Okay, so I'm already here but I'm going home in October to bring my cat here. She's 10lbs, in good health. She has the microchip, has had 2 rabies vaccines within the past year (her first one was June 2010), had the blood test done and it came back fine.

I haven't done the 40 days notification yet because I don't have an exact date. How exactly do I do this 40 days notification thing?

Also, what is the best airline for flying animals? I'd prefer to fly her in the cabin with me so I can keep an eye on her if possible.

I don't know if this matters but my starting location will be Kansas City and my base is Yokosuka. Thanks!

You can get the 40 day notification form from www.maff.go.jp/aqs/english/animal/dog/pdf/notification-cat.pdf. You can submit the form without the date and then do a modification form when you know the date. I went through this 2 years ago. E-mail them at na-k2@maff-aqs.go.jp and tell them you don't know the date yet but would like to submit the form. They will walk you through all the steps. They are absolutely WONDERFUL and their customer service is SUPERB. They respond back practically instantly and answer ANY questions you have. My friend ended up bringing out my cat so I can't remember what airline she used - I THINK it was Delta. She had him with her in the cabin. When you book your flight, let the airline know you will be flying your cat in-cabin - they only allow a limited number of pets in the cabin. Has your cat finished the 6 months quarantine or are you living on base where she can finish it? If you have any other questions, feel free to message me. I kept all the information about the process when I went through it.

Has the e-mail address changed? na-k2@aqs.maff.go.jp is what I used this spring to take my pets to and from the states and it worked. I'm not sure if the addresses are both good, but I know this one worked 2 months ago. I tried to find it on the website to make sure I wasn't giving you bad information, but I just see fax numbers (which is what I used to make the initial contact when I brought them to Japan... pricey for international faxes).

Don't sweat it. No one is able to give 40 days notification, but Donna's right. Leave the date blank and work with them to update it when you're able. They are very helpful and prompt with replies! Even if you have a last minute change, like a cancelled flight, you can submit a modification form and they will handle everything quickly.(http://www.maff.go.jp/aqs/english/a...tion.pdf). It's labeled dog in the link, but it's the same for dogs and cats.
