    Check it out:
    http://www.stripes.com/news/shippin...e-1.168509

United/Continental will be changing their shipping policy for pets.  This will dramatically increase costs for bringing pets here & sending them back.

Will be less expensive to either fly on another airline or send them on Delta cargo. They offer a 50% military discount for overseas pet shipping.

Please also be aware that American Airlines is super strict about shipping certain animals.  They will NOT ship snub-nose dogs or cats, at any time of the year.  My dog is a boxer mix, and they would not let her fly, even though she actually has a longer snout than a full blooded boxer.  I would love to be able to list her as some other type of dog, but not sure what she is mixed with.  We got her from PAWS, so I have no clue.
This whole debacle is very upsetting to me...This means that many people are going to return their animals to the shelter because they cannot afford these outrageous charges.  You adopt/buy animals while in Japan with the intent of giving them a forever home, not a temporary home!
Any ideas on how to avoid these costs, as we are leaving soon but not before March.

What do you mean by that?

Are you saying that you can't ship animals on non US Flag carriers or only on US Flag carriers?

Of course, we all know that Delta would NEVER resort to this, even after they see United raking in big bucks from this newest fee. These altruistic airlines always have our best interests at heart.

Not like those scummy airlines that started adding fuel surcharges, checked bag fees, extra fee for exit row, etc etc etc etc...

New article on stripes says that costs won't go up for those willing to fly Patriot Express.

You're not always given that choice, plus space is limited on board for pets. It only flies once a week.  In the summer PCS rush, some families are gonna get stiffed. They'll have to decide just how much they really want Fido to come to Japan.  Is it worth $3500?  Plus another possible $3500 to send him home later?

no, Im not saying that at all. I'm saying that travel only books tickets on flag carriers..but Im sure you can fly your pet on any carrier.

Flag carrier is a loose term that actually applies to nearly all countries:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_carrier" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_carrier

US Flag carriers obviously applies to those national airline / national carriers associated with the U.S.

The reason you are booked on US Flag carriers when you travel is because of the "Fly America Act"

The Fly America Act refers to the provisions enacted by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_...tates_Code" title="Title 49 of the United States Code">Title 49 of the United States Code, Subtitle VII, Part A, subpart I, Chapter 401, 40118 – Government-Financed Air Transportation.

The Fly America Act is applicable to all travel funded by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federa...ted_States" title="Federal government of the United States">United States federal government funds and requires the use of "U.S. flag" airlines (not to be confused with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_carrier" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_carrier" title="Flag carrier">flag carriers) with a few exceptions. These individuals include U.S. federal government employees, their http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dependant" title="Dependant">dependents, consultants, contractors, grantees, and others.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_America_Act

I'm just guessing here, but if you went to your travel office and booked travel for a pet that was going to be reimbursed by the US Government you may be restricted to a US Flag carrier, however if you are paying out of pocket then you could choose the best method that suits your situation and needs.

And to confuse matters even more:

The Fly America Act does not prohibit travel on carriers associated with nations that have a "bilateral or multilateral agreement" with the United States; however, travelers must complete a declaration that such an agreement exists. Because rapidly expanding http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Skies" title="Open Skies" class="mw-redirect">Open Skies agreements are considered qualifying "bilateral or multilateral agreement[s]", the provisions of the Fly America Act are less restrictive than in the past.

    http://www.state.gov/e/eb/rls/othr/...114805.htm

I'm not really trying to sharp shoot your terminology it was just a little confusing to me.

I will never use United. I have always used Delta, and Delta acutally cares about your pets.
