I don’t understand why the gate pass checking process differs between pedestrian and vehicle traffic

Q: I walk to work everyday. When personnel like me walk through the gate, security guards use a handy scanner (DBIDS) to read the barcode printed on the back side of the gate pass/ID card. However, those who enter the gate in vehicles seem to be only showing their gate pass to the guards. Force protection condition should be equal to everyone. I don’t understand why the gate pass checking process differs between pedestrian and vehicle traffic. I also wonder if we can check in with our work site when the barcode could not be recognized.

A: Thank you for your question. We have many force protection measures that are conducted at our gates. Vehicular traffic ID scanning is conducted at different times. During high traffic periods we must be aware of traffic congestion to our host nation streets outside the gate to ensure we do everything to reduce possible traffic hazards. If the bar code on your gate pass/ID card is not being able to be read at the gate, you will need to go to the Industrial Security Office and update your DBIDS registration.

I have a similar question. Why are we required to remove headgear that doesn't cover the face, i.e. no brim, but I have seen many Japanese Nationals passing through the gate wearing the facemask which covers everthing but the eyes. Seems like a huge double standard that I find rather offensive.

Good point. I've been asked *rudely* to remove my sunglasses from my head (the ones I just removed from my face so they could identify me.

This is why I use the "Japanese side" of the front gate prior to 10pm. A little bit of respect and tact goes a long way with me. Bravo Zulu Nihon no Kaigun!

Not to mention if you're in a car, you can have a face mask on, sun glasses, ball cap and a hoodie..........come on through!!

I can almost understand not having to remove headgear in a car because they have your license plate on video, but the standards should be the same across the board. If someone can cover their face with a mask then hat or shades shouldn't be an issue.

And if everyone know how to read it is also clearly posted for all to read. In english and in Japanese. I was coming through the gate a bit while back and couple infront of me had head gear and sunglasses, so the sentry first asked them politely to remove the items to which the couple quickly reacted with an attitude. So therefore the sentry asked more strong toned, once again now the male rebutted something. To which the sentry was like well please excuse me sir but do you know how to read?!?! Male: What is that supposed to mean?!?! Sentry: Nothing Sir is just that the instructions for entering the quarter deck are clearly expalined on the sign right there while he pointed at the sign.
    The guys face was priceless.

What about the other gates? At Daie and Womble gates you also have to remove your hats and glasses.  I personally have no problem with having to remove my glasses and/or hat.  I've always figured it was a military thing, I'm here as a civilian.

There another discussion about removing headwear at the gates somewhere around JB.com.

To this Gaijin guy here, well if you must know there are several security layers that are in place at the gates. So guess what if the MP's or the sentries tell you to remove it........Then you gonna remove it and keep about your bussiness, point and simple. It ain't rocket science!!!
It's funny how many grown men and women question everything, I wish I could see them stateside in the presence of law enforcement. Cop:Sir please get your hands out of your pocket and remove your head gear. American prior living in Yokosuka: But why?!?! Cop: do it do it now. American prior living in Yokosuka: But I dont understand. Cop:Taser, Taser, Taser!!!! LMAO!!!!!

The person I quoted said that it was because the main gate is a quarterdeck.  I've seen the sign at the main gate stating that it is a quarterdeck.  I was just wondering if the other gates are also quarterdecks.  Like I said I'm a civilian.  I don't know.

I also said that I have no problem removing my hat and glasses at the gates.  I always do.  I don't question it, or try to get by without doing it.  I was just trying to point out that not everybody complains about having to follow the rules.

I personnaly have no problems with this regulation, but it does seem similiar to the TSA and being frisked/x-rayed at the airport, when the commercial cargo thats loaded is not checked.

The fact of the matter is if there is a chink in the armour, the bad folks will exploit it, how many blocks of semtex can you hide on a 250 cc "big" scooter?

    Helmet...check
    sunglasses under helmet .......check
    stolen MLC ID card.....check
    enter at peak of traffic....check
components for bomb now on base.....check.

remember not all bad guys are necessarily middle eastern.....

    (most of them are politicians)

Poop Deck: In naval architecture, a poop deck is a deck that forms the roof of a cabin built in the rear, or "aft", part of the superstructure of a ship.
The name originates from the French word for stern, la poupe, from Latin puppis

Forget all these other petitions, we need a petition to rename all the quarterdecks back to a poop deck! Why does the Navy get rid of all the cool stuff of naval history? Back to the days of ponytails, beards, earrings, alcohol on ships and POOP DECKS!
