gotta have the passport.  passport photo for newborns are taken by the publicity dept. at the hospital-second floor.  Definitely get the power-of-attorney for your husband or you won't be going anywhere.

It took me about a month to get everything in order to get the passport. You can take the picture as soon as the baby can keep it's eyes open. If your husband isn't gonna be home to get the passport with you then there is a form that he has to sign saying he allows you to get it without him.

it can take over a month for you to receive the passport in the mail, or any other documents you apply for at the embassy. might want to keep that in mind when you buy your plane tickets. good luck!

Not that you need another thing to think about, but I think you also have only 120 days to get the baby listed on Tricare Prime. So, if you plan on being in the states for awhile, make sure you file the forms with the Tricare office after getting Deers set up. Also, talk to Pediatrics/Tricare about how to set up well-baby check-ups and take care of immunizations if you are in a different Triccare region. I did a lot of traveling with our daughter when she was young and it helps to have all the information on how to get care before you need it (especially with the time difference). Some of the things I keep track of are: who to call for approval, what type of visits are approved, if there are any military treatment facilities in the area, which pediatricians/hospitals in the area take Tricare, etc.

Also, the form your husband has to sign is on the Department of State website. You can follow their application step-by-step and you get to a point where the extra forms come up. You might also ask Navy Legal if they recommend having a general notarized letter from your husband saying it is okay to take the baby in and out of the country. I needed one to take our 1 year old to Canada during a deployment. The letter was in addition to the passport and just stated that he was the father and gave permission for me to take her and listed a contact phone number (using the sat phone). Funny thing is the US cared more about permission coming back into the US than Canada did to enter.

Hope everything works out for you before you even need to leave.

The folks at FFSC might be able to answer more questions for you than your OB will have time to at your appointment. Some of the steps for the Birth Abroad Certificate, SSN, Passport, etc are covered in the classes they offer. Definitely at least give them a try if you're OB isn't able to answer everything for you. Good luck!

Good luck to you, sounds so complicated!

Would going back to the US before baby is born be an option? It almost sounds like it'd be easier!
