I might be moving to iwakuni mid summer. My housing allowance is 50k a year. If I don't use all of it, do I keep it? Does the housing agency keep it? Do I give it back? Is there a way to keep it? Im kinda puzzled on all of this.

Are you a contractor? Civil service? Active duty? They each have their own rules.

No, you don't get to keep the difference.  You only get paid for what you use/need.  If you 'use' more than what your bills require, you must repay the difference.  Bills include rent and utilities.

Utilities do not include cell phone or internet access.

It is pretty harrowing considering the yen changes frequently and until just a month or so ago, the yen rate wasn't tied to anything easily identifiable.  It is now tied to the yen rate as posted by Community Bank.

Does that apply to ACTDU as well? I'm interested in moving off base so I can experience moreo f Japan. I think I get to keep my OHA if I don't use it all.

You do not get to keep OHA, unfortunately. Much stricter rules here regarding OHA than with BAH in the states.

Thanks for the quick reponse. It seems like it's cheaper to reside in the barracks. I can imagine that living out in town is a big hemorrage of money in that case.
