From what I understand they failed some kinda inspection to recertify to quaritne. MWR, I think it's MWR that runs them, has a list of approved kennels out in town and will pay the difference between price off base and the kennel price.

They are under new management and the new management determined they were not up to appropriate standards.

We had an issue at the base kennel today but they said nothing above...

We flew into Japan today and the lady claimed I wasn't on her list for incoming dogs today despite me personally making an appointment for them three months ago, calling and confirming quite a few times just to be sure everything was ok, and even asking our sponsor to confirm our reservation in person. The thing that really got me was that on her desk there is a large calendar and on today's date was my name and my dogs info so someone knew we were due to arrive today and that I had made an advanced reservation! I pointed this out to her because she kept insisting that I didn't have an appointment because I wasn't on some list. I was beyond livid. If they had said something like failing an inspection and not able to accept new dogs, I would been upset that they did not contact me in advance but I would have understood, I just couldn't get past the fact that she and her supervisor were basically saying I was lying even though I showed her my name was obviously noted by someone at the kennel.

I went through speaking to two supervisors on the phone before being given special permission to bring my dogs to the Navy Lodge. I guess it worked out though- I wasn't looking forward to kenneling them anyway. Crazy!

From my understanding b/c the base kennel isn't taking any animals that the Lodge is allowing small animals.

My sympathies to all the other residents of the Lodge. I know that sounds mean, and you kinda got screwed at the kennel, but I for one would not enjoy a dog living next door at the lodge.

This is terrible. I am thinking along the lines of ThaiGuy.... what happens if people are allergic to animals that are staying in the lodge. That would be pretty bad. I think like TheBakers said.. putting the animals on one floor might be a solution. I could see this entire thing turning into a nightmare myself. I hope everything works out for everyone involved though.

ThaiGuy, no offense taken and I completely understand your point, although I have found the wailing of toddler kids and dad yelling at them next door is just as annoying as the howling dogs they have in the room.

I was told by Navy Lodge staff that my dogs were not to out of my room without being carried or in a kennel and had to be kenneled if I was not in the room. Our room also has to be steamed cleaned after leaving and I *think* I am responsible for the extra charge but don't quote me on it (it was a Long day yesterday, lol!) Another family got here with dogs and they are staying in a room on the first floor like mine but theirs were very loud and howled for a few hours straight and it was pretty horrible, even for as a dog owner and lover. I was afraid they would tell both of us to leave due to the extra dog noise... I made sure the staff knew very clearly that if they got any complaints last night, it was not my dogs.

Thankfully for us, we have already been hotel bound with kids and dogs for two months prior to our arrival in Yokosuka so my dogs already are accustomed to smaller living quarters, used to be being in their kennels when we are gone and don't bark at general hotel noise from the hallways or above. It took us about a week initially to get over the challenges of being in a hotel so this is really no different for us and an even smaller shock to the dogs then if they had been welcomed and left at the kennel. Also, one of my guys is a 50 pound lab cross and the Lodge had no problem letting her in, as long as she didn't touch the floor outside of my room.

Shannon there is a dog park close to you as well if you want to let them run free once in awhile.. the yokosuka on is not great but it does the job.. Weh you leave the hotel take a left and go to the end the road curves to the left keep following it till you get to a giant field it has a fence around it. walk on the field and look to the far back right side you will see white fencing thats the dog run!! It's good to get there energy out and if you have kids it works for them too!! LOL

Awesome! We will explore the dog park today! My lab and my kids will appreciate it, lol! I went to the housing brief yesterday and it looks like we won't be waiting too long for housing as long as we accept Ikego townhome. At this point I don't care where they put us

Adverse conditions shut down Yokosuka Exchange kennel quarantine services

    Stars and Stripes
    Published: October 25, 2011

SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — Quarantine services at Yokosuka Naval Base’s Navy Exchange kennel temporarily have been shut down due to conditions that might be harmful to pets, Navy officials said Tuesday.

The kennel is open for all other services, including boarding pets, but the quarantine facilities were shut down after U.S. Army veterinarians found adverse conditions, including cracks in cement floors and structural deficiencies during inspection, according to base spokesman Sean Dath.
