    Hello!

My family of four (plus one small Yorkie--2 years old) recently learned that we may have an opportunity to move back to Iwakuni from Germany this August (husband is DoDDS--we lived there from 2003-2009). We didn't get our dog until we moved to Germany, so I've been reading on this site and others about pet quarantine and housing issues in Japan. I still have a few questions, though:

    1. If we were able to fly into Iwakuni on the Patriot Express (we would be initiating travel commercially in DFW, TX, our HOR), and our dog still had a couple of weeks left of quarantine, could he potentially be quarantined in TLF on base, or is that not possible or too iffy? How many TLF units are even available for pet-owners? We would be moving into off-base housing.

    2. If, for example, we flew commercial into Narita and then on to Hiroshima, would our dog be subject to quarantine at Narita? I think the answer is yes, from what I have read. Is it easier to bring pets directly onto bases in Japan rather than into commercial terminals?

    3. Would it just be easier if my husband and kids went on a couple of weeks ahead of me, and I finished quarantine in the States with the dog and then flew with him (in-cabin) on a carrier such as Delta, or on the Patriot Express (though I'm not the sponsor and might not be able to get on...)?

Our dog has flown with us in-cabin between Germany and Texas the past two summers. He has a pet passport, ISO microchip, etc., but he hasn't had the FAVN test yet. He is very much a part of his "pack," and the stress of kenneling would be too much for him, so I'm trying to figure out the most favorable potential scenario.

    Thanks in advance!
    Diane

I don't know about pet lodging in Iwakuni but I do know that you can have your pet finish out quarantine at the base. They don't need to be quarantined at Narita. As you don't want to kennel your dog due to stress, I would suggest either trying to find a foster home for it for the remaining time period- there a few threads on here about organizations that help you find foster homes OR remaining behind until the quarantine period is up.

I would highly recommend you get the FAVN testing done NOW! The sooner you get it started the better.
Is he DOD or active military?

    Thank you for your reply!

He's DOD. The possibility of a move this year is very uncertain right now, but I think we will go ahead and get the FAVN test done very soon just in case.

I'm glad to know that the quarantine wouldn't have to happen at Narita.

Thanks again, and please let me know if you have any more thoughts!

I believe the kennel here is called the Barking Lot, spaces are very limited so if you are unable to find a foster for the remainder of the quarantine I would try to make arrangements asap to get a reservation with the kennel. Good luck!

Give me a call and we can discuss. You definitely have to have all paper work correct and prior notification within ten days of arrival. Of course all necessary shots and microchip requirements. Please feel free to personal message me and I will send you my phone number. Good luck and best wishes.

I also am arriving to Japan from Germany in March. I recommend that you get the FAVN testing done as soon as possible. We had this done at a German vet and it was sent to Giessen which is an approved test location and turn around time was 2 weeks. It's good for up to 2 years. Cost was about 65 Euros. If you want to fly direct from Germany instead of traveling through CONUS, you should request authorization to fly non US Flag carrier when you request orders. Travel time through CONUS to Japan is about 40 hours which would require a stopover and additional costs. We are flying direct from Frankfurt to Narita. (12 hours) Good information regarding import procedures is fould at the following website:
http://www.maff.go.jp/aqs/english/a...other.html Since you would have SOFA status your dog may be quarantined on the installation. You need to address this on the advance notification and provide copy of your orders.

Thanks a bunch for all the helpful replies. Chris, I may PM you if I need more specific info--thank you.

We would definitely be flying to Japan from the States, not Germany.

We did have the FAVN test done last week. While there, the vet noticed in our pet passport that there had been a gap of three months between the effective immunity period of our dog's first rabies vax and his second one. Apparently that is not good! So, he did another rabies vax that day (same day of the FAVN test--our dog was due for the vax in April anyway) and said that "should" be okay to count at the second vax (basically we would use the second vax as the first one for Japanese paperwork purposes. Does anyone know if that is okay? I have read through all of the maff.go info and can't find this specifically addressed. I sent a question to Japanese Animal Quarantine Service two days ago and haven't heard back from them yet.

    Thanks again!
    Diane

The vet here says to wait to do favn test at least 10 days after second Rabbies shot. To make sure the numbers are correct readings.
