I have a 10 year that has been nagging me going on 2 years since we moved here for a Pear, not a canned pear but an actual pear, she loves pears, have been looking at the commissary, and well basically if your not an orange lover, or apples your out of luck most of the time. I go frequently to the grocery store in Daie as well as livin, and havent found any. I found them once the first summer but they were in that blue street open indoor area with all those shops and they were about 400yen each, ouch!

Also beets?? where are beets? i have some juice recipes that call for beets and just took for granted I would find them, but sadly haven't. And kale??

I would really like to incorparate more veggies and I am just not finding the stuff, would love some alfalfa sprouts but i think those might be on the no import rule as well. and radishes, i miss radishes.

Anyone know of any veggies that are similiar to any of those that are japanese? pictures would help as I usually just blindly purchase out in town (sadly some stuff has gone straight to the trash after tasting)

I am open to trying new foods, and an eager to hear of any good green veggies (tired of brocoli and spinach)

Have you tried seiyu? It's got a big red sign which is the other side of the blue street. They got wider variety of fruits and veggies. You should also try saikaya. It's on the lower ground floor the big mall like with a blue sign when you go straight as you exit Womble Gate. Sorry I can't provide you with pictures. But they got plenty of radishes here. They are japanese people favorite they even eat them raw but they come in big sizes. You should be able to find them in those stores. Seiyu has very cheap price. Saikaya is not so much but they got really good selection, fresh especially seafoods if your into that as well.

I prefer my radishes raw lol. Are you talking about blue street mall? I love seafood, but I can't tell what any of the fish are other then the salmon lol. And my family doesn't like salmon, they prefer talipia and mahi, but I cant tell what is what

I have seen the big giant radishes, but I am wondering do they taste the same as the ones from the states? you know the little red ones? I would snack on those all the time, just wash, chop off the top and put in a bowl of water and they are a great healthy snack.

I haven't seen any beets around here. And yes they taste the same. They also have the round white radishes which is softer. I use the radishes here and they pretty much taste the same. They got pears too. Yes the blue street mall is saikaya but you should also try seiyu. Not a lot of American go there. It's like an unexplored or a not yet found good place to shop in blue street. It's right in front of the beef bowl stand. They have a lot of other seafoods other than fish in the blue street mall. Like big crab legs and shrimp and squids. So as in seiyu. I always shop there. And they got this good Bento meals and snacks.

Yah. You wont go that far. Its like 2 corners away from the blue street mall. Its got big red sign on all the corners of the building that says seiyu. Its on the lower ground floor. Just like in the blue street mall. If you haven't tried both of their supermarkets you gotta see them both. Just so you have other options. They aren't as big but worth the try. The mores mall in the station also has a supermarket on the LGF as well.

Are you talking about Japanese pears?  I don't think they are in season anymore, so you may not be able to find them right now.  A lot of fruit here are seasonal, so you won't be able to buy them if they're out of season unless they import them from s/where else (like Okinawa or s/where else).

The Japanese pear is the bottom left.  It is very crunchy and juicy compared to your typical American pear.  They can be quite expensive, but when they are in season, you can find them for about 100Y each.

thanks Yoko, her favorite is the Bosc type, but now that I know what the japaense one's look like I will keep an eye out for them, hopefully they are in season soon, she hates strawberrys, allergic to oranges, and she doesn't like the japanese apples, misses her Granny Smith apples. She is terribly skinny, at 10 she is 5ft 2 and 93lbs and wears a 00 she told me she hates seeing her bones :o( and i have been buying her junk food to help her keep some weight on but would rather have her eat some healthier snacks then fruit gummys and fruit covered in corn syrup.

By the way, I was the same as your daughter at her age....no matter what I ate, I couldn't gain weight.  The only way I could bulk up was to lift weights (although, 10 is too young for her to start weight training).  As she gets older, she'll likely be able to put on more weight.  In the meantime, just tell her that she's beautiful no matter what size she is.

Just a suggestion on the fish...try using a Japanese/English translator...or maybe dictionary...if you don't have one google a translator online and write it down in Japanese and show it to a fish monger...maybe that will work...or if you have a Japanese friend, have them write it in Japanese for you.
