The following topics were discussed at the Negishi Town Hall Meeting held

Q: What can be done about pet droppings all around the base?

(OIC): Having pets in the housing area is a privilege, pet owners are responsible to remove pet droppings. It is a written instruction.

This is true having your pet with you is a privilege. My family & I will possibly transferring in May 2010 to Japan. We would like to hear others experience about reporting with their pets.

We have this problem on Ikego, and its disgusting! I have walked around over the last few days and seen big lots of pet poop all over the place, we have kids running around here and there have been numerous reminders to people about picking up after their pets, but some people just don't care!

Everyone knows this is a courtesy to pick up after your animals. Look at how well the Japanese treat their animals. Almost like part of the family. My mother in law (Japanese) takes a dog for a walk 3 - 4 times a day, and gives the dog a bath each time they come back home. They bring these little poop bags to pick up after the dog. After the dog is finished on the road, I was shocked one day I went with her, and she wiped the dogs rear end after he finished.. I said, "What are you doing!!!" In Public....!! But thats how the feel about the animals.. People should start to take notice at how Japanese are so into their customs, and its not always about laziness or not wanting to pick up after your animals, its about doing what is right, and feeling how to best show the animal that you care about them...

I just wanted to mention this again, because the problem persists. It's bad enough when poop is left in the grass...but on the sidewalks? PLEASE, PLEASE pick up your dog's poop. Everyone has to use these sidewalks, including children who don't pay attention where they're stepping(and they shouldn't have to) can track it into the house. You can use commissary bags, sandwich bags, or buy special poop bags, it doesn't matter as long as it's off the ground and in the can. Heck you can even use a spoon and dump it directly in the can.

Japanese are the best at this off-base. I just think people are flat out lazy and don't think they have to pick it up.

At our last residence they charged offenders $25 if caught, and other people could report them. It'd be nice if we could do something like that... maybe they'd think twice. But probably not.

You best be sure I'd report people, though.

I'm sure most people off base are great with their pets, but I have seen piles of it off base. Usually under the trees in the park. Maybe they're not J nationals, I don't know.

So did they have to be on tape or just an accusation? They could say 'oh that wasn't me'. How did people prove it?
I'm all for privacy, but sometimes I wish there were cameras on the streets so people would pick up the poo!

The base should invest in some coprophagous insects and release them around the areas to clean up after the pets. Because I don't clean up after mine, why would I want to walk around with a bag of poop?

Elzey02 - I hope you were kidding when you said you don't pick up after your dog. I have two dogs and I don't care to drag around a bag full of their s**t either, but I do it because it is the "thoughtful and responsible" thing to do. I wouldn't want s/one to step in s**t that one of my dogs left behind.

the way I figure if some higher being is looking at us what will they think? Poop is also good fertilizer for the grass, we should keep that in mind.

Dog poop is not good fertilizer for the grass....it kills the grass.

its cool, just throw in some compost mixed with other natural materials, (I.E. old grass clippings, broken down weeds, egg shells, etc.) and allowed to break down over time it will be cool.

Sorry but those are just lazy excuses.

Do what you will in your own yard, but you're infringing on others' rights to a clean common area when you aren't being a responsible dog owner.

Pret is that in Negishi? If you see a kid do that, I would take a bag and run up to the kid and tell them to pick it up. I know someone who yelled out their window at an adult who was going to leave the poo there. The crazy thing was that she had bags..just didn't use them. I think Adam is right that some just don't care. So how do you get people to care..? The only things I can think of are $ and inconvenience. Maybe it's time for housing to fine people when caught.

Money and inconvenience I also want to add, people can care if you explain to them "why" its so important that we car.

Someone make a unique video. I mean one that showcases all that poop all over the bases. Have on camera those that are guilty showing them doing it (blurr there face) just provide a way to focus on Stop Doing This!!!

One thing I have learned from AFN: play a video over and over and over.. People could tell you the message from the video and word for word of the video from heart. I say put it on the main page of the site, get it streaming over the internet, make it a required message for senior's to explain to the sailors, and get afn it run it non stop.

I'm sure cfay, negishi, ikego are not the only bases having issues with the care factor of crap laying all around the base. Its probably happening all across japan.

well we have 2 dogs and my teenage son walks them both and brings a bag to pick up after them and he does do it. i can not imagine him being so disrepectful to our fellow neighbors. We are currently living in va beach housing and it is a problem here also. BUT can I also say people have to pick up after there dogs in there yards also because if they don't the smell is horrible. SHAME on those dog owners for not doing the right thing.

I'm doing the right thing out here, its not my problem!!! Animals have been going out side since the don of time, why should I clean up after them. OK with this insane logic of you people maybe I should clean up after the birds that poop around base as well. Just so people want have to step in it, or maybe I should start cleaning up the water supply after the fishes take there poops. When will this insane stuff stop? Like I have said before there are other creatures that eat the poop and we are taking away its food source, how would you like it if I came into your home and took your food?

So, if it's not your problem, who's is it? The poop fairy? How would you feel if you had kids that tracked it in all over your house?

Not only that, but dog feces spread parasites and other diseases. You would feel really bad if your dog suddenly got sick with parvo and DIED!

There is one of 2 things going on here with you, Elzey:

    1. You are intentionally starting this argument with an asinine point of view.
    2. You are ignorant, and actually believe that you are doing the right thing.

    Which one is it?

So, if you kill someone else's dog, it's ok? If your dog has some deadly disease and someone is out walking their puppy, and their puppy gets sick because it's immune systems isn't strong enough to fight the disease, it's ok?! You are really selfish if you believe that. My brother's dog got sick with parvo and it died. He loved that dog.

Oh, and we're so happy to hear that your kids are so brilliant and they're not "dump" (dumb) enough to track dog s**t throughout the house.

And like I have already stated, I don't like taking food for the coprophagous insects. See Hoff I can use big words as well...lol
And as for your brother's dog I'm truly sorry, but as they say in nature survival of the fittest, must not have made the cut.

Elzey--But we're not in nature...we're in the city. If you can't understand the difference, then I have to assume you are just looking for an argument.

Listen, it sucks that you all have this problem. Maybe you should teach your pet to poop before you go outside and you will not have this problem...lol Maybe one day I can teach you how to train your pet to be smart enough not to eat poop or poop just anywhere. Again I don't clean up my pet poop out side nor will I walk around with a bag like a silly person cleaning up after them. What would someone think if they were looking down on us and saw that type of behavior, us running around cleaning up after them?

I could only imagine what Elzey02's house might look like, if pet droppings aren't picked up in their own yard.BLAH! If you are that lazy to drag the bags to your house, which there is no need to do because every 100 feet there is a trash can, then you are just disgusting. I'll guarantee you, if I ever see you leave a pet dropping, I'll take your picture myself and take it to OIC and security. Why should I have to walk over your pet droppings? I am considerate and don't leave my pet droppings for you to step on. You continue to reply to this post just to annoy people. The only reason I responded was to let you know that if you are in Negishi, I will report you.

Coav.....I hope other people in Negishi do the same as you. Have your camera phone handy! I also just took a screen shot of this forum. If any of you do capture elzey in the act, then you can print up the screen shot as further proof that he's not picking up after his pet. Because we all know that he would try to pull a fast one by saying "I didn't do it....it wasn't me."   WRONG, you just admitted to the world that you would do it!

So, everyone in Negishi, you know who to look out for....take a good look at his picture and his pit.
