NEW RESTRICTIONS ON MAILING ARTICLES CONTAINING LITHIUM BATTERIES

    1.  Beginning Mon, 7-May-2012 the United States Postal Service has placed new restrictions on mail containing lithium batteries.  Articles containing lithium batteries will only be allowed to be accepted and transported as surface mail.  This will add approximately 30-45 days of transit time for delivery.

    2.  Please keep in mind that adherence to declare detailed description of contents (to include mail containing lithium batteries) is solely the sender’s responsibility and will not be monitored by U.S. Postal Service or Military Postal Service employees.

    3.  If you have any further questions concerning this or other postal related inquiries, please feel free to give us a call at DSN: 252-3767.

That's going to put a pin in the party hog. Does anyone know where that thread that covered off base shipping with Yokosuka addresses for Japan shipments is located?

I'm looking at Black Cat and DHL now I suppose.

This stinks. Like everything else, it reeks of leadership not taking care of the troops.

First of all, why didn't this word come out like 6 months ago? Here we are, one week from the new restriction and it's leaking out by social networking sites. Where are the leaders in this snafu? At least had we known months ago, it might have spurred you to order something quick while you still had a chance. Now, it's too late.

Secondly, they do say that maybe by Jan 2013 it will be resolved with new international regulations. In other words, a work-around exists; it's simply not ready now. So why couldn't the Great Minds back East who are cozy & overpaid put together this work-around a bit sooner so that there would have been no interruption in mailing whatsoever? Answer: Because they are back East, and are not affected by this hardship.

Just one more instance of "leaders" not really giving a damn, and not leading. If it had been something like: "Travel & per diem for Washington DC staff will be interrupted for 8 months while we figure out a new policy" I can guarantee the new policy would have been figured out on the double & nobody would have been inconvenienced.

BTW, I found another lengthy discussion about it here:
    http://www.shipito.com/16-shipping/...-shipments

Naturally, companies that provide mail-forwarding services to FPO/APOs are not liking this; it will really impact their business because they, too, will be able to forward mail to anyone overseas if it contains lithium batteries.

I found the link I was searching for:  http://www.japanbases.com/forums/aft/750.aspx

I received an iPhone from a friend in Germany today that needs some lovin' from SoftBank to feel well again, I sure hope they can fix it really fast or they won't ever get it back.  It's a Japanese iPhone and the German's won't touch it.

It's too bad big government can't just follow corporate America sometimes instead of the usual knee jerk reaction to thermal runaway when it comes to Li-Ion batteries.

Anyway I have a few questions here about Japanese addresses:

(Black Cat,  Sagawa Transport, FedEx, DHL - Mail providers)

Yokosuka mail for on base housing:

    (Name?)

    238-0041

    Yokosuka-shi Honcho1

    Yokosuka Naval Base

    Street/House Number or Tower/House number

(The Japanese version of the main base post office address is)

    (Name?)
    238-0001 Yokosuka-shi
    1 Banchi Tomari-cho
    PSC # Box #
    FPO AP
    Japan

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Iwakuni mail:

    (Name?)
    PSC 561 Box xxx
    MCAS Iwakuni-shi
    Yamaguchi-Ken
    740-0025

    1.  Can someone confirm that the name would go first or does it go on the bottom line?
    2.  Does anyone know a good address for those living on base at Atsugi, Zama and Okinowa?

I don't think they really ever enforce it.

I don't think USPS enforced it either, but a lot of online vendors just didn't make shipping overseas available during the duration of the May regulation.  Good to see it lifted!
