I have a 2011 Toyota Tundra that I need to get registred but don't have the time.  Are there any people here in Yokosuka that can assist with this?

Are you talking just the registration or are you talking testing, certification, federalization and registration?

I am talking about testing, certification, federalization and registration. It's a new car that has never been to japan with US plates. Any assistance or guidance will be appreciated.

If you go to the Yokosuka VRO office, they have an info sheet titled 'registering an imported vehicle in Japan.' It doesn't have enough particulars, but it does say the key things that you need. I was just looking at this yesterday because I'm considering importing a car.

From what I remember, after the car gets here you'll need to:
-Get your import/customs certificate. If your car comes with HHG shipment you can get this from the HHG office. If you're importing on your own, I suppose the shipper has to provide this. I'm looking at shipping my car on my own so this is still a question mark.

-Get an emissions inspection if the car was manufactured after April 1976. The info sheet said that this will cost about 200,000 yen. I've heard it may cost more. Kanto area has the most stringent emissions standards in Japan (maybe in the world) and the car must pass Nox and PM tests. If the car is new this is a no-brainer- you'll pass, but you've got to do it anyhow.

-Make modifications as needed so that your car will meet the slightly different Japanese standards. Depending on the model. When I did my Dodge Grand Caravan (local delivery from NEX car sales) the turn signals and backup lamps had to be modified.

-Get the inspection done. The info sheet I saw said to get the inspection done by the NEX Autoport. I'd recommend scanning the other posts on JapanBases for alternatives. I'd just take all the money in my wallet and flush it before I EVER go to Autoport again. If you pay someone to get the (free or at least much cheaper) inspection done in Yokohama they will have to check all the modifications, verify all VIN numbers, and even make a new Japanese VIN on the engine and chassis.

-Parking certificate and all the other "normal" headaches for registering any vehicle in Japan.

I hope this helps- I don't really know how precise this info is but if you find out more please share. As I said above, I bought a car from the Navy Exchange in Yokosuka 5 years ago but much of the emissions and mods were done already. I'd like to do this again if I can get a better idea of the cost. Keep us posted!

Thanks I'll update the post once I go through this process. I'll be getting the info from VRO so I can get the ball rolling today.

Getting someone to do it is difficult and it will cost you. I know some people in the past who hired someone to do it. You might want to talk to the manager at the autoport, he probably has some contacts.

If you want to do it, then be ready for one month plus, lots of cash and lots of trips to get temp plates. I've done this three times and it is more painful every single time due to additional layers of red tape. They should just ban imports because they make it so painful.

    1. Get the customs form from HHG, even if you shipped it yourself.
    2. Make an appointment for the emissions testing. 200,000 yen, the car has to be tested overnight. The forms are extremely detailed, get as much information you can about your car from Toyota. It asks for a list of every single emissions control device, type, manufacturer... Transmission, differential ratios...
    3. You will most likely also need the track based noise testing... This is new... ? Cost.
    4. Insurance before #2, 5 day temp tags all throughout the process for over one month
    5. Pay the recycle tax.. Wait for 10 days to get confirmation from the tax office before proceeding.
    6. Get the truck preinspected at the LTO
    7. You will most likely need to modify the rear lights, front signal lights, add side signal lights and the ultimate irritation, a front quarter panel monted blind spot mirror.
    8. Go through the inspection at the LTO. Pay the weight and road tax.
    9. Go back and get more insurance because they will sell you only one month more than is required and you will definately be doing this for more than one month.
    10. Go to the VRO to get it registered on base.

Oh, I forgot the parking space form you have to wait 7 days for the local police station to approve and the base inspection, which you won't pass until all the modifications are done on the car. I failed once because the front tag had to be mounted in the factory location.
I think what really irritates me is the constant trips back to the Yokosuka tag office and the VRO every 5 days.

InJapan, Thanks for the post it was very helpful. I have the form with all the detailed info you are talking about and there are some things like the emissions I have no idea about. I tried googl'ing but it did not help. Do you have any idea how to get some of the detail specs for the vehicle they are asking for. You are right they ask for some real detailed stuff. I'm having trouble with the Emissions Control Devices and Ignition Timing. If I don't have the info for this do you know if I can still get the emissions test done? Oh, and yes I'll have to do a noise test also I think it's just another way to get more money from you. I hope you can help me out. Thanks.

I would email your stateside dealer to have them send you as much info as possible from Toyota USA.
Fill the forms out the best you can... Google and web forums to get more info then just turn it in.
Most likely they have tested a similar truck in the past and have all the info and they will fill the rest in for you.
Just try to stay calm and realize it is going to take a long time.
