The commisary has awful produce with short shelf life---so can somebody in Yokosuka tell me somewhere near base to go and get good produce and if you recommend something new not available in the states? thanks

The closest to the base is the Daiei, (the big pinkish building on the base side of 16).  They have a grocery store inside, 2nd floor. You can get there via the main gate of course or there is a walking gate behind the Daiei that is open mon-fri, 0600-2000  (red star is the CPO club, yellow is the Daiei, and the gate is circled)

Probably the next closest would be the Seiyu on blue street.  Left hand side of blue street, at the third stop light you should see the sign.  Store is downstairs.  There's another downstairs (basement really) of Moore City (that's the mall at the Yokosuka-chuo station)  All of these a pretty much walking distance.

If you feel like going farther both Livin and Ave are good.  They are both down along the seawall from the base

Most things you'll probably recognize, though there are some things that are different, I think the root vegetables will probably be the most unfamiliar things. Japanese sweet potatoes for example are nothing like the US ones.

I always buy my produce in that little covered strip along Blue Street (Mikasa Mall). There's one several stores down past the McDonalds and one other one further on down past Soft Bank and the Beef Bowl restaurant. The prices are good and the produce is fresh. I hardly ever buy my veggies or fruit on base. I find them to be quite expensive, and of poor quality (although, it has improved since the new manager of the commissary moved into town). Still, the produce off base in much, much cheaper. Sometimes on Fridays, this little old lady sets up a product stand at the entrance of Mikasa Mall selling fresh fruit and veggies. Her prices are very cheap (even in comparison to off base grocery stores).

If you got a bicycle, you can ride your bike to Livin. It's about a 10 -15 minute bike ride. Livin and Ave are both grocery stores. But, in my opinion, if you're just looking for cheap, but good produce, then just head right off base to Mikasa Mall. Livin and Ave are both good if you need to do full blown grocery shopping. Their prices are pretty good compared to other grocery store chains.

I like the litte fruit and vegetable stand next to the Thai place about a block off 16, just go right past the entrance to Saikaya. It's almost right across the street from saizerya. they have these beans that look like large misshapen lima beans that have become a favorite in our house. YOu have to split them with a knife and then steam them. Very good! I like all the fdifferent stores for the variety of mushrooms. If you are not buying and regularly cooking and eating all the different mushrooms, you are missing a lot of Japan. Mushrooms are to Japan as olives are to Spain

Seiyu and Ave is one the best stores to get a good deal.

Seiyu and LIVIN seemed to be owned by Wal-mart or at least have a partnership with them because you can find Wal-mart merchandise.

Ave is like a Fred Meyer to me because it has a large retail side with an awesome grocery side. It's best if you can get someone to drive you. However, you can get a taxi. 046-833-0001 is a number you can call to get an "Offbase On base Taxi." You can tell because they have a yellow tag on their grill that says "FAYC".

Taxis start at 710 yen. From my house which is near Homes to the comissary costs about 1500 yen on a good day. (2000 on a bad one) There is a 300 yen charge for callling a taxi. Also you need to have a carseat to get youngins onto base. (Base rule more than off base taxi rule. Actually had one taxi yesterday put my carseat in the trunk! LOL)

Buses start at 170 yen. Bus #31 Yasuura 2-chome will take you near Homes. It's a short walk from the final stop. If you take Bus #24 Kannozaki it will drop you off on Hwy 16 and you'll have to walk a bit farther. (side note: Kannozaki Park is awesome! Just ride the bus all the way to the end. And then walk up to the top of the hill, great play area.)

I hope you have a wonderful experience! Good luck!
To enjoy Japan you gotta go out and experience it! Need a buddy, msg me!

Is there any place in Zushi with great produce for a good price? I just hate to make my way all the way to Yokosuka when there is stuff near hear. I've good to a few places, but wanted to see what other people would recommend. Thanks!

yes, I think the store is the cheapest around Yokosuka and Zushi
the owner runs the store using Walmart style as a model.
