Can anyone give me an advice what is the smartest thing to do about housing. My husband wants to live off post. Are there any rental property(3 bedroom) near camp zama, if how much? We're looking at 2 to 5 miles away from the base. We have 13 and 14yr old kids, Do we have to transport them from our house (off post) to school or school Bus service would take care of it?..

    Hi Jen:
Sorry to burst your husbands bubble, but it's very unlikely that you will be able to live off-base unless you pay for it yourself. All families are housed on base, either at Camp Zama (3 bedrm highrise or 3 bedrm townhouses) or at Sagamihara Housing. I PCS'd last October and my preference was Sagamihara housing but nothing is available there and the housing office could not give an estimate when something would be available. I ended up with a townhouse which has a nice view of the Tanzama mountain range. If you have a pet you will be assigned a townhouse or house, as no pets are allowed in the highrise. I have 2 dogs coming next month. I was told that it's a Garrison policy that families / married couples are housed on-base.
BTW, I'm a civilian DoD employee.

I agree with Roy. They will have you live on base.

Zama has too much open housing, even most civilians get on-base housing if they are CONUS hires.

Thanks Roy! .. We don't have pets, but I have 2 teenagers and I'm due this April with a baby boy. Which from the three(3) housing is better on your opinion, based that my kids has to attend school, no car till out first year stay, my hubby will use his bike to get to his work and I would like a nice view!

    Thanks a lot!

The high school is on camp zama but if you get SHA they provide bus service to school. The high school starts at 730 and they get out at 230. Since you will require 4 bedrooms you will not be in the high rise.
