Is there any way I can get more information on apartments off base? I will be moving to Sasebo in the next 30 days and I would like to get a jump on finding a place.

You really should go through the Housing office. You could do everything by yourself, but then if you get screwed you kind of have no recourse.

Well, these apartments are on the housing office board so if you want these, you need to go to housing office.

But also we have houses that you dont need to go through housing office but we never had problems.

If you need more information, please send me a message.

Ultimately, the lease must be handled by the housing office regardless of how you found the home. Hopefully, they should discern any problems if they exist.

There is really no point in looking before you arrive. You can't hold a house or apartment until you get here, you can't visit it before you get here, and you can't move into it until after you're already here.
You won't have any problem finding a house/apartment in Sasebo. There are plenty. We found one in under a week of looking.

I've read a lot of information about Off-Base housing near Yokosuka and I'm assuming it is similar to Sasebo, but I haven't seen as many resources as far as house hunting in Sasebo. As Katherine has said above, I've read in several places that there is no real point in looking before you arrive because a house can't be held, but since we have 2 dogs (which i've also read about the troubles with that), I wanted to know what kind of lifestyle we can expect to have with them. We have a Yorkie & a Chocolate Lab. Can I take my Lab jogging with me on a leash? Or are dogs in public considered rude or disrespectful?

I have read that the average time to find housing off-base is 34 days in Sasebo. I'm assuming that statistic isn't for people with pets. Does anyone know the average time to find housing off-base with our two dogs in Sasebo?

Are there any pictures of homes off-base in Sasebo? Also, perhaps pictures of ones they consider "Pet Friendly"?
In Sasebo, is it more convenient to leave near the main base, or is there a train line that goes to it? Are there better options living close to the train station?
Looking for 2-3 bedroom, with parking enough for at least 1, a yard, and close to base/train station...for June 2013...I know I am WAY ahead of time, but I want to be reassured that we know what to expect in Sasebo specifically.

I also play lots of racquetball and wondered if the Main base-gym or Hairo Village gym has racquetball courts. If so, do people play and are there tournaments? I know of some good players from Japan, but I don't know where they are from. Has anyone heard of racquetball clubs near Sasebo?

You will be able to find a house or apartment that will accept your dogs. I have countless friends with pups! Some with bigger dogs also. The only hard part about having your dogs is that there are very very very very few houses with any kind of yard. You will find many people, American and locals, that walk there dogs around neighborhoods. The only other thing is that it's hard to find places to let your pups run without leashes. I have a friend here that has issues with this, but I believe she goes tries to find beaches and deserted places to let them have some great excerise. You should add me on facebook if you are there. I can show you some great resources and you can see all my photos of my house.

There is no point in looking for a home now. Please don't worry, you will find a home pretty easily. Even more so if you are coming in June before the summer rush of people. We got into a house in under 3 weeks and we had to have a place that would except our two cats. I have only heard of a few people getting into a home after 30 days if they were being extremely picky and wanting a brand new western style home in a Japanese society.

    Look me up! Kristi Groves

PS: Yes, they have racquetball quarts on base

When you look at the Cho viewing board at the Sasebo Housing Office, the housing pamphlet may indicate that pets are not allowed. Ask your housing agent if the owner is willing to negotiate. Most owners will allow a pet if asked, especially if their home has been vacant for a while.

Yes! I agree with that too! The house we live in orginally said no pets, but we asked if we could bring our two cats and they said yes. We just had to pay about an extra $600.

That's great to know! I'll definitely keep an eye out for both lists (pets and no pets). Any recommendations on locations?

P.S. I AM SOOOOOOOOO EXCITED to hear the good news about the racquetball courts!

No, I really don't have any recommendations. It's not like in the states where there are good neighboor hoods and bad ones. I think it's just up to you on what type of area you want to live in. More in the city or more in the country or somewhere in between. We live in the outskirts of the city. Another thing that will deteremine where you live is deciding how far from base you want to live. My friends have an amazing house, but live 20-30 mins from base. Which was terrible when they only had one car and her hubby was on shore duty (aka:always home & also needing the car). Everyone was very helpful to giving her rides at first, but it gets old very fast. Needless to say, they gave up and bought a second car. So even if the house is amazing, being that far from base is a pain. In the states you didn't rely on going to base very much, but here, EVERYTHING goes on, on base. Expect to visit there at least once a day (twich if you drive your hubby) and then an extra trip if you need to run errands. Even our 10-15 minute back and forth 3+ times a day can get a little bit over done sometimes.
