So, I love my Keurig coffee maker, actually purchased it while in Japan after my old drip one died after 5 years of use.

But as we are getting ready to PCS, I begin to explore how to prepare the machine for pack out only to find that well, it is kind of difficult.

I read the instruction booklet, checked the Keurig website, and even sent them a note to confirm. The standard response is:

'Once a home unit is primed the water cannot be emptied from the unit. They can be moved with water in them. It is important to be sure the unit stays upright and in a frost free environment.'

I wrote back to them and let them know that I will have absolutely no control on whether the unit will be kept upright during transport and their response was:

'Once a home unit is primed the water cannot be emptied from the unit. They can be moved with water in them. It is important to be sure the unit stays upright and in a frost free environment.'

Is there anyone out there that has moved with their Keurig without incident? Any thoughts?

We had delays on our PCS to Japan due to the medical board.  So ours was boxed away and we didn't see it for almost 6 months.  When we finally got it unpacked the unit didn't work right away.  You could definitely hear it processing the hot water but nothing would come out.  I decided that since we could report it damaged, I would just continue to try to pump water through it.

After about 3-4 loads of water, it finally started to pour out.  There were traces of water scale, but after about 5 more cycles, the water eventually cleared up.  My guess is that the machine was kept upright properly, I don't see any reason why the crates containing our packed boxes would be otherwise.  The problem here was that the water had eventually dried up in the unit.  I just had to re-prime it and run a few cycles to clean out the dried water scales.

If the unit does get damaged beyond repair, you can claim it and get reimbursed.

    Hope that helps.

We shipped ours with our PCS in April and didn't receive it until 5 months later (delays in shipping because of the earthquake we were told). It worked fine, without incident for a couple months...and then all of a sudden it wouldn't suck up any water. Descale, descale...nothing. So we called Keurig, and they replaced it for free- even though it was a month out of it's warranty (barely a year old machine). I don't know if the move did damages to it or if it was something else...

Our Keurig never worked the same after our move here but was flawless prior to our PCS. We sent it express and had it the day after it arrived in Japan. It now takes way longer to heat up and typically doesn't pour out the proper amount of water, sometimes no water at all. It is going on four years old though and we did have very hard water with mineral deposits at our last house so that could be a contributing factor even though we have done the water scale removal steps. I have been told that the company is great and will send you out a new unit if you have issues, I just keep forgetting to call and ask during their US business hours!

Thanks for the responses! I appreciate it!

Frank - Being that it will be sent in the 'unaccompanied baggage' shipment that may not fill a whole crate, I am concerned as to how it will be shipped. But maybe I should be less pessimistic.

Guess I can just claim it if it doesn't work properly....

I was also concerned about leakage of water out of it to to other items. Not the outer reservoir that your refill daily, obviously I will make sure that is dry, but the inner chamber. Since no one has mentioned that happening that it is good!

It is only a year and a half old, so I hope to get much more use out of it! Oh well, it is only a coffee machine.

Before I packed ours out, I turned mine upside down, and tried to pour most of the water out as I could. They wrapped it and it was stored upright in the container- there was no leakage on the paper that it was wrapped in when we received it- oh and it was sent unaccompanied.

Keurig just came out with a new machine...its all digital and very cool looking- When my current Keurig dies, I am so getting one

Personally, I would run a 2 liter bottle of PURCHASED water through it to ensure to clean up any current deposits prior to packing it up.  Also, I would pack it up myself and place it inside one or two trash bags with some desiccant in the bag (just in case of some spillage).  Then at your new location go out and PURCHASE water again just in case your new location has bad pipes/water (bad or degraded) and use the bottled water until it appears to work fine again.  The bottled waters are filtered, re-filtered and then filtered again so it will be a nice clean water inside while shipped and it is the safest to use anyway.

    Just my two yen worth...

**Just in case you didn't already know, you can purchase desiccant in almost any DIY store in Japan.  I know Homes and Tokyu Hands has it.

    mnjrichardson2 & Wilson -

    Great suggestions, thanks!

Surprisingly I still have the original box, so I think with it, and the added measures, it should be fine. I will try and descale, and as suggested run bottled water through it too as it couldn't hurt!

mnjrichardson2 - the new one also gives me something to look forward to if mine does end up broken!
