The Chapel of Hope, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan!
The Chapel of Hope is the largest religious program in the U.S. Navy.
It is a multi-faith community serving over 25,000 military, civilian and family members whom work and reside in Yokosuka, Negishi, and Ikego military housing areas. Many military families, and individuals also live off base in the Japanese community.
The Chapel of Hope offers several religious and spiritual opportunities for worship services, sacramental and pastoral ministries, children/youth ministries, spiritual music, community outreach, humanitarian service and religious education. We also offer pastoral counseling to individuals, couples, single Sailors, family members, and in emergency and crisis situations. Please see our section on religious services consisting of Protestant, Roman Catholic, Jewish, Gospel Services, Filipino Services, Protestant, Liturgical, Contemporary Christian Services, Church of Christ, Buddhist, Muslim, Latter-Day Saints (Mormon), Seventh-Day Adventist, Pentecostal, etc.
Ministry to people lies at the heart of who we are, and what we do everyday in the Chapel and in the military community. We are available and dedicated to fostering spiritual growth and fellowship in order to bring balance and wholeness to all whom seek a closer walk with God. If you are interested in volunteering or participating in any of our ministry programs: Choir, Roman Catholic and Protestant Youth Groups, Kids for Jesus (K4J), Sunday School, Bible Studies, COMPASS (Spouse Support Group), CCD (Confraternity Christian Doctrine), AWANA, QUEST, Japanese Women’s Bible studies, Protestant Women of the Chapel, Men’s Christian Fellowship, etc., please let us know. Please stop by and visit the Chapel. We would love to meet you, and assist you in finding a religious community that can address your needs.

Japanese Women's Bible Study
Tuesday mornings 9:00 to 11:30 a.m.
Japanese Women’s Bible Study (JWBS) started soon after World War II to help the many new Japanese wives of US military servicemen learn English using the Bible.
Today we offer Bible study in Japanese in a welcoming and nourishing atmosphere where the wonder of God’s Word may come alive.
For more information, contact the Chapel of Hope office or a JWBS leader.
AWANA
Tuesdays, 4:30 to 6:15, Yokosuka, Chapel of Hope
Wednesdays, 4:30 to 6:00, Ikego Elementary School
AWANA stands for “APPROVED WORKMEN ARE NOT ASHAMED.” It aims to teach children basic lessons about the Gospel of Jesus Christ through Bible stories, group interaction, and different events all in an atmosphere of fun and creativity. The program runs from September to May.
The program is divided into 3 clubs: Cubbies for 3 to 4 yrs. old; Sparks for Kinder to 2nd Graders and T&T (Truth & Training) for 3rd to 6th Graders. Each club night consists of council time, handbook time and game time. Awards are given to kids as they complete sections of the handbook. An annual Olympics is held in spring attended by the different AWANA clubs in the Kanto Plain area.
AWANA program in Yokosuka began in 1998. It averages 200 participants weekly for both Yokosuka and Ikego. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of its volunteers. Worldwide, there are 5,038 programs running with guidance and oversight from the host organization, AWANA Clubs International based in the United States.
Yokosuka Student Ministries
Yokosuka Student Ministries is the youth ministry for the Chapel of Hope. Yokosuka Student Ministries is made up of QUEST- the middle school group (grades 6-8) and One-Way- the high school group (grades 9-12).
Both QUEST and One-Way meet mid-week on Wednesdays, which is the primary connection point for the group. In addition, there is Q2 in the Ikego Housing Area. In addition to our mid-week meetings we have Bible studies to help our students learn and apply Biblical principles to everyday life and to grow and wrestle with life's questions in a safe community of their peers.
QUEST and One-Way also have a number of special events throughout the year. Special events include trips to amusement parks, service projects, 5th quarter events, worship nights, the Amazing Race- Yokosuka, and events with other youth groups within the Kanto Plain. The events provide opportunities for students to have a great time, make friends, and grow in their relationship with God.
We have a number of retreats for both the middle school and high school groups. Retreats are a great opportunity for our students to get out of Yokosuka and to focus on their relationship with God without the distractions of life.
The bottom line- Yokosuka Student Ministries is a great place to get involved. So come on out and join us for youth group or our next event. We look forward to seeing you there!
For more information or to get on our electronic update, please call the youth office at 243-6175.

Chapel of Hope
The Chapel of Hope occupies building 1313 at Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan. It is located near the Navy Exchange and Commissary complex along Third Avenue, directly across from the new fitness center. The Chapel is open daily from 7:30 a.m. till 7:30 pm., closed on U.S. holidays.
Inside the Chapel, the main sections consist of the Sanctuary, fellowship hall and kitchen, chaplain's offices, Jewish chapel, choir room, nursery, and ten classrooms. The Chapel Sanctuary seats 500 people; standing-room-only services can bring in over 600 at one time. This occurs most frequently during Christmas and Easter.
The fellowship hall is a multi-purpose area with sufficient room for 100 people to attend worship services, meetings, and fellowship activities.
Situated across the fellowship hall, the Jewish Chapel is utilized for Sabbath services and also by various groups for bible study, meetings, and religious classes for up to 30 people.
The Chapel's ten classrooms vary in size, but on average can accommodate 15 people comfortably. Classrooms 2 and 4 are separated by a removable partition; without the divider, a larger group--say, 30 people--may fit in them.
The Chapel nursery provides child care services while parents attend chapel programs.
The choir room is utilized to store musical literature, equipment, and also serves as a practice room for various choirs.
Right outside the Chapel's south entrance lies a Grotto for the Blessed Mother Mary. The lawn and flower beds are maintained by volunteers from the Chapel's Catholic community.
You may request to use any of the rooms in the Chapel . Please stop by the Chaplain's office, or fill out a Chapel Facility Usage Request Form during normal business hours which are Mondays-Fridays from 0730-1630. Because Chapel spaces are used frequently by many groups throughout the week, submitting your request ahead of time (one week in advance, in most cases; for weddings and bigger functions, three weeks notice is preferred) will allow us to fit your event into the schedule more easily.
Negishi, Chapel of the Rising Sun
The Chapel of the Rising Sun is located in the military housing side of Negishi, Yokohama naval detachment right next to the Child Development Center. The main sanctuary is newly furnished and seats 200 comfortably. There is also a small chapel next to the altar that is used for baptisms, prayer, and small group meetings. Inside the building, there are three office spaces, one classroom, and a fellowship/kitchen area that may also be used for bigger group meetings.
Ikego, Navy Housing, Kyoto Tower
Worship services at Ikego are held in the party room, first floor of Kyoto Tower. Since this room is used by tower residents for a variety of events, the worship setup is completely taken down after each service. Religious classes for Catholics are held at the Ikego elementary school every Saturday while the CCD class for high-schoolers is held in the party room.
