I have a growing collection of various flashlights and was wondering if there are others like me.  I would like to see what flashlights people have purchased and where they have purchased them.  I am especially curious if you bought them here in Japan.

I have yet to find a Japanese retail store with something I like.  Maybe someone can chime in a good place with good lights?

    My current collection:

    - Fenix TK41
    - Fenix LD20
    - Fenix PD32
    - Klarus XT11
    - Jetbeam PC10
    - Jetbeam ST Cycler

I don't even think I would shop here in Japan for flashlights, with the yen rate the way it is. I like flashlights as well and have the following:

    Fenix TK35
Surefire 6p w/ cree xml led upgrade and body drilled for 18650
Pelican M6 LED body drilled for 18650
Several mag-lites, gerber, pelican, etc that are nothing special

I window shop for flashlights all the time. I recently purchased quite a few of the 18650 rechargeable batteries and converted all my flashlights to run on the same battery.

Right now the CREE XML T6 LED is the happening LED on the market. That is what my TK35 uses and a lot of cheaper chinese flashlights (ultrafire, trustfire, etc) are using this LED in flashlights. You can pick up a beast of a flashlight w/ a 18650 battery and charger on EBAY right now for about $30. I even upgraded my surefire to the CREE XML for about $15.

I just ordered a single cr123 flashlight like your pc10, can't wait to get it.

Do you know a good place to get the 18650 batteries in Japan.  I'm specifically in the Yokosuka area.

I'm considering getting a drop-in for my 4D Maglite.  There's a decent one for only $25 on ebay.  I've been window shopping around as well and haven't found anything with the same caliber that I'm used to.  If I can find a good place for batteries, that would be half the battle for me.

That is what my TK35 uses

How do you like the TK35?  I was torn between that and the TK41 when I was still shopping around.  I decided on the TK41 since, in a pinch, especially with the lack of availability of CR123's at the NEX here, I know I can still get my hands on AA batteries.  I may add the TK35 to my collection if Fenix doesn't release anything new.  I hear it feels good in your hand and throws like a beast.  I know my TK41 is the best thrower I've owned so far.

Me and a lot of coworkers use dealextreme.com since they will ship to FPO.  I ordered some 18650's from Amazon a while back and they wouldn't ship them.  The best Li-Ion batteries use panasonic protected cells(my opinion) and many different manufacturers are using them.  To be honest, I haven't even went looking for batteries in Japan, guess I would price them out on Rakutten or amazon.jp before even going to check them out.  Have you been to Akihabara yet?  I'm sure they'll have all the flashlights and batteries you'd ever need there.

My TK35 is a great light, well built and just as bright as advertised.  Haven't compared it to a tk41 though, i'm sure the tk41 does just fine

With the wife always being deployed and having a 2yo boy and 4yo girl, I just haven't had the chance to go to Akihabara. I've been there a few times before I was into flashlights. I know that if there's 1 place that will have it all, it's there. So far, just been casually window shopping as we hit the local stores. When the wife returns, we will hit Akihabara and I will make sure I bring lots and lots of yen...LOL

I have 18650's for my CR123 compatible lights and I use lithiums for my AA lights. I also have a few RCR123's for my PC10. That single RCR123 light can bust out a hefty turbo mode of 550 lumens, and has a low mode of 1 lumen. Very versatile and a tiny light. I just wish the forward-clicky didn't feel so cheap (my only gripe about the PC10).

Hopefully I can hold off buying some stuff before I take my trip to Akihabara. But as everyone has mentioned, the Dollar to Yen rate is painful.

Have you seen the flashlight selection at the fleet rec center exchange?  They have Surefire and Streamlight.

LOL.  Don't get started on this stuff ThaiGuy, I've been warned before hand and have been an official Flashoholic for a couple of years now.  I should have listened to the warnings.  I now have to keep up with the latest and greatest, if not actually buying, at least knowledge-wise.

FYI - I use the Jetbeam ST Cycler for my walks at night.  It has a medium mode that flashes to turbo intermittently (like a beacon) to insure that passing cars notice me, especially useful if my walks include the kids.  Now that's a feature I just recently discovered existed and I had to buy it.  LOL.

Yes, I've browsed that section.  It seems as though Fleet has trouble keeping up with CR123s.  I was able to get a 6pack for roughly $10.  It was the last pack as of 1 week ago.  Out in town, a single CR123 runs between 600 - 800 yen.  I'd much rather buy my primaries from the NEX whenever possible.  I keep a stock of primaries for SHTF situations where I may not have the ability to recharge my 18650s and RCR123s.

I've had a Surefire 6P the past 8 years which has been my constant companion and a great performer. The only downside is the battery cost and availability. I recently got an LED lite which uses common aaa batteries which I like.

I've read a lot of great things about the Surefire 6P.  Its reliability seems to be unrivaled.  How often do you go through batteries?  Has yours been modded with an LED or are you still running an incandescent bulb?

My Surefire is all original. I order batteries from Amazon. Last time, I got a box of 12 for about $30. Batteries last about 3 months for me because I now use it just for moving about the house at night without having to turn on lights. I have had cases when they lasted shorter periods. When they fail, it's a sudden complete failure. Attibutable to the difference between Lithium and Alkaline.. Lately I've been using my Dorcy 60 Lumens more.

There it goes again.  I now have a Fenix TA21 on its way to me.  Ordered it through going gear dot com.  It was their last one.  This light is very rare now, out of production but still a big demand for it.  I got lucky this time.  Been looking for one of these for quite a while.

12 modes of output, up to 7 days of continuous output on 2 CR123 batteries on lowest mode.  Only a max of 225lumens, but the reflector was designed for throw, so on its highest mode, can throw up to 200 meters.  Not too bulky, small enough to carry around.

Hey John, I just checked the website you suggested, dealextreme.com, and it appears they have it.  A bit pricey, but this light is so rare now, they just might keep getting more expensive as supply runs out.  I hope you're able to add one to your collection.

*** Update:  I just noticed it was tagged "out of stock".  I'll continue to keep an eye out for availability.  I'll let you know if I find a dealer with availability.

Do you know if they are forward or reverse clicky with momentary on?  Also, what is the lumen level on the normal brightness?  Runtime on each power level?

The ebay auction doesn't go into these specifics and I am hoping they included some documentation with answers to these questions.  Depending on specs, I may pick up one.

    thanks in advance

Just received my Fenix TA21 today in the mail.  What a great light.  Multi level modes selectable by a rotating ring.  Aside from being able to select between 9 brightness levels, it includes a beacon mode, strobe, SOS and on lowest mode, will run for a week continuous, WOW.  Love this light.  The beam is very tight and throws very long.  Rated for 200meters, will test it tonight when the sun goes down.

I think this will be the last one for me at least for a few months.

    Running tally:

    Fenix LD20
    Fenix PD32
    Fenix TA21
    Fenix TK41
    Jetbeam PC10
    Jetbeam ST Cycler
    Klarus XT11
    4 D Cell Maglite

Talk about redundancy.  Bring on the darkness!

Those would actually be good to stock up on.  In case of a long term power outage, I can give them away to friends and neighbors to help out.  That's like qty 15 for only $10, a really good deal.

I found out about this light about 3 weeks ago when I heard about the arctic laser.  I was thinking the arctic laser would be the perfect bug killer for those arachnophobic people, like me.  The Torch is crazy bright though.

I am in love......I contacted the manufacturer, 30 day delay on orders.  Plus more delays since it ships out of Russia and we are FPO/AP.  Dang, that could be 2-3 months by the time I receive it.

    Still debating on the purchase.

x1 18650 in this puppy puts out 800 lumens.  They offer a host tube that can take x2 18650 for 1300 lumens and will hold up for 3 hours at that brightness, 3 days on low.

As I was going through some of our boxes that we still haven't unpacked, I ran into a battery for a Dell D800 which is now scrapped.  I decided to tear the battery apart and lo-and-behold, I discover that it's made up of x9 18650 rechargeable batteries.  I'm in the process of testing the voltages on each one once I've got them cleaned up.

I will recharge and retest to see the condition of each.  It would be nice if they were all still good.  They would be the equivalent of x2 CR123 batteries that I would not have to purchase anymore for each of my double battery lights.

    Wish me luck!

Unfortunately, the 18650's are a little thicker than cr123's, so they won't fit in most flashlights that are rated for cr123's.  Some manufacturers like fenix make the battery holders large enough for 18650's.  It would be cool if those batteries hold a charge though and you can always bore the barrels on your flashlights if they are too small for the larger diameter batteries.

Fortunately, all my CR123 lights can use the 18650's.....except the PC10, single cr123

About half way through charging the set of 9 18650s I salvaged from an old laptop battery.  They charged up fine so far and a couple of days later, still holding a good charge.  I'm guessing the rest of them will be good too since they are from the same set.  I guess I won't be buying any CR123 batteries for a good while.  I already have good stock on primaries, so I'm g2g.

BX sells these in a pack of 3 for about 2.00 they have batteries in them already and they come in assorted colors.

I just recently scored a Case Lot of these single AA LED flashlights for super cheap (different from what's pictured in the quote).  Made of aluminum and have rear-reverse-clicky.  They were designed to double as a portable electronics battery charger, even came with an iPod/iPhone/iPad adapter and mini USB as well as others.

I now have flashlights I can loan out without any risk to my more expensive ones.  The rechargeable feature is a bonus.

As a former police officer, I like the Mag-Lite RE1019 Rechargeable. Mine is 16 years old (older version) and I've had to replace the batter twice. It is extremely durable and I worked with it nightly. It now stays in the kitchen pluggen in and I've never experienced an over-heating issue with it in charger for so long. I keep a smaller SureFire light in the night stand next to the bed. In my Emergency Kit, I keep spare batteries for the SureFire and another 3 D cell flashlight (empty of batteries) with spare batteries to last a few days.

I just upgraded my 4D Maglite with a Terralux LED upgrade. Not a huge improvement on the beam, but much brighter than the incandescent bulb that comes stock. I also picked up a couple Xeno E03 that uses a single AA, pushing close to 200lumens from 1 battery. I've also got x2 14500 batteries for them which, at the higher voltage, pushes the single battery E03 to 400+ lumens, very impressive.

Most recently, I also added a Nitecore SENS CR (SENS AA for the wife for her deployments ***AA batteries are easier to find and the lowest mode is more useful for adjusted nightvision since the AA version isn't as bright as the CR version***). Single battery light with accelerometer to detect the realtime angle of the light. Point the light down when turning on, low mode is engaged. Same with 45 degrees down, you get medium, and 90 degrees, you get high, over 200 lumens on high. Point it up when turning on, and it will ramp the brightness up and down based on the realtime angle of the light. Very useful as a headlamp. When looking down at a map, the light ramps down to low, when looking back up, it immediately ramps up to max. Very nice little light.

I'll have to reshoot a new pic of my collection. It's getting out of hand. =O)

I recently got an Eagletac D25C Mini. It's become my new EDC. 3 brightness levels (max at 209 lumens out the front) from a single CR123 battery. Other modes are nice and hidden including SOS, Strobe and Beacon. This thing is only slightly longer than the battery, very portable, very tough, nice clip and packs Big Light performance from a tiny light that fits in the palm of your hand. Easy to tail-stand too.

    I just ordered this: http://www.thrunite-store.com/hot-d...uddle.html

It's actually a x5 flashlight bundle (not buddle). It's like getting 5 for the price of 3, so I dove in and ordered a set. They will be backup flashlights that I will store with a new pack of AAA batteries in my emergency kit. At 70lumens max, it's still brighter than most non-LED Maglites. Couldn't pass it up!

We have four Penguin PowerPlus Hand Powered LED Flashlights.  They don't need batteries and are easily charged using a pump-the penguins wing, I imagine.  We bought them after the earthquake and put them in our two sons room just in case the lights go out in the middle of the night.  We ordered two more to keep for emergencies in both our cars.

myeco Travel, POWER plus, Penguin Dynamo FlashlightWe paid $12.50, but the store we bought them at does not have them in stock.  If you do a Google search for "Powerplus Penguin Flashlight" they range from $8 on eBay to $12.95 elsewhere.

Those are cute.  If I see them, I'll be sure to pick up a couple of them for the kids.  It's a great way to entertain the kids with flashlights without going through batteries.

I have a solar rechargeable/hand-crank radio with a USB out recharging port that also has an LED flashlight.  In a situation where there is no power available, my rechargeable batteries can get a full charge via solar or hand-crank by this radio.

Personally, the tint on these types of lights are too far on the cool side for me; I prefer slightly cool to neutral tints on my lights.  Also the beams are not as controlled.  But, if the SHTF, they are great to have around and are a definite must in any emergency kit.  You can't beat that price either!!!  Nice Find Toraenglish!

    Frank,

You are right on with the emergency radio, flashlight, cellphone charging unit.  We sat huddled around the radio in the dark after the earthquake, listening to the news that horrifying night.  My wife was able to charge her cell phone and text my family in Georgia and hers in Niigata to let them know we were ok.  Our two sons would take turns cranking to recharge the battery.

We did have a battery powered lantern, but with no spare batteries, we used it sparingly.  A day after the quake, D batteries were impossible to find on base.  So, I ordered a couple wind-up LED lanterns that also charge cell phones.  The radio is a must, though.  It may be the most important link to getting good information.

Last January, 2012, an article in the Daily Yomiuri cited a 70% chance of a major earthquake near Tokyo within four years.

Wow, you lived it huh?  Must have been terrifying.  I've been checking and rechecking my emergency kits for the past 2 years.  I have battery chargers that charge via AC/USB/DC power sources.  They are able to charge all my batteries including 18650, 16340, 14500, AA, AAA, and CR123.  All rechargeable lithium/nimh.  I make sure they are all topped off every month.  I also have a stockpile of regular alkaline batteries as well.

I've heard about the high probability of a major earthquake near Tokyo, so I've been building up my family's provisions.  We even have 3 months worth of emergency food ("wisefood" 25 year shelf-life and looking into "food insurance") along with water filtration and most camping gear/supplies.

The only thing missing from our kit is a good first aid kit.  Once I have that, we will continue to build up our food reserves.

FLASHLIGHTS - too many to list now.  I can say that in a major earthquake, I will make sure my Fenix TK41 is at the ready.  300meter throw, 800 lumens, and uses AA batteries.  Built in Strobe function and SOS beacon.  Perfect for search & rescue and signaling for help.  When my Thrunite bundle of lights comes in the mail, I will post my complete list of flashlights here.

*** SAIKAYA has an outdoor store on one of their higher level floors with some decent flashlights available.  TOKYU HANDS in Yokohama has both Surefire and Fenix brands.  So glad to have found a couple places to get serious lights.

Since my OP, here is where my collection stands now:

    - Fenix TK41
    - Fenix LD20
    - Fenix PD32
    - Klarus XT11
    - Jetbeam PC10
    - Jetbeam ST Cycler

    Since added the following:

    - Xeno E03 Warm tint
    - Xeno E03 Cool tint
    - Fenix E01
    - x2 Fenix TA21 (my favorite thrower with control ring)
    - Nitecore SENS CR
    - Nitecore P25
    - Armytek Predator
    - Jetbeam RRT0 S2
    - Jetbeam III Pro ST
    - 4D Maglite with a Terralux drop-in LED upgrade
    - x7 Thrunite Ti
    - CR123 Angle Light
    - 14500 Angle Light
    - Streamlight Stylus Reach
    - Pelican 1910
    - Ultrafire UV
    - Inova X1
    - Crelant 7G5CS (won for free on a forum raffle)
    - Crelant 7G3CS (also won on a forum raffle)
    - 4Sevens Quark RGB
    - Eagletac D25C mini
    - Ultrafire Z10 (enroute)

Obvious Flash-a-holic here.  Needless to say, the technology fascinates me and my collection will likely continue to grow.

Just wondering if there are any Candlepowerforums.com users on these forums; as well as CPFmarketplace.com users???

Can you point me in a good direction for a couple of good "flashlight forums"? While I'm not that interested in having as much in terms of volume of flashlights as you, but I know how that can happen... easily...I do want to be better informed, and try to put together the "perfect combo" of lights.

...and I'm also VERY interested in the modding/hacking side of things.

I've been getting all my information from candlepowerforums.com and supplementing options and mod ideas and such from cpfmarketplace.com as listed before.  From there, you can find other forums because the members are very good at pointing people in the right direction if they have questions or just want to learn the business end of flashlights.  The mods are pretty tight there too, so you won't find information spread out all over the place.  Lots of excellent reviews as well.

You can lurk all you want, you don't have to sign up if you're just looking for information.  Hope that helps.

The reason I had to make sure I had at least 1 Armytek Predator. If the SHTF....with its backup circuitry, I know it will be able to take the abuse.
