OMG is all I can say; I hate spiders with a passion and that bad boy looks HUGE!! So do you use bug spray from on base or off base?? And what's the name so I can stock up on the spray when I get there. Thanks

Spider season is almost here. The big ones come out around this time of year. I don't mind the little ones, but those BIG ones creep me out. I especially hate it when I run into one of their webs in the dark. ~shiver~

What! The spiders get bigger? We live in a townhouse on the main base nestled into a hill. July was particularly bad. I'm not sure I can handle much more of the bugs here. I seriously kill or usher out (of the house) 20-25 a day. Anyone know if/how they compare to the Hawaiian cane spiders? Those things are huge and way too flexible.

Oh, dang! We're moving into a townhouse nestled into a hill too this coming Friday. As it is, the back patio cover has at least 6 webs with their mommas in each! I told my husband that I'm spraying them dead the first moment we walk into the house.

After that, I'm going to make some homemade citrus spray and periodically spray my fences, patio cover, outside walls and right outside the windows, doors, and by the trash cans. Apparently, spiders DO NOT like citrus oils because it breaks down the natural waxes and stuff they need on their hairy little legs. Some eventually die!

Now all I need to find is 100% essential oils (not the synthetic stuff) of either orange, lime or lemon. I need to see if I can find those out in town somewhere. (So, if you know, please let me know...)

I feel better about using the natural repellent that will keep them away in the first place so that I don't even need to see them.

By the way...

Someone mentioned earlier about the Mukade Centipede bites...

Here's a couple pics taken of my friend's leg with a Mukade bite just last week.
The first one is only a day after the bite.
The second one was about 5 days after the bite.
And I might add... they are REALLY painful stings.

After this... it still got worse. Her body is still working at getting rid of the venom. It's now been about 10 days.

What! The spiders get bigger?

Oh yeah!  They get bigger.....especially after feasting on all the bugs throughout the summer.  By fall, they're HUGE - just in time for Halloween!    I got a big backyard w/ lots of trees and shrubbery, so they got lots of places to hide.

I only notice small spiders in the house every now and then.  The ones I see in the house are not so intimidating.....they're pretty tiny.

I also had the pleasure of showering w/ an ugly looking cockroach last week.    I managed to scoot him down the drain, but I have to say, I don't really like sharing my shower w/ uninvited guests.

This year, I've noticed a lot of tiny ants inside and outside the house.  They are super tiny ants.  A few ant traps seemed to do the trick.

Oh JJaMS, the centipedes in our house are huge. I only mention this because you know how big my husband is and even he was impressed/grossed out/almost defeated by one. We will have to talk about the essential oils. I would be willing to put together an internet order if you can't find anything in town. I'll ask one of my neighbors who does everything with oils (even her own diaper rash creams!).

Yoko-girl - good to know they mainly stay outside. Our outside is uninhabitable from the mosquitoes and bugs. So we are safe.

Questions for Current/Former Renters:

For those that saw big spiders, roaches, centipedes in your house: Did you live near a hill? Forested area?

How about outside the house? Same question...

We're signing for a house on Tuesday and it's an older home, 1970's, that's been updated and maintained. It's a few streets from a hilly area and has a yard with trees. We lived here before in a newer home next to a hill and saw a few mukade (red centipedes,) one geji geji (lots of black legs centipede/fluffy,) in the house, several big huntsman/monster/benjo spiders and a few large roaches.

Final Question: Those gals that were going to try peppermint, citrus oil, eucalyptus leaves, etc--how did it work? This house has literally, 16 sliding doors with storm shutters. Also, got a small pet who is very sensitive to chemicals so natural is better.

I appreciate any and all opinions, comments and stories. I am now going to have a few nightmares...

Man, my wife and I think stuff like that is awesome. So far, we honestly haven't seen much in the way of anything other than small jumping spiders down here in Sasebo.

Critters don't bug us as much, but then again, we used to own tarantulas back state-side before my orders out here.
