Question: I called Navy Lodge to see if there was availability around the date that we should arrive in Yokosuka, and they asked for a check out date.

If we don't know how long we will have to stay in the hotel - what is the approximate time frame that we should give them?

    Thanks

Was it you that have pets? I remember from another post...? If so, what are you planning to do with your dog while in the lodge?

Tell them one month, then about a week before that date, if you still don't have a house, you can extend. That is what I did for three months

Yes I do have pets - 2 dogs ! I am planning on calling the base kennel to get them booked - or is there any other options? I know they can't stay in the hotel with us.

Jennybean - I called and booked it for a month

Thanks for the responses! Knocking things off my to do list slowly

I have read about the kennel a lot. Bad things. Of course I can't judge for myself but from the research I've done, I've decided not to put my 4.5 lb dog and cat in the kennel. I asked you wondering if maybe you had found any other options. I have a friend there who may or may not be willing to let us stay with her while we wait for housing. I was also going to try to persuade the Navy to put us up in a pet friendly hotel off base, assuming there are pet friendly places near the base. I just cant bare to put my dog in the kennel after all the bad things I've heard.

If you find other options please pass them on!! I have not checked around into options for the dogs yet other then the kennel on base.

prdurio1, you can also request a pet sitter on this website, lots of people ask current residents to see if they can watch their pets until they can find a place to live. I have not heard of pet-friendly hotels before but I am not sure if they dont exist at all. If you dont mind not seeing your pet everyday but know that is being taken care of, you can expend your request into the other two housing areas away from Yokosuka such as Ikego or Negishi. We have babysit before for a couple for about a month and we enjoyed the experience of helping, so I am sure you will find somebody that can watch your pet.

Another option is to contact the PAWS shelter on base and request a "foster home" for your animals while you are in the Lodge. I volunteered there and requests like yours are e-mailed to all the volunteers and usually someone is found.

When I made my reservation, I think I made it for three months. I figure the more time I had reserved the better.

Thanks for the great tips!! I will check into those options for our dogs. I would love it if the dogs can be somewhere close to the hotel so that we can see them often. My kids are very attached to the dogs and think that it is best if they could see them regulary.

My family and I will arrive in Yokosuka on May 17th. I have tried to make reservations through the Navy Lodge and the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites to no avail. Is it common to arrive and then get a room in either location? I currently have reservations at the Hotel New Yokosuka, but I am not interested in paying $400/night. I understand that I will be reimbursed for my expenses, I just don't want to come out of pocket for so much initially. Any insight would be great appreciated.

Did you call them or try the online reservation system?

I have tried both online and calling them. Both show zero availability.

When I got here, I stayed one night in the New yokosuka. I called the lodge the day after I arrived and they got me in that day. I ended up staying three months there...renewing my registration one month at a time

For whatever it's worth, once we were able to get a kennel reservation (our sponsor had to go there in person as the phones were disconnected during a renovation), our experience there was totally fine. It's a 10-minute walk from the Lodge, which is nice since you won't have your license at first, and we were able to visit our dog every day (except Sundays, when they are closed to visiting, and on the field trip day during AOB/ICR). The lady who runs the kennel also opened up for us since we arrived late on a Sunday and was very accomodating. Also, it's right next to a dog park (across from the middle school) and the vet's office, which is convenient for the quarantine process. I know others have had issues there but our dog (35 lb mixed-breed) was totally fine and I wouldn't hesitate to send her back there over a weekend.

cubsfan81 - it was great hearing some positive with the base kennel !! Both of my dogs will more then likely go to the base kennel, I have not called and booked them yet but I need to!!!
Is it best to have our sponsor go to the base kennel and make the reservation?

prudrio1 - No problem! I mean, it's not the world's ritziest kennel but being able to see her every day we were at the lodge was so nice (and really motivated us to find our housing quickly The lady who runs the kennel doesn't speak the best English so if your sponsor is willing to drop by there, that would make things easier, but if you can get her on the phone I don't think you'd have too much trouble. Message me if you have any other kennel/dog questions (we just got here last month so it's still fresh).

After not being able to get a reservation online or via the 1 800 number, I called the front desk directly and got a reservation for 30 days. After talking to several people, I think that may the best way of going about it. I called during the evening so they were not swamped with customers and they were super courteous.

As hgracianojr, calculate the time zones and do NOT call during front desk rush hour. Like, 9-10 AM when everyone is checking out, or 1800 when everyone is checking in. If you catch them at those times, they'll just say "Sorry, no room" to get you off the phone. The front desk is staffed 24/7 so catch them at midnight when they're totally bored & they'll spend time trying to find you a room. A lot of it comes down to how hard they're willing to try on your behalf, so being nice goes a long way.
