So much for trust funds. You go girls!

Yes generally the darker the shade the more rejection you will face in Japan. WASPY isnt really the only white they are interested in, russian and europeans do well, all halfus, if they have good oriental features that distiguish their halfness, will make the cut. The real cutie white/japanese will always be picked. Filipino, Indonesian, Korean, African, good luck. There is a certian Kawaii factor that they are looking for, you just have to develop an eye for it. There is a girl in Japan on the National Geo channel with a surfer dude from hawaii touring japan, I think she is from austrialia. That is the look they want. Kinky hair, broad nose, strong asian features, dark, or any of that they dont want. Im sorry to be blunt but this is japan. There are exceptions but this is the norm. It is a form of racism, but not the same racism as say in the U.S. Here it is more conformity type racism, what everybody likes is excepted. Everybody likes a certian look, so that is what is excepted. Awhile back Tyra Banks had a modeling show and they came to Japan. There was a halfu looking white girl and as I suspected, the Japanese guest on the show immediately said that girl would do good in Japan. Thery werent interested in any other nationalities or shades. Just because your halfu, however, doesnt guarentee you sh-t in Japan. Most halfus end up working in entertainment, modeling or some other PR job. I worked for an Italian halfu guy. He had faced allot of discrimination in Japan.

I highly recommend it, my wife and I went to the modeling fair a few years ago, and the agencies call every now and then, it is fun, not only to take photos of your children, make a little money, and see different parts of Japan. Here is a pic of my son's photo shoot.

Awesome example!!! I am going to change this title to Modeling in Japan vice the "Yokosuka Japan Modeling Fair, Fall 2009"

It just makes sense to keep this a running post, because there is a lot of useful information already provided.

I have moved this post into the Photography section as well, under the JAPAN FORUMS.  That way its not specific to just Yokosuka, and can help anyone throughout Japan.

Is the fair only for those stationed at Yokosuka or can anyone stationed in country do it? We are in Iwakuni and arrived from San Diego a few months ago. My son was with an agency in LA, but we are looking for someone to represent him here. Let me know, please!

Some agencies prefer different looks lover others. My kids have worked with Sugar and Spice before, but I've heard and noticed that they seem to specialize in Blonde Hair, blue-eyed children.

My children have both worked a fair amount, and they are Half Mexican and Half Caucasion. We work with one agency consistently, and they give them a chance to audition for many different types of jobs. Sugar and Spice however only calls us when they specifically need someone ethnic, and have even asked my kids to play children from Iraq, Egypt, and Italy.

epearcy-you are more than welcome to solict any of the agencies on your own. The only difference is that they might charge you a registration fee (maybe around ¥1000) to register with them. Here are the names of some agencies that we have worked with, or know of:

K&M promotions (My favorite agency, I also heard they give you the highest cut)  http://www.kmpro.co.jp

    epearcy-
You could probably do it from anywhere in Japan, but I believe most auditions and jobs are in Tokyo. At least all the agencies that come to the Yoko fairs are in Tokyo. You may want to check with your local base MWR or FFSC who may know of local agencies or fairs. I think Tokyo would be too far to make it worthwhile!

The information usually comes out in March. If you check the FFSC page on the CNIC website, it will have a hyperlink for the modeling fair once they start advertising. It will have the registration form and details on what to expect/bring/etc.

Also, I would suggest making copies of the registration form once you fill out everything but your signature. That way you aren't filling it out 15 times. Bring head shots of your kid (enough to give to all of the agencies), but let the agency take a photo of your child as well. That way they also get a better idea of your kid's personality (they bring their own photographer). Sometimes you can't get through to all of them if there are a lot of people there, but don't show them the photo up front though...some of them won't take a photo if you already have one. If they ask you if you have a photo up front, just tell them "no." If they don't ask, let them take the photo and then give them the photo you brought. If you don't get through to all of the agencies, there's a drop box at the entrance/exit where you can drop them off if you have them in a sealed envelope with the agency's name on it. The box is a great alternative in the event that your kid isn't acting quite themselves (ie: screaming their head off), or sick. Good luck!

    hmmm.. 4 years ago.....

I was in the Navy.. Good thing I moved on.. Yes I try to stay on top of everything. In the next few months, I cant wait to see how the website will evolve. I may be able to connect with agencies throughout Japan, and hold our own JapanBases.com event modeling showcase here locally in Yokosuka. I will rent a facility, and have our own place, that you can bring your children, and get them seen by professional modeling agencies.. I have been debating to pick up the phone, but I have a lot going on right now.

Trust me. I have been contacted by over 20 companies a week.. They all want to either advertise or connect with the bases.. I have told them all to please wait... ZUJ for those navy IT guys...

I've had a bunch of students model since I've been in Japan. They said it was fun and they made good money (that their parents promptly took and put in their college account at the bank. Hahaha!)

I even had several students appear in MOVIES! In fact one is coming out April 29th. It's some Japanese movie/comedy.

Awesome, I hope everyone who goes has fun!

Brit....for your age group, I recommend getting professional headshots. Most auditions are held in Tokyo and you'll be competing with contract models from all over the world. They usually have professional portfolios, so it really is imperative that you have at least one, good headshot and full body shot to take with you to the auditions.

Kids can get away with candid shots taken by mom or dad, but to stand out from the rest, professional pictures are still recommended.

There are many photographers on this site. You might want to look into setting up a small photo shoot with one of them when you get here. You could also try working with an amateur photographer that is also trying to build their own portfolio. That way you aren't out of any money and you still get TFP (time for prints).

Check out my son's new commercial that just came out. I must add that this was by far the WORST audition he ever went on. I left very irritated......but to my shock, he won them over.
