Do the local grocers in Yokosuka carry meats that have not been injected with any kind of additives or hormones?

    I found this online:

That's a bit of a complicated question. Domestically produced meat, in general, does not use a lot of hormones and so on. However, a lot of meat sold in Japan is imported, especially from the US, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina etc. There are frequent trade problems with the US about importing meat that has been fed growth hormones and so on (the US has similar trade issues with the EU). So you should read labels and see about country of origin if you are concerned (especially, I'm sorry to say, meat of U.S. origin). You could also look into farm coops (農協), who generally tout that their meat is growth hormone-free etc. You do pay more for 'happy' meat, as you do in most places.

I know where I am at we have a "Kobe" restaurant and allegedly the cows are treated well, massaged etc. (before they kill them and slice them up) anyway those steaks are around 150.00 and up.

hey thanks for that info. I will have some trouble reading the meat in Japanese markets since I don't speak Japanese. Trying to learn but still...I have been following the controversy surrounding the US's meat export with several countries that are considering cutting ties.

The USDA has confirmed that a case of mad cow disease was found in a California dairy cow. It is the fourth case of mad cow, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), found in U.S. cattle since the first in December 2003. Los Angeles-based Baker Commodities confirmed that the cow was discovered in a Hanford, Calif. transfer station after workers selected the cow for random samplingThe company does not yet know which farm the cow came from.
