Wow, it is posts like these that make me wonder why some people come out here at all. I am going to do what momma always told me and keep my mouth shut, since I probably can't say anything nice about this thread.

Good question. I know the Apple store in Tokyo has had them for a long time already. NEX seems to want to dump the old iPads before they start selling the new ones. Hence the price cut on the old ones.

People have posted before that they are first in line for some special doo-dad, and dash in the moment the doors open, and get to the counter & it's already sold out! Let us know what happens with the iPads.

Last week I went to the NEX food court for breakfast and was surprised to see that the American Grill was closed and had a sign that said it was "due to staffing problems". Dunkin' Donuts was being run by a few older gentlemen who looked like they were more used to being in the office but were trying their best to serve everyone. I kinda wondered what was going on. It was the day of the earthquake drill so someone suggested that a lot of people stayed home to avoid the hub-bub but I'm kinda doubting that. Anyone have any news on this?

Polly~and this is why I am glad to be living in Ikego, LOL
the bottom line is that what is going on at the Nex is plain WRONG regardless of the color of your skin...I came over here with my husband to keep our family together and support my husband. I should not have to go on a wild goose chase to purchase said items online and pay twice or three times the amount just because an employee is taking advantage of the situation.

I looked at the iPad 2 today in the NEX. They have both the WiFi only as well as the 3G.
The prices are almost exactly the same as what you can get online.

I'm pretty sure they're talking about the first gen iPads that are gonna be on sale for the Anniversary sale. iPad 2 will still be the same price if I'm remembering correctly.

wow... I have to agree though. This is by far the WORST NEX I've had the "pleasure" of shopping at. I despise shopping at the NEX, Home Accents, Kids NEXdoor, etc. I have never seen such rudeness. It baffles me why people would choose to work in a retail/customer service job and be so unpleasant/rude! If you don't like your job, QUIT!

On another note: Since I'm been in Yokosuka I've beenwaiting to buy a Dyson from the Home Accents. The one I want has been out of stock for 5 months. I have called/stopped in to ask when it is expected to be back in stock. Noone knows! How do companies do business when they supposedly "don't know what will be on their truck for delivery", as I've been told. I get different answers on when they get deliveries... some days the person says Tuesday & Thursday. Other days the person will say Wednesday & Friday. WOW! If something is out of stock, reorder it! Am I missing something here???

mollie_mckenzie, if you've waited five months, then it sounds like time isn't really a factor for you. While you shouldn't have to wait five months for something (I avoid shopping for anything at the NEX), here are some workarounds for you. If you absolutely have to buy it through the NEX, just special order it through customer service. Or you can order it from the NEX online. They do sell Dysons online and ship to FPO addresses for the same prices that you would pay at the store. Lastly, the AAFES up in Yokota had all kinds of Dysons this weekend. Since the Exchange services do talk to each other, maybe you can have customer service get one from there or Camp Zama for you. Even better, take a family trip up to Yokota and the Tama Zoo. That way, you can buy the vacuum that you want and have a fun family trip. Yokota's base services put ours to shame and the Tama Zoo that is up there was a blast.

Today at the NEX as I went up to a cash register to pay for something, I noticeably disturbed the lady who had to ring me up. She slammed down the magazine she was reading, rang up my purchase without saying a word, and then as I walked off, grabbed her magazine and went back to whatever article she was in the middle of. It was if I was bothering her by needing to pay for my items.

@felinious---It's not the getting it isn't a factor for me, it's the point that apparently the people working in the Home Accent store have no clue and are flat out rude! Thanks for the heads up though... I might just travel up to Yokota with the family this weekend!

@amauldin---That is exactly the crap I'm talking about! I feel better though that it's not just me that this is happening too!

I've never had anyone there to be rude to me. They all seem quite friendly. I do feel we get the "vague, run-around" when asking when something will come in etc...

To give a little clarity to those who have never worked retail, you never exactly know when something is coming in. You get deliveries almost everyday, but you don't know what has been ordered. I worked for several larger retailers in the states and we never knew what products were coming in on the truck that day. And as for the NEX workers being rude, I have to say that some of you have forgotten what its like to be in the states. Everyone has always seemed very pleasant and helpful, I have never once been treated like I was bothering someone. Also, we are overseas! Things are not as easily attainable as they are in the states. Though I miss some of the luxuries of the good ol' US, I think we are very fortunate to have the ability to purchase at least most of the brands we are accustomed too.

herdgrl, that you for interjecting that note of rationality into the conversation. Yes, we're overseas. We're far from the supply lines and little niceties that we take for granted in the States. Get over it, everyone! You're in freakin' Japan!! Love it, enjoy it, consider yourself blessed & don't moan that your favorite yogurt or designer coffee is out of stock. For heavens sake, how many conversations have we seen that your mutt's favorite dog food is out of stock? There are millions of dogs in Japan. They all eat something; your dog will get by just fine.

I keep wondering why I don't feel any sense of hardship despite our tiny Iwakuni commissary, a 59-sq-meter apartment and no bed (my wife & I have been sleeping on the floor for 28 months now, perfectly comfortable.) I think it was the 2 years I spent in Thailand on independent duty (not DOD-related.) No commissary, no FPO, no Exchange, no ITT or English-speaking barber. How did I survive? I went native and found out that millions of Thai get by just fine without American conveniences and so could I.

There has been so much whining lately on JB lately, sorry I'm mostly going off about that. No hot food at Autoport!? Holy moley, what is we gonna do, Archie? How's this... wake up 15 minutes early and make yourself some eggs & toast. We don't even have an Autoport in Iwakuni, and our '50s-era gas station most certainly does not have fast food. Ever. Yet somehow we survive.

People gotta take a chill pill and get over the little things. Look at it this way... someone in your family (probably not you) gets a regular pay check, twice a month. There is 100% employment in your community. That puts you light-years ahead of millions of Americans back home. Be grateful.

oh i so love what you just said thaiguy.very well said. Yah people sometimes complain so much but sometimes I wonder if they act nice to those who work at the establishments on base too. I used to work in the foodcourt and every morning I have to deal and act nice to someone that happened to have a bad morning and even though I got nothing to do with it they will be rude just because they had a bad day or morning. Or they will ask you to make them breakfast at 1300 and tell you they have 24 hours breakfast stores in the states, or that you didnt cooked his egg so well, or that we dont have good breakfast. Then maybe if your not satisfied you should cook your own egg..Commissary items are cheap. and stop comparing the states here coz were not in america. If your not happy with the people here then go back to good ol america and enjoy yourself or make a good use of your kitchens.just saying.

I just wanted to note that not all dogs can suddenly be switched from one dog food brand to another (not w/out getting the runs that is).  So, I understand perfectly why s/one would be upset if their favorite brand of dog food was out at the commissary or NEX.  I buy my dog food at Costco, and even they run out of the brand that I always buy every now and then.  Still, it's not long before they get it in again.  I usually plan ahead and don't wait until they are completely out before buying another bag.

As far as e/thing else, I mostly agree.  I'm grateful that we have all the conveniences that we do on base.  But, when I see inefficiency from one base to another, I question why that is.  Some of the complains are perfectly valid.  If people did their job the right away, we more than likely wouldn't have  all the problems that we do on this base.  Not e/thing can be helped, but a lot of it can.

Yes, I see this ethos expressed a lot on JB.  Adam is a big proponent of it, among others. The fact is, not everyone does their job perfectly, every time.  Likewise, none of us on JB are perfect in our work life/home life/relationships/etc.  That's just life!! The people around us are not automatons, put in place to serve our needs to robotic perfection each & every time.  I see such expectations expressed here often.

Nevertheless, I do pretty much agree with you.  Over time, I've just learned to be content when I encounter someone with with a good attitude, a desire to do the right thing and a willingness to help.  You might say I've lowered my standards, but perhaps it's better to say I've mellowed and am more accepting of the imperfections in those around me.  It not only helps me to stay patient at the back of a long line, but it helps in personal relationships as well. I don't expect any partner in a relationship to be perfect, and I don't expect perfection from employees either.

And btw, I don't uphold myself as a paragon of virtue. I'm constantly fighting against my natural Type-A "mission-first" temperament (I'm a retired Navy officer, if that tells you anything.) I don't lash out, but I do push people more than they like and probably more than I should. The only reason I spoke up on this topic is I've been seeing an increasing trend of intolerance and whininess (sp?) on JB.

What a breathe of fresh air you are, ThaiGuy. Thanks for the different perspective!

I think ranting is acceptable in the correct place as long as it is kept respectful and am thankful this forum doesn't go through and delete/alter all of the comments so that the info is only rainbows and butterflies. It is nice to share our experiences with each other whether they are positive or negative and to see actions taken after issues are brought up. But day after day complaining should always be followed with a suggestion to fix the problem! I wholeheartedly agree that sometimes $hi! happens and it matter most how you personally deal with it

Tiny commissary at Iwakuni? Paaalease.... go to Kure, theirs is about the size of a Connex box.

I think you are missing some of the points people are bringing up. I have lived in far worse places than Japan and had to do without some of the nicer things Americans rely on. More than a few folks seem to be dissatisfied with the level of customer service at the NEX.... myself included.

I just don't bother shopping at the NEX. Sure, I go to actually play with the electronic stuff. But I really don't buy anything from there unless I absolutely have to. School shopping lists and uniforms are at the top of that list. Everything else is a couple of clicks away on the internet. You just cant go out and do that impulse shopping thing. Is that really such a bad thing? Girls, I do feel bad for you since Japanese shops don't even have sizes for my Japanese wife. But again, do your size shopping at the NEX and get what you really want from the Internet. Just like in the States, your consumer dollar is what will drive change at any store. Including the NEX. If you don't like it that much, don't buy from there. Boycott the store and let people know why you are doing it! ICE the you-know-what out of them for every little thing that makes you not like to shop there. Encourage your friends to do the same. Change only comes when you do something to make it happen.
