Put down your favorite places to shop, grocery stores, shopping centers, little small stores, etc...

Please if you can, list the following, so everyone has an idea where to find it, and what the place has to offer:

    1) Name, Location
    2) What this place has to offer
    3) Why you like it

1 AVE (pronounced "a-vee" not "ah-vay" or "ave" as in wave):
Heisie-cho, Otsu (next to PC Depot), Iwato/Sahara near exit 9), Takeyama on 26 between Kinugasa and Hayashi.

2 Great grocery store with fresh fruit veggies of better than Commissary quality and price, adult beverages, Japanese/Chinese/Thai cooking materials, kitchen ware, some hardware supplies, bathroom and household cleaners, pet supplies, women's requirements, fresh fish, baked goods. Check it out.

3 Convenient, great quality and service, has most everything I need for day-to-day including lots of US products. One of the few places I can buy in small quantity for my small household.

This isn't really in Yokosuka, but if you go to Costco frequently, this would be well worth the extra couple blocks.

A few blocks West of costco is a tall building that says Viale on it. It's kind of like a Shopper's Plaza set up where a department store (Jusco) takes up half of the building, and the other half is small stores. One of the stores is called Nishimatsuya (There is a Rabbit on the sign). It is a wonderful Children's clothing store, and the prices are very cheap. It's also a great place to buy Maternity clothes, baby supplies, and of course funny "Engrish" shirts.

In this building you'll also find a very big 100 yen store, pet shop, Uniqlo, and other clothing stores (some of which carry American sizes). The bottom of Jusco is a grocery store. Parking is validated with purchase.

I don't do much shopping in Yokosuka. I would probably say Homes like everyone else. Livin (directly across) is good as well. Then of course all the Daiso 100 yen stores...you can find them in numerous locations..across from the Chuo station, across from Daiei, or next to Homes. You can find so many neat things at Daiso, and most of the stuff isn't cheapo crap like dollar stores in the states.
Now if you started a "Favorite Restaurant" thread, I might be here all day...

Hard Off...Book off (if you read Japanese books), but I prefer just browsing through the electronics section..

They just opened a Book Off in Mikasa Plaza, however, I only saw Japanese books, CD's and DVD's there, unlike the one out by the Ave which sells a lot more stuff.

    1) Nitori ニトリ Ikeda-cho 4-chome, Yokosuka-shi, Kanagawa 239-0806 (on the 134 near Kurihama)
    2) Housewares, furniture, home decor, bedding, rugs and much much more
    3) I love this place because it feels like a Japanese version of Target. Great quality, great prices and free parking.

Besides the 100 yen stores and Hard Off, I'd say:

    Tokyu Hands, of course!
One of the closest and easiest ones to get to is in Yokohama. Out of the Yokohama Station leave out the West exit and turn left. To simplify, keep walking until you hit the major shopping area. There will be a Daiei, HMV, etc close by. (Or: http://gmap.jp/shop-1871.html)

It has anything and everything even for your hobbies. Pets, seasonal, bikes, lots of cool kitchen items, crafts, toys, bathroom items, etc etc etc.

You'll walk out the store leaving with stuff you don't need, seriously. My favourite part is probably the kitchen section since they have all the neat utensils, liquors and even ingredients for brewing. The seasonal section is always the bomb, too.

    1. Bayside Marina retail outlets, Kanazawa Hakkei (about 10 min drive from Hakkei-Jima Sea Paradise amusement park).

    2. Major American casual and sports clothing brand names (with American sizes), restaurants and coffee shops on the wooden deck promenade by the Marina, live music shows (normally during summer). Good parking, quick and easy access from the Expressway.

    3. Good shopping (but keep an eye on the price tag), good food and an overall enjoyable place only 30 minutes away from Yokosuka.

    2. Red Lobster, CoCo curry, Bamiyan, The Italian Resturant inside Living
    3. All the stores and Restaurants are very reasonable.

Oh, yeah. For the best in gardening supplies, hardware, tools, etc. Keio D2 in Kurihama. And it's the only place around where I can find reasonably priced mango juice in large bottles.

BTW, it's sorta pronounced "kay-oh dates". "D" is pronounced "deh" (not "day") and "2" is pronounced "tsu".

    1. Keikyu kawasaki out the JR station is a great place to shop. Get out at the JR stop and walk underground towards the big central station. then walk back above ground. there are at least 7 major malls in the area with all the stores everyone has already mentioned. California pizza Kitchern is there too. Be sure and leave alll day for this one.
    2. I also love tokyu hands.
    3. machida. get out at the train station and visit the 5 floor hundred yen store. walk a block for a pedestrian only shopping street I have never yet found the end of. go on the first day of the month and there is a shrine sale also.
    4. I like D2 also.
    5. thanks for the tip on bayside marina in kanazawa hakkei. I will try it.

No, unless you really like walking! It's a couple of miles south of the base on 16. Turn left stay to the left at the fork and you'll come to Livin' and Home first then Ave just a bit further.

*Homes- it's a little pricey but they have just about everything you need there except for groceries
*Livin- Japanese version of Wal Mart, really convenient!
*Nitori- I love Nitori! It's pretty reasonably priced. Has everything you need for house stuff: bed stuff, rugs, furniture, computer desks, bathroom, some outdoor patio things, bookshelves etc.
*Donkey-Ho-Du- I don't know the exact name but this is what my Japanese friend told me it's called. It has a bunch of stuff that you would find in a 100yen store but it also has purses, clothes, some food, alcohol, some technology, and it's like a dollar store but not the dirt cheap prices! But it's still pretty cheap.
*Lalaport Mall- It's good for shopping for clothes! They have a bunch of american stores like Armani, H&M, Clarks, and a bunch more shopping!
*Yokohama Landmark Tower- Has a bunch of fun shopping and restaurants! At the top you have a panoramic view of yokohama from the 69th floor! They have a Hard Rock Cafe! I love going there because it reminds me of home and has some really good/missed American food!
If you would like to know where some of these places are let me know!

It's pretty easy to get to actually. (I used the new Yokosuka hotel as a start point since it's on the map and easy to see).

If you want to get on google maps and do the street view (I do this sometimes to help with land marks), just Highlight the address on their map page and plug it into google.

Nitori is a wonderful place to shop for your house. that is all that is there! uh, lala port mall is an amazing mall, but it is in Yokohama...But it is super easy to get to!! about an 40 minute drive. Not bad at all!! The Hard off is the recycle store, and it is awesome!! They have clothes and Louis Vuitton purses, gucci, burberry!! it is all real, they check before selling. Also, if you have things to sell yourself you can take them there and they will pay you for it. It is much, but its out of your hair!! LIVIN is a place I'm sure you have heard of. It is owned by walmart. In the bottom is only food and walmart type things, but if you go up levels it actually turns into a mall! It has some really cool stores in it as well! If you are willing to venture out and drive about 45 minutes to downtown Yokohama, where the Land mark tower is...That mall is the best I have been to!! It is five stories. It has H&M, Gap, Coach, etc AMERICAN STORES Also the Landmark tower has the Guinness world book of records elevator in it. It goes from the 1st to the 69th floor in 33 seconds. It is a really fun time. Also, there is a mini theme park right next to it for little ones or just you and a friend. It is a lot of fun!

Jessica...I am the girl who took your vehicle to LTO. If you would like to see some of these places, I could show them to you! They are all really easy to get to!

If you do not know your way around this is going to be really hard to find, because it is back off the road. IT is really easy to get to, but you can not see the store from the road. Other building are hiding it! Also, it is not in english...I just spelled the english version of the sound in Japanese. AHAHA IT is past livin and holmes, about a mile or two. It is on the left hand side of the road. you will SEE a big building that says MARINE on it. IT is right next to that building. There will be a KFC on the street over. You will see. Thats the best I can do with directions. My Japanese friend took me there.

My favorite place in Yokosuka is Kawashima - it is a craft/art/gift shop near Yokosuka Chuo. The sign is in Japanese, and is purple with white kana, but they always have fun stuff in the window. They have all kinds of art and crafts supplies.

I live in Yokohama, so the shopping is more fabulous up here ;-)

The easiest way to get to Nitori would be turn left out of main gate. Then when you get to the road that city hall is on turn right at that light it should be the next light after womble gate. Then you keep going straight down that road until you see the kfc and castle looking building on the left and at that light you will make a right at the big intersection. Then if you just keep going straight down that road it will be on the left hand side. It's pretty easy to find!

    Jessica,

The address of Nitori is correct, but Google Maps seems to accept Japanese address only in Japanese spelling.
You can copy and paste the string below to let Google Maps search Nitori,

    神奈川県横須賀市池田町4-5-16

    Or, search by latitude, longitude

    35.243148148083016, 139.69152688980103

ok i plugged this into my gps and it says it cant find it. i should have asked a long time ago but what is all of this referring to? the whole address? sometimes i hear people refer to a # and chome. also, i only found the site but nothing on google when i type this as follows, am i missing something here?

    5-ban 16-go, Ikeda-cho 4-chome,
    Yokosuka-shi, Kanagawa 239-0806

Google tends not to like it when you try and Americanize Japanese addresses.

If you plug the Japanese version of the address (神奈川県横須賀市池田町4-5-16)  in to google

You get what I showed you before.

If you go to diddlefinger.com  (awesome site, lets you look up Japanaese addresses in English) and plug this address in:

    Yokosuka-shi, Ikeda-cho, 4-5-16

You get the exact same location on the map, so you might be able to use that on your GPS.

That's Don Quijote. They have them in Hawaii also (probably because of all the Japanese tourists).

We just arrived in Japan a few days ago. All these places mentioned sound great! We do not have a car to drive yet so.. what would be the best way for me to travel to these places. I am not at all familiar with the area. We are on the Yokosuka base. I am assuming from the post that they are all too far to walk to? Any suggestions?? Any great places to go within a reasonable walking distance from the Main Gate or Womble Gate??

    Thanks everyone!!

Does anyone know of a Best Buy type store around here or Radio Shack? We are looking for an electronic store that has everything in a sense, like we need to buy a new powercord for our Playstation 3 and have been to a few game stores in Mikasa Shopping Plaza, Daei Mall, Livin, and such but have been unsuccessful and thought if we could find a bigger electronic based store we'd have better luck. Any suggestions?

I'd recommend Yodobashi.  Their stores sell just about everything that can be plugged in.  Originally a camera store, you can now find just about anything electronic.

There is a good one outside the Yokohama station right next door to TGIF's.  Also a big one in Akihabara in Tokyo.  About seven floors of electronic goodness with restaurants on the top floor.  Similar to Best Buy, only more extensive.

Today I am in Kimberly's shoes, just arrived this week, no car and need some things the base exchange does not have.
Does anyone know where I can get
    1. beach towels for swimming
    2. a lunch box for my 7 yo son
    3. pj's for my 3T daughter?
It has to be close enough to walk and not too far (3 yo is in the whiny stage).
    Thanks in advance!

    Lisa,

Since your on Yokosuka base, you can try getting:

    1) At the Home Store. Its directly across from the main entrance of the Yokosuka NEX.

    2) Lunch Box, you may also try this Yokosuka Home Store, but I havent seen any sold in there.
Above the Home store, there is an elevator in front of the bathrooms of the outside Yokosuka NEX. Take the elevator or the stairs off to the side of the building. It will lead you to the 3rd floor where they have a great kids store. This is where you will find #3.

    3) PJ's for my 3T daughter?
As I mentioned at the end of my comment on #2, I recommend going to the 3rd floor which has a kids store, directly in front of the Yokosuka NEX. You will find plenty of options there, any you may be able to find the lunch box.

Thanks Adam, we will try the Home Store, but the kids store has completely run out of pj's! Plus I thought it might be cool to get her something off base anyway. And the kids store has no lunch boxes or backpacks either!

Hi Lisa I just wanted to answer some of your questions and I relate to the no pajama thing either!  FIrst off they just had a TON of lunch boxes and backpacks arrive at the regular Nex. They also have them (lunch boxes) at the home store across and up the steps (below kids Nex). If you want some pjs try the mall at the maingate. There is a department store second floor that has them and make sure you know your kids measurements before hand since they are listed by Cm. They also sell backpacks and lunch boxes there but more expensive. Let me know if you have any questions and I know you said walking distance but there is an AVE and Livin store along the seawall you could take a taxi to that wouldnt cost much at all. Have you been there?
