After a stressful week at work (and then getting pounded in the forums here  )
I like to take a drive on the weekend as far away from the base as I can and get out doing my second favorite pastime , bird watching. Japan has hundreds of species that either reside in, or migrate through the country. With such a diverse climate, from the frozen mountains of Hokkaido (where the "Yummy" milk comes from) to the sunny beaches of Okinawa, there are countless places to visit searching for our feathered friends. For those of us on Yokosuka, it seems all we have are Crows and what most people call "Seahawks" but there really are many more birds than that. If anyone is interested in learning more about birds or by chance if there is another birder out there, contact me and we can head out some weekend!

[A note on the "Seahawks", this is not what the birds are. They are "Black-Eared Kites" (Milvus lineatus) and are taxonomically speaking, somewhere between Osprey and Bald Eagle. Yes, those pesky snack thieving birds are close relations to our National symbol!]

You should hook up with Mr. Duncan at YMS, he's a bird watcher also (though he's up in Yokosuka). You can check out some of his bird photos on his website http://www.ourgeojapan.net
My son got extra credit for knowing those birds were black kites, not seahawks- was told he was one out of handful of kids to know that over the years, lol.

I love watching birds too! It drives me crazy when people call the kites "seahawks". LOL

Looks like I'm a year late on this post, but I'm heading out to Yokosuka this week, and will be there for three years. I'm also an avid birdwatcher and am super excited about getting to learn a new set of birds. Are the folks who started this post still around Yokosuka? And thank you to Yambarudan for the great pictures of local birds!
