So I keep seeing these Japanese kiddos running around in shoes that squeak, and are so awesome.  Having a 18 month old running around, I have been wanting a pair (easier to figure out where she is LMAO).  I asked someone and they said Livin, but I couldn't find them there today.  Tried explaining to one of the girls who works there, but no luck.  It was pretty comical actually

Anyway - can anyone help me here?  Is there another store that would have them?  I also looked at the daiei by base (there's a kids store on the 4th floor that has a lot of nifty stuff, but not the shoes.  Squeaky mittens, but not shoes).  TIA

we got our son's squeaky shoes from the shoe store on blue street, right by the train station. its on the 2nd story.
but our little one prefers the light up shoes and his chucks over them.

Dea - are you talking about the store in more's city? Or is there another shoe store above Mikasa?

Thaiguy - it isn't that I think its cute, its just that she is very active, and being that I am 7 1/2 months pregnant it is hard to keep up with her. I personally find them slightly annoying but would rather deal with a little annoying sound to keep her safe.

yup the one above more city, i understand the pregnant thing, i have 6 more weeks!!! we tried a leash on our little one and he used it as a swing he would run and jump and swing on it lol. Lately I try to correspond my shopping days with hubby's days off because its entirely too tiring trying to keep up with my 22 month old monster!! lol. Hope it goes by quickly for you, it seems like the last couple of months are in slow motion with my pregnancies.

just wondering... how did moms keep tabs on their little ones before squeaky shoes?

Likewise, how did the human race survive dehydration before bottled water was invented?

How did any of us ever stay in touch before mobile phones?

    Questions for the ages.

It's weird, I look at all those cutesy shoes and think they're cute but know I'd never actually buy shoes like that for my kiddo. He's worn only Nike's, DC's Etnies's and Chuck Taylors!

Dea - Awesome, I will have to check that out this weekend. This pregnancy has gone by so fast, its nuts. LMAO about the leash! Our monkey swings if shes holding two people's hands, but the leash.... its like trying to get a cat to walk on a leash lol. she turns circles trying to get the stuffed monkey to play with it hahaha. And I totally do the same thing with shopping. She's too fast for me to keep up with.

Thaiguy - its a good thing I've read enough of your posts to know your sense of humor For your first one though - they had villages of people to help, and buttloads of kids to keep track of the younger ones (Go watch Monty Pythons Meaning of Life LMAO!!!!!).

Sams0nit3.... If those shoes weren't so bloody expensive and kids didn't grow out of them so freaking fast.... She has one pair of DC's that my friend gave her for her birthday, but mostly I get a lot of shoes from my sister who has a little girl just about a year older than mine, so it works great

Really... not to be mean or anything but I KNOW they are cute just as I KNOW they get old FAST!!! I bought those for my son and he wore them only a few times within ONE week! To say the least, my hubby got mad and tossed them out as chew toys for my mom's doggie!!! Wah. My son thought it was funny. I guess he didn't like them either.

Go for similar cute styles but without the squeeky-thingy inside 'em.

I had a pair for my son - my mom thought they would be a cute gift. They got old really fast. If you get them, and if you do get tired of them before they outgrow them, just put a drop of glue in the squeaker hole and they will stop squeaking.

haha, what you do for parents you really don't like -- give their kid a drum.  Remember the old I Love Lucy episode where little Ricky had a drum?  Ok, probably most of you don't but it was still funny.

Hmmm... This might explain why BOTH my mother AND my mother-in-law have gotten BOTH of my kids drum sets for their birthdays in the past. Good thing we "conveniently" left them at their house prior to moving over here...

What ever happened to parents actually keeping their children (18 months? still a baby) in sight at all times? Read several stories over the summer about kids here in Japan who fell out windows, climbed over balconies. Eric Clapton anyone? Sounds like the mothers in this story

LMAO Ok so I haven't checked this for a few days - and WOW. People really don't like these shoes! Some of the comments I'm just plain going to ignore, but people really - I wasn't asking for parenting advice, and pissing off a 7 1/2 month pregnant woman.... Not cool. There. On to better things...

Dea - I looked all over Mores City today, and couldn't find them. Not only could I not find them, I even asked (I took her squeaky mittens with me to help with the whole squeaking translations LOL). No joy. One store knew what I was talking about but didnt have any. And I love the idea of getting them just piss people off now. I'm guessing that some people who posted don't have kids, or had really quiet kids who were happy to sit in a stroller. I wish......

MerMar - I did look at the ones online tonight out of desperation, but I really love the Japanese looking ones. They are just so cute!

They aren't something that she would wear all the time, just when we go to the exchange where its hard to get a cart through most of the aisles (Really - its obnoxious!), and for going to the playground. Those are fenced, so I feel its ok to let her run around - isn't that the point of the playground???? Plus - I would rather let her run around a little bit than be a screaming mess and have people pissed at that - I personally find screaming kids more annoying than squeaking shoes. I guess I'm not over the snarky comments after all....... lol. Gonna go eat so chocolate and calm down

Oh and about the chairs - LOVE THEM! We got one for her, it makes it fun for her to sit in a chair. She does bounce in it to make it squeak, thinks its hilarious. I'm sure the shoes would actually make her stand/sit still, since she would be trying to figure out how they work hahahaha.

Oh - Dea - she wears size 5 (I think thats 15 or 16 in Japanese sizes ). I honestly want a pair for my nephew as well, who is just learning to walk (those are more for the annoy my sister category however), so if you do find them, PLEASE let me know where!!!!!

And Favorite Princess - Thank you for saying that, I know I'm not the only parent who lets their kid move around in public.

I just checked SOFA regulations and there are some rules against buying squeaky shoes off base and bringing them on base. You can get in a lot of trouble for this causing political trouble throughout the Pacific Fleet so you REALLY ought to reconsider.

All four of my kids got them from Grandma (Japanese) over the years and all of them were repaired quickly to silence the squeek.
In my opinion they are a product of the anti-christ and should have never been made or allowed near children.
I often thought about why people do things that would obviously annoy others.
The squeek may be cute and not bother mom but it's like nails on a chalk board that never stops to everyone else.
I got it... next time I hear those shoes I should go up to mom or whoever the responsible person is and cut the cheese right in their face. After all, it doesn't bother me. To me the expression on their face at that point would be cute.

Squeaky shoes are very common here in Japan. I personally like that (I don't have kids), but even in Japan, its discussing for kids to wear them in public places.

Anyway to whom like that and want to see the pictures, this is one example of such shoes.

    http://item.rakuten.co.jp/shoes-mat.../anpan448/
(Scroll down to see the product pictures... Boots displayed in the top part of page are AD.)

The formal name of this kind of shoes is: "Fuigo Kutsu", but it may not work at stores in most cases, because I haven't known this word until 5 minutes ago... (I googled to find the answer...)

Usually, they are called "KYU-U KYU-U SAN-DA-LU" or "PI-CO PI-CO SAN-DA-RU" ("KYU-U KYU-U" and "PI-CO PI-CO" are onomatopee words. "Onomatopee" is a grammer word. I don't know if usually American know the word... A frequent use of onomatopee is one of the significant aspect of Japanese language. Both describe the sound of these kind of shoes. "SAN-DA-LU" is the transliteration of "sandal". Most of these "SAN-DA-LU" are really shoes, but called sandal by unknown reason.)

The other way to call it is "FUE TSUKI SAN-DA-LU" ("FUE" means whistle. "TSUKI" is "with something")

Okumura, thanks for the pictures and the information. I do know what onomatopoeia is, but then again I'm a linguist, so I can't speak for other Americans. LOL. I had read that Japanese uses these often. It will be interesting to learn more about that.

So, do these squeaky shoes come in all sizes, or just for little kids. I'm curious as to whether or not they're popular among 10 year olds, for example.

Awesome website - Now I just need to get someone who can read kanjii to help me order them LMAO. Those are exactly what I was looking for!

I will try writing those words down and taking them with me to a couple more stores, and see if I can find them in town as well.

    Deamarie,

It doesn't piss ME off. I am just giving my honest personal experience input. I sincerely liked them, but well... they aren't convenient all the time. Some places are just not a good idea to take them. It's kinda like when some people wear those really strong potent cheap "stinky" perfumes you can get at Walgreens or some place like that and they seem to wear half the bottle and then go to a conference where you end up having to sit next to them. Worse even when it's someone you know or who is accompanying you so then you're forced to hold back the watering eyes and the headaches the perfume cause. Lol!!!

I just think better about things like that. If it's something that I can control (like choosing not to put my toddler in noisy shoes or wearing half a bottle of cheap perfume) then I think I'd rather know I'm doing a public service. Hee, hee, hee. ... by opting not to.

Don't let this irritate you. I know what you mean, though. Being pregnant some things seem more irritating than others---especially things dealing with little kids and babies.

ThaiGuy: HAHAHAHAHA!!! I just told him and he's like... "yeah!!!" Crazies! Thing with those shoes is that it caused an argument at that point (a little one though) and later on I realized I should have just let my son wear them when I was home alone with him or playing outside. I should have been more considerate. Turns out my dad wanted to give the shoes to my mom's doggie way before my husband actually did! Lol!!! You men! Ha, ha, ha!

jupiterinka, I'm not 100% sure, but they are usually only for kids under 2 or 3 years old.
Possibly sizes may exist for 4 or 5 years (ages before going to elementary school), but they aren't popular for 10 years old...

The next "gotta have it" sensation: Squeaky Doggie Shoes. What a concept!  Twice the squeaks and double the fun.  Who's in? We can get rich off this thing.

    *laughs* Loved the comments.

I think the ones in the videos are annoying. The ones I have for my daughter aren't that bad. Granted she doesn't walk very well yet. It still surprises her and she tries to figure out how to do it again. HAHAHA!

I think maybe wearing them outside, okay. Inside, no.

My request is please don't let your kids wear light up shoes in the movie theather. I HATE THAT! It's soooo annoying! Or better yet, don't let your kids wear roller shoes in the store. I've been almost ran over so many times!

And, I really want a squeaky chair...where did you get those?
To enjoy Japan you gotta go out and experience it! Need a buddy, msg me!

Wait, wait, wait, you're complaining about other kid's shoes when your kid wears annoying shoes too? That cancels out your vote, you get no say!

My kid wears those annoying squeaky shoes, but I really hate it when other kids wear shoes that annoy me. Do you have any idea how that sounds? I, personally, don't see how light up shoes or skate shoes can compare. I will give you that light up shoes can be a problem in a theater, but that is one place. The squeaky shoes are annoying everywhere. The constant noise is enough to drive anyone insane.

    Ditto the above.

This statement is inherently false: "The ones I have for my daughter aren't that bad."

EVERY clueless parent thinks "they aren't that bad" while everyone around is silently wishing for an alien abduction to whisk away the entire annoying family.

Here's a clue: THEY ARE THAT BAD!!!!! LOSE THE SHOES!!!
