    Japan Rainy Season Safety -

Its that time of year again, with the Spring season coming to an end the

    Rainy Season begins.

Here are some things we should all apply some serious thought to for vehicle safety:

    1. Don't park near hillsides, landslides and falling rocks will definitely muddy up your day or worse.

    2. Replace your windshield wipers, don't find out that you need them replaced while driving in a rain storm.

    3. Check your tires, this will help prevent "Hydroplaning". Tires are considered bald when one or more of their grooves reaches 2/32 of an inch deep, compared with about 10/32 of an inch for new tires (tread wear is usually measured in 1/32-inch increments). Manufacturers have made bald tires easier to spot by placing molded horizontal bars at the base of the grooves. The bars become flush with surrounding tread when wear reduces a groove's depth to 2/32 of an inch. That's also the point where tires will flunk a state safety inspection. Unfortunately, 2/32 of an inch may be too late if you drive in rain or snow. You may want to consider shopping for new tires on your vehicle closer to the 4/32-inch groove depth.

Really? Was that it for rainy season? I was under the impression it rains for days non-stop? What about typhoon season? Is that two different things?

Yup......that's about it.  Rainy season changes from year to year.  Some years we have more rain than others.  We'll probably get a few more days of rain here and there throughout the next week or so.  Now, brace yourself for the super hot humidity to kick in!

Same thing with typhoon season.....sometimes we have an active season, sometimes we don't.  Last year was really mild.  We'll see about this year.

One thing I wish they had more of around here is thunderstorms.  I love a good thunderstorm, but you hardly have any here in Japan.

Awe man! I LOVE thunderstorms! I'm originally from Austin, Texas so we get some good ones! (Of course a lot of times it is during tornado season and that's not a good part of the storms, but ya know...) The last several years before coming here I was in San Diego, so I missed those storms there too. Lol! Oh, well...

When does typhoon season come around?

Rainy season usually starts around the beginning of May for southern regions of Japan (Okinawa area) and around the beginning of June for the Kanto Area (Tokyo / Yokohama). Northern Japan (Hokkaido) usually stays relatively dry during this time of year. You can expect the rainy season to continue until about the first part of July. It may not rain every day, but it's usually overcast with the sun poking out every now and then. After rainy season, you can expect it to get HoT and VeRy HuMiD!

Typhoon season usually starts around May/June and goes until about September. It usually picks up later in the season and peaks around the month of September. Once typhoon season is over, you can expect pleasant skies and comfortable weather throughout the fall.
