Does anyone know where I can buy some around Yokosuka? I'm feeling awful homesick for some, and I haven't had any luck finding any.

Any Japanese major grocery store has a section that has Kimchi in containers.

You gotta look in the refrigerated section in the Japanese grocery store. As Adam, ALL grocery stores usually carry it.....you shouldn't have a hard time at all finding it here in Japan. The commissary even carries some, although, I think the quality is probably better off base.

If you must have it authentic go to Koreatown in Yokohama. It's about 4 blocks from the Yokohama Medical center. It will be a bit expensive. I've only found Kim mu chi in Yokosuka... What the Japanese call kimchi... A bit too sweet to be authentic.

You could always make you own.

I noticed whenever I ordered kimchi in Japan it was pickled cabbage with the red spices and sauce rather than the traditional fermented cabbage. Same as any I have gotten from various grocery stores. I am very familiar with the dish after living in S. Korea in the past and outside of Korea it has been very rare to find it prepared without the cabbage being pickled. Possibly it would be served in a traditional Korean restaurant.

    Shannon,
It IS served in SOME tranditional Korean restaurants. Han Il Kwan across from New Yokosuka is good. Shorien YakiNikku near Misaki Guchi Station is the best I've found in this area and I've done most of the restaurants over the years. Exit the train station and go left towards Miisaki. Continue to the next traffic light just before the Family Mart, the turn to Mito Hama. There is an electrical shop on the left and right next to it is Shorien; yellow sign with red lettering. Closed Mondays, hours are 18-2300. Local favorite. No Enlish but they will bend over backward to help.
Go to local established markets in any area; that requires some searching. I used to get mine in the market area of Ofuna many years ago. I believe they're still there but go and seek on your own. Visit Ofuna Kanon and the Flower Center and make an afternoon of it.
