Insurance premiums off base will be more expensive, but you can choose amount of coverage. Probably run somewhere around the neighborhood of $1k yearly.

I believe USAA offers overseas insurance. I'll check to see if they do.

You can choose your coverage amount at AIU, too. You just have to ask.

AIU has an office on base. It is in the same building as VRO so it is super convenient. They gave us the option of adjusting our coverage, but there was a minimum that was mandatory to maintain.

I will not use AIU ever again.

I had a motorcycle with "full coverage" from AIU get hit in my legal parking space by an intoxicated driver who was caught with out insurance and they told me that since I wasn't operating the vehicle at the time it got hit they wouldn't cover it...

I fixed my motorcycle myself and fought the insurance company for two more years to get paid back.

I'd go with ACE or another vendor...AIU in Japan aka AIG in the USA also took huge taxpayer bail out funds and paid huge corporate bonuses and bought a UK soccer team with the $$...they won't get any more out of me!
