We have been looking into Japanese preschools for our 3 year old and we are having a hard time deciding on where to go. We have looked at Seika and Mikasa. We really like Mikasa since it is right outside the gate. We were wondering if anyone could share their experience with us in terms of communicating with the school (since there is not an English speaking person on staff).  Also, just overall happiness with your decision. Thanks!!

I don't know much about Mikasa, but I know that everyone loves Seika. I believe that there is an English speaker on staff and the choo-choo bus for on base pickup. Have never had anyone regret sending their child to a yochien. My only caveat is that their calendar year is different from the DODEA schools so if you have older children that might be a problem.

I had my son in Mikasa for 2 years, and he loved it. Mind you, he is half japanese and speaks the language. If your child doesnt speak, it could be difficult and frustrating. I knew a few american kids that couldnt adjust, and most were pulled out. Also, I hear Seika is way overpriced and the teachers there arent the best quality. Anyway, good luck.

I do not have personal experience with Mikasa, but I know a few friends who send their child there. They have never expressed anything but happiness with their children going there. We chose Seika because it was a better fit for our family. Even with the English speaking staff member, there are communication issues. Our daughter was 3 when she began. Everything is in Japanese. She has adjusted and is speaking the language at school and in town. It might help that she has English speaking friends. Overall, we are very happy with out decision.

If you don't get any responses to your post, you might want to ask your questions on the CFAY Wives facebook group. The members might be able to point you to other experiences with Mikasa.
