    Hi all.

My husband just got (accompanied) orders to Yokosuka and we plan to live off base because we have two small dogs.  Anyway, we consider internet very, very important (we stream, download, play multiplayer online games frequently, skype, etc) since it's going to be our main communication/entertainment source.

My question is, is fiber internet different from regular highspeed cable/dsl?  Could anyone recommend me any good providers and speed/prices, possibly?  I am trying to get our budget ready.

    Thanks in advance!

Fiber is better than cable and DSL and much faster. I love my 100mbps fiber connection. My speed test are normally around 80mbps down and 20mbps up to the nearest server.

I'm sure others will post as I'm not in the Yokosuka area I can not recommend a provider but I do recommend getting Fiber and the fastest possible for your budget.

He is a thread about off base providers.

You aren't going to have any Internet issues. Jcom has cable Internet up to 160mbps. And it's very reasonably priced.

I have Jcom and stream all the time. Thing to note is a lot of places (hulu, amazon, and netflix) won't actually let you stream to Japan so you'll need to get VPN as well.

If you do a search there is more than one thread about VPN services but here's 3 to get you started:

    Hope that helps!

    Hi and welcome to Japan,
We signed up through ICT Station (above the 7-11 outside Womble gate). The actual provider of our fiber optic service is OCN (Open Computer Network) and it is a 200Mbps line for 7,600 yen a month (roughly $95 depending on the current yen rate). We test daily and consistantly get on average 150 to 160Mbps downstream and 50 to 60Mbps upstream. We also use a service called "Unblock-Us" (google it) for $5 a month and are able to get all the usual services (Netflix, Pandora, Vudu etc. streamed to our blu ray and pc's). It's pretty simple to use and they have very clear instructions. OCN is by far (for me) the best provider around. FYI- They do have an upload cap of 30GB a day (only for what gets transmitted outside your home network). Hope this helps and good luck.

Okay, thanks so much to everyone for all of the help. I have an idea now of what I'm going to be paying for all of my utilities, sweet. =)
