    July 24, 2009
Back-in Parking Driving Seminar – Based on statistical data for all traffic accidents since the beginning of 2009, a large number of them have been the result of striking fixed objects or another vehicle while maneuvering in or out of a parking space. These minor collisions raise the overall number of traffic accidents for the installation and could create a false sense of a hazardous driving atmosphere. The good thing is that these types of collisions can be avoided and in most cases eliminated with a few adjustments to how we do business in regards to back-in parking and negotiating vehicle maneuvers in confined spaces. The CFAY Traffic Safety Division is extending an invitation to anyone who wishes to improve upon their driving skills with a short back-in parking seminar. There will be a short classroom session followed by a practical exercise. The event will take place in the parking area adjacent to building C-9. The primary date and time will be Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon (depending on class size) with a rain date of Aug. 15. All participants should be licensed drivers, 18 years of age and above. No sandals, open-toed shoes or children will be allowed. There will be a vehicle available for use. Call 243- 7354 no later than Aug. 5 to sign up for this seminar.

Right direction to go.  Notice how the Japanese community always back in while parking.

Here are some more ideas of which response is welcome:

    1) Write in in the driver's license exam.  Not should, but must.

    2) Include it in drivers education and practical driving exam.

    3) Include in newcomer's orientation.  It is rude to see all cars back backward and a Y plate the opposite.  Ruins the order that is safe as taught as a professional driver.

    4) We're in Japan.  Expect professional driver status as our host nation does.

    5) Never heard of a person getting a ticket for not parking backward.  Wonder how the Japanese do it.  What is the fine when it causes an accident?

    6) Make stiffer penalties for accidents caused by not backing-in during parking.

I agree although not all Japanese drivers park backwards.

I find myself backing in more offbase than I do onbase.

Not sure if that is a custom's thing, or you see more cars in that same fashion offbase.

I do think its safer when your pulling out. You can see what is infront of you instead of looking through a rear view mirror backing out.
