    Hello,

Has anyone recently  got on post housing at Camp Zama? I am just wondering how long it took, since we do not yet have our name on the waiting list I can't see how long the average time is taking.

We are a family of 2 adults(E-4, Soon to be E-5), 2 boys under 3 and  1 girl that will be 1year  when we arrive at Camp Zama. We have no pets, Unless you count the millions of ants that are here in NY lol!
I am wondering what type of housing we would be put in, I want on post housing but if push comes to shove I guess we can go off post lol. I enjoy the post housing here.

Any other information that you think I need to know would be great! (example: what not to bring, what to bring, and so on.)

    Thank you.
    Burton

I have read, not been told by our sponsor, that you have to have on post housing unless you are of a specific rank. Is this true?

Also what do you think we would be aloud into 2br, 3br, 4br and so on. Is it apartments or duplexes (and all the other plexes lol) Do they try to keep people on post or are they case to case sensitive about it?

Oh also, how does laundry work on post? I keep trying to find out but I seem to only find info from the other bases. Does Zama housing have their own washer/dryer or a community shared washer/dryer or do you have to go to a laundry mat?

    Thanks again

Hello, I can help answer some of these questions. Zama has either large apartment complexes or townhouses. I believe the main housing base for camp Zama is another base just 1 train station away called Sagamihara. I actually lived on Atsugi but I have been to a couple of friends houses on Zama and they had washer and dryer machines in their houses.

    Burton family,
Camp Zama is quite small. We have been here about a year and a half. We live on SHA (Sagamihara Housing). Here is some information: Make sure your sponsor takes care of you. When you get here you will take about a 3-3.5 hour drive from Narita Airport to Camp Zama lodging. You can purchase Yen at the airport, but it might be good to get some at a bank before you come out (at least 10,000 Y). If you don't have Yen, they accept credit cards at the airport. Just letting you know so that you can buy drinks, bottled water because of the long bus ride. Your sponsor should meet you there.

Once you arrive to Camp Zama, you will check into lodging. This will be your home for a while...anywhere from 2 weeks-2 months. It is worth the money if you stay in lodging. They are like mini apartments, equiped with everything!

You will go through at least 1-2 weeks worth of newcomer's all day events. I don't remember if our US driver's license had to be valid, but I would just in case. You will take a brief Japanese driving course, then test and then eventually receive a Japanese license.

Housing..there are two towers at Camp Zama, no pets allowed. They are building new homes here on SHA right now and the rumor is these houses should be finished by the end of the year. Other than that, there are a few ancient wooden houses and duplexes. One story houses and some two story fourplexes with one stories on either side. There are also concrete some two story 4plexes all over SHA. The elementary school and a CDC are located at SHA. The middle/high schools and another CDC are at Camp Zama. Housing provides (beds, drawers, couch, love seat, dining table, chairs, washer, dryer, dishwasher, and stove. You can also get dishes, utensils at the self help at Zama. You can definitely bring your furniture, just like when you move from bases in the states. Check Camp Zama online, you should be able to see the houses. Make sure your first shipment you receive, you pack blankets, pillows, tv, dishes, pots, pans, clothes, towels, microwave, uniforms, anything you need immediately.

You're pretty lucky to be arriving when you do, because there are so many renovations and new buildings under construction now.

The biggest thing, stock up on your favorite snacks, meds, canned goods, clothes, shoes, whatever you will miss. Our Commissaries and PX are really tiny! But you can drive an hour away to Yokota AFB or Yokosuka NB, or like 20 minutes to Atsugi NB. You will definitely adjust, Japan is amazing! There is so much to do and see! We love it here! Camp Zama spoils our community, so we have it pretty good out here!

    Thank you Danny and Shalala,

Do you know if these all day events allow kids? Because like I said before we have 3 under 3 lol, I am a stay at home mom so they aren't used to being in daycare either.

How many BRs do the houses have? Some bases in the U.S. only have 3br houses where others have 2br-4br and so on. We are just wondering what kind of house we may be put in. Where we are at now with 2 boys under the age of 10 and our daughter under the age of 10 we could have been placed in a 2br home... but we were lucky and got 3br lol. I know every place is different and that is why I ask

With your 3 kids you will be allowed a 3-4 bedroom. They won't put you in a 2 bedroom. I think the towers on Camp Zama are for E-5s and above. But housing might be putting families where ever they want. Their rules always change. You can also get a 3-4 bedroom (wooden or concrete) home on SHA. These are older houses, but you get to control your AC/heat. In the tower, you don't control the AC/heat.
There are 2 CDCs, one on Camp ZAma and one on SHA. There is library mommy and me time, religious classes and events, and the CDC always has events.

Remember when you arrive you will be placed in lodging, this is where you make money! The longer you stay the more money you make! It's pretty nice! Make sure when you do look at homes and accept one, you take pictures and check everything thoroughly! If you smell mold, then there is probably mold in the home, so check!

Other than that, MWR rocks out here! WE are pretty spoiled and there are so many trips and events that happen on Camp Zama! Good luck! Check out camp zama classifieds on Facebook. You can get more answers there! Good luck and enjoy where ever you are now, because Japan is so different! Fun but different.
