This is my first discussion topic. We are moving to Yokota Japan from Canada and I have read that there is some differences regarding electricity and how it will make appliances, TV's, and anything with a timer / clock function work. Specifically, in Canada or the US, we work on 110V / 60Hz power whereas in Japan it can be 100V / 50Hz. Do I need to (1) purchase a step-up transformer for my stuff to work correctly (especially the plasma TV), (2) buy new whenever I get to Japan, or (3) does everything work OK and I don't need to be concerned?
I found small transformers online (about the size of a toaster). Not very expensive ($60-$120) so bringing transformers along to Japan is doable. Anybody have any thoughts on the subject?

    Hi Canuck,
There's an extensive thread on here about this subject. The simple answer is, every appliance will be a case by case evaluation. Many of the modern electronic ( vice electric) items will have enough voltage regulation to function but long term use may cause premature failure. If the item is frequency dependent, the 50hz power in the Tokyo area will have an impact causing slower function.

My flat irons and blow dryer do not get as hot as they did back in the states. ALso the clock on my Keurig runs reallt slow....so slow that it gets to be hours behind so I cant program it. But my rice cooker works fine with the programming. I do have to set the oven for a higher temp than my recipes call for.

Hey Canuck!!!! Prior to coming here we spent the past three years on NATO orders in Victoria, BC and absolutely loved it! I've come across quite a few Canadian civilian and spouses here, it is funny how I can pick out the accents now just from living in the NW. I cannot help much about the electronic questions since we live on base but just wanted to extend a welcome from one "adopted" Canuck to another
