Momsy and popsie out there in Japan who has infants or just had a baby. How was the prices of baby stuff like cribs, diaper changer table, stroller, glider chair and etc?.. Is it cheaper to buy here in US, or wait till I get there and buy stuff I would be needing for my baby boy?.. I'm just worried that it will cost more, if I wait and buy it there. Though Japan has the cutest stuff ever for sure!

I was looking at used baby items for sale in this site, and found it expensive compared to some used stuff(in good condition) on Craiglist.

Wait till you get here. You can always buy online and there's plenty of choices here.

I actually have to disagree with Akakmg.... I would try and buy the big stuff back in the states. The selection here on base (at least in Yokosuka) is not very big. At the very least, I would get the big stuff back home (ie- nursery furniture, gliders, etc....) and have them put it in your HHG shipment. It will probably be around the same price (especially if you buy it on a base back in the States). Right now, with the yen rate where it's at.... EVERYTHING is more expensive out in town.

Hi Annie, that's what I thought at first, since were PCS'ing in Camp Zama and heard that PX is so small. I think i will take your advise to buy the big stuff in here and put it in shipment. Store off base has a wide variety of cutesy stuff for babies, yet pretty sure it cost MORE.

I agree with Annie....I got pregnant after I moved to Japan. So I didn't really have the option of getting the big stuff from the states. The selection on base was so small (like 1 or 2 cribs to pick from and maybe 1 changing table) and they don't carry gliders all the time. I would definitely get what you can in the states and have it shipped with your stuff over here.

I, too, agree with Annie, but I wanted to chime in some advice for those already here.  The NEX Depot (on Yokosuka) and I'm sure other bases have the same service...will take special orders for anything that you need (large or small).  Also, if it is in the NEX or AAFES catalog you can order it from them on base and have it delivered to the store so you don't have to pay shipping.  I have ordered lots of large (and small) items this way and it is sometimes cheaper, but other times just the same prices.  Never has it been more expensive.

Things I have ordered in the past:  Baby Crib, baby playpin, Weber Smoker, Bosch full size American Range/Oven, full size freezer.

So if you really need/want something then approach your special order desk on your base.  Here on Yokosuka they are awesome!

And if you aren't very picky with baby stuffs you can buy used cribs and items for a very good price here.

I came here in 2010 and found out we were expecting our 3rd 2 weeks later, unfortunatly we had donated all our stuff from our 1 year old as we weren't planning on having any more for another 2 years. So we had to purchase everything again, including the crib because it got broke in trascent. We were able to get the display model crib for $100 dollars, we purchased a top for our children's dresser to convert our son's dresser to a changing table. We found a nice 4-1 pack n go for $40.00 on yokosuka4sale, and we found a saucer outside in the lobby for free, and the bouncer as well for free, we purchased a traveling swing for $40 bucks and are tucking it away just in case lol and between my husbands coworkers and family back home sending clothing we had enough infant clothing to last her until she was 20 lbs. (enough to last a normal baby about a year lol) but our lil girls a porker and is 1 year this month and already in 24 months. So yes you can find everything you are looking for, I personally am not all the crib has to match the chair and the dresser and the room has to look like a magazine, I'm just happy the room is clean and the baby is healthy :o) So congrats!!

The furniture specifically I would definitely bring. The quality available on base is garbage. Pressboard stuff. You can special order but delivery can take 3 to 6 months. I personally love Japanese baby clothes so I like shopping for that stuff here. I also order from diapers.com and Amazon quite a bit.

Also, if you want to buy a crib out in town, bear in mind that the Japanese crib size is smaller so you can't use an American crib mattress or sheets, bumpers, etc.
