Q: With the USS George Washington (CVN 73) back in port the number of pedestrians on base has risen. A lot of these pedestrians do not know the “do’s and dont’s” in regards to pedestrian safety on base. I have seen them walking through the tunnels with the flow of traffic not in the provided sidewalks. A lot of the pedestrians are wearing dark colored clothing which makes it very difficult to see them especially when they walk out into traffic without looking. The community at large, I feel does a very good job looking out for the pedestrians on base. It would be easier and safer if the pedestrians could assist as well.

A: Thank you for your comments and suggestions. Pedestrian safety information is discussed at the Area Orientation Brief (AOB) and monthly Traffic Safety Committee meetings. We will continue to educate people via base newspapers and TV. While it is always a good idea to wear reflective or brightly colored clothing, there is no requirement to do so unless engaged in physical fitness activities.
