Do any of you civilians have recommendations on which Medical care provider is best for the Yokosuka area:  BCBS, SAMBA, GEHA, FS Benefit Plan, etc.  BCBS is the only one that has a list of providers for Japan that I have actually been able to find.  Any insight would be helpful. This is new territory for me.

I personally use BCBS. I think most everyone in my office does as well. That said the thing you want to take a close look at is how they do with providers that are not in their plan, specifically you want to take a look at how much the individual plans will pay (% or $) if you use a non-preferred provider. (I honestly haven't done this in a while)

For example the last time I checked the only providers BCBS listed were actually in Tokyo, well that's nice but I use the base hospital for most everything (if you are a stateside hire you should be able to as well), the hospital bills BCBS and then I get a bill for whatever the insurance doesn't cover. The more the insurance pays, the less that comes out of my pocket.

Thanks for the info.  It occurred to me that I should compare the non-preferred provider coverage, but then I was worried that their fee schedules could be completely different for overseas.  I look at that coverage again. I wasn't sure about using the base hospital, but it sounds like I qualify to use it.  Thanks again!
