So, once in a blue moon, I get a craving for McDonald's.  It doesn't happen very often, but today, I wanted some greasy french fries and a good, fatty hamburger.  So, I eagerly went to McDonalds (the one on Yokosuka Base) and to my disappointment, they were out of practically everything!

I asked the young lady at the counter why they were sold out of everything, but in her limited English, I could not get a very good response.  She finally had another person tell me.....well, apparently, they're out of hamburger buns. WHAT?!  How does McDonalds run out of hamburger buns?

My husband said that this is typical w/ the Yokosuka McDonald's.  He said years ago he can remember when they ran out of french fries.  Huh?!  That's their main product!  I don't remember a/thing like this happening on Yokota Air Base when I lived there.

Has a/one on any of the other bases experienced this problem?

    Ridiculous.

Yokota gets EVERYTHING! We went up there and were SO impressed with everything from the good service at Chili's to the establishment itself. We did however order chicken crispers and they were out, but we didn't mind it because we felt pampered just being on the base! My husband grew up an Air Force Brat and he says almost all AF bases are like that.

But yes, this McDonald's here on Yokosuka Base is always out of something. Of course we usually get the last delivery and get what's left over I guess... Or maybe it's just that they are given a REALLY short leash on how much quantity they can order at a time, but their number one thing to be out of is SWEET & SOUR SAUCE for the nuggets, secondly on the always out charts is CHICKEN for the chicken sandwiches! UGH!

I feel your pain Yoko-Girl... just when I was thinking it had been a while since going to McDonald's and started thinking it might be a good time to go get me some grub... (I was going to go today during lunch!) Glad you posted--even if it was only to vent.

I went there a couple of weeks ago and that's what the menu looked like! I didn't ask why, but I opted for a chicken sandwich instead.

They don't care because the NEX gets a major cut of their profits. It's typical of how the contractors get away with murder on the military bases because of lack of supervision. The people in charge of supervising these activities have been here so long that they get in cozy relationships with the locals. The Commodore's standing night orders are:  "Transfer the senior supervisors after five years."    That is all.

If they are always running out of everything, maybe it should just be a real Japanese McDonald's. They have a better menu anyways. If we're talking about hamburgers, to heck with McDonald's. Let's get a Red Robin out here! Yummmmmm

I second the motion for a Red Robin!! I think its a little crazy that they can be out of their main item. I dont eat fast food often but I get the occasional craving for good junk food. Hope they fix this!

The Commodore recommends staying at home and buying some Hamburger Helper with Wonder Bread. You'll save money and eat better than in that Greasy Spoon.

Ok, is this Commodore thing a passing phase or something we'll just have to get used to? I guess the sense of grandeur is harmless but what's with the 3rd person? Also, be careful of passing off opinion & hyperbole as fact.

It happens in the states too... There was a Taco Bell where we lived in Connecticut that once ran out of tortillas for the soft tacos, another time ran out of cheese, and a third time ran out of napkins!! Seriously!! Eventually that store was taken over by corporate Taco Bell people...

Quality of service there has been plummeting. When I first got here they were great about making sure the order was right. Now every time they screw it up. I agree, the Japanese McDonalds have better menus. Teriyaki burger! YUM!

    Dear Thai Dude,

The only evidence I need is you are reading my blogs and loving every minute of it. My observation is a summation of my experiences working with the federal government on dozens of military bases throughout the world, that's all. Look at what happened with Vice President Cheney and Halliburton as a prime example.

    That is all ...

Mrs. Leonard~Don't get your hopes up that the problem will be fixed...I have lived in Japan for almost 5 yrs...3 in Sasebo and almost 2 here in Yokosuka...Same issues in Sasebo...they run out of items and nothing you can do about it...Japanese Mcd's is far better except they don't have sweet/sour sauce but you always get a bow from the cashiers b/c their customer serivce is far better than any you will get on base...

They spent so much money on salt for the fries, there was nothing left to spend on buns.

McDonald's on Yokosuka base is always sold out of something.

When I first got here they were blaming it on the earthquake. Now, I just think that's how it is. They never have sweet and sour sauce. They never have chicken for chicken sandwiches. And every time I use the drive thru, I have to pull up and wait for something.

I suppose its a good thing because it really discourages me from eating fast food. And base makes it too easy by having a drive thru.

Well they made it a little harder when they got rid of the parking between the park and the water.  Now you have to fight over parking by PSD.

I ran into the McDonald's on Blue Street this morning and they had signs with red characters covering their hamburgers/sandwiches. It is possible the ones in town are out of products also. Could be that the GW pulled back in? Not that it is a valid excuse for running out of buns, but a possible explanation.

Mom of 3 Redheads - you have to be talking about the Taco Bell on Rt 12 in Groton, unless it is a regional problem in CT in general. I remember as far back as 1998 that place taking 30-40 minutes just to fill an order. They were the worst. Our Taco Bell in college ran out of tortillas one night. I had the pleasure of being the designated driver that evening. Still laugh about the drunk guys in the car asking how Taco Bell runs out of tortillas.

    Yoko, this is pretty crazy...

I spoke with someone today, and they said at lunch its still SOLD OUT... Pretty funny...

I would think they would try and work with an off-base McDonalds to allocate more buns, or even contact other bases nearby and see about possibly getting a loan of goods until their new stock comes in...

Honestly, I have never seen a McDonalds do this in the states. It just got me thinking, why are the standards lower here, that we can run out of things?

Correct me if I am wrong, but isnt it the managements job to ensure the store continues to operate efficiently at all times? Isnt that their role?

The difference with stateside run operations are most of them are franchise owned. So owners wouldnt allow the business to be out of stock for very long. They also would probably network with many nearby stores if they were out of a specific sauce, burger, bun, or french fries in order to stay operating..

Thats what you call team work, which is why I asked, Did they ever think to contact another nearby base?

Yokosuka base runs out of EVERYTHING. If you see something on the shelf and you want it, go ahead and buy it....if you come back next week chances are it's all going to be sold out.

EVERYTIME I go to that McDonald's they're sold out of something.

However, it probably has a lot to do with the boats coming back. I drove by McDonald's the other night and it was packed to the wall with young sailors.

There's a customer service survey for NEX owned restaurants that CFAY posted on Facebook today. Yokosuka seems to be listed under Singapore instead of Japan, though.

Me and my wife went to eat at Yokosuka McDonalds last week.

My wife said, that one of the Japanese female employees was coming out from the stall as she was walking in. She turned around and saw the lady head straight for the door. She didnt wash her hands.

So when my wife sat back at the table, she asked me.. Do the employees wash their hands somewhere else?

I said, I doubt it. She was a little sick because she had the thought of employees not washing their hands handling her food.

So if someone from the organization is reading this please do a safety brief with your employees.

Its probably been a while, and its probably something that should be done yearly anyhow.
