    Hello everybody!

My hubby, I and our “almost” child (our dog) will be moving to Yokosuka in August 2011. I just started to read about the paperwork to bring our dog with us

I have read several links posted here and I have a question about the FAVN test:

    ·         My dog has his microchip already

    ·         If he gets his first rabies shot on Dec. 20th, then he will get his second shot around January 22nd.

    a)     Could he get his blood sample for the FAVN test on Jan. 22nd? (The same day he got his second shot) Or does he have to wait another 30 days for the blood work?

         b)    When does his quarantine date start? On the date he got his blood drown for the FAVN test or on the date when we get the results back from the lab?

    c)
Are there 2 approved Kansas State University Rabies Lab? Where did you send your blood sample?

    There are two different addresses:

Kansas State University Rabies Lab. (I found this address on the usarj.army.mil website)

    1800 Deninson Ave.

    Manhattan, KS 66506

Kansas State University Rabies Lab. (I found this address on the vet.ksu.edu website)

    2005 Research Park Circle

    Manhattan, KS 66502

    Thanks a lot!!

    A)  Third Step states that "blood sampling must be done on and after the date of second vaccination."  So, yes, you can get the FAVN test done on the 22nd.

    B)  Starts the day of the FAVN sampling - 180 day wait from that date.

    C)  I'm pretty sure we sent ours to the one on Park Circle.

Also the thing is there is no quarintine place that they will send your dog. The quarintine is that your pet can not leave base until those 180days are up. Yokosuka has a wating list for on base housing. Which means your dog will have to stay in the kennel and you will have to pay for it. I hear the base kennel where your dog wil have to stay is not so great.

And just to be clear, if you get the test 181days out or 185+days out the test becomes invalid. It must be done again.Which means your dog can not leave base until the 180days are up.I say this only to make sure as I know of an issuse that has happed recently with someone who came to the husbands command.

Oh and for my cats FAWN test the vet sent it out for me for an extra $5.00. As far as the blood draw date I belive it is the date that the blood is taken. Ill ask tommarow at the vet as I have to take my cats anyways.

If you know someone here with a townhouse (or if your sponsor knows someone with a townhouse), you can "home quarantine" your dog at their house. I agree, the kennels are horrible. Very small cages, even for large dogs, and just gross. I'm sure there is someone on here who would also help you out

However - if your dog HAS to be quarantined, and they make you do that at the kennel, those charges are reimbursable through the travel office (on the third floor of PSD, down the long hallway to the left of the stairs).

    A) Third Step states that "blood sampling must be done on and after the date of second vaccination"

So, I get his first blook drown ON the same day he gets his second rabies shot, and how long do I have to wait to get his second blood drown AFTER the shot?
    ----------------------------------------------------------

Will the FAVN results be sent to me or to my vet? In average, how long did you have to wait to have the results back?

Thanks again!!!...Easy (my dog) will have his first shot tomorrow

No, you do the FAVN sampling only once.  I understand your confusion because the writing isn't the best from that quote.  It makes it sound like you need two samplings.

You get the first rabies shot.  Wait at least 32 days, then get second rabies shot.  On the day of the second rabies shot, you can get your FAVN sampling.

Your vet can send the paperwork for you or they may ask you to do it yourself.  I think we had to do it ourselves.  If you use an on base vet, then they will probably mail the paperwork for you.   We got the results back in about 30 - 45 days....but, my memory is a little fuzzy on that one.

I know it all seems like so much work and so confusing.  Just imagine trying to do it without the help of this website!  I had to do all the research on my own and pull information from several different locations when I went through the whole process.  It was all so overwhelming.

We just arrived in yoko as well, and got housing in Negishi. It is a commute everyday, but very pet friendly. Also I noticed your picture of your baby... I would looking into the airlines embargo on flying of snubbed nose dogs at certain times of the year. I have flown back and forth from the states a few times with our dogs, and the biggest trouble I have had was with the airlines.

If I remeber correctly the results were sent to my Vet and it took about 6 weeks and they called me to come pick them up. I didnt use an on base vet but the vet I went to in Sandiego actually had done this sending pets to Japan a few times. So they were my biggest help. Only problem I had was with the raised USDA seal. I remember fliping out about it in frount of some people..........and then someone told me how and it was really easy. For the life of me I dont remember what I had to do to get it now!

We will start with his first rabies shot tomorrow (hopefully).

The fact that Easy is a short-nose dog is one of my biggest worries, because we may have to leave around July and I know airlines do not accept dogs as cargo if the weather reaches 85 F ...no idea what we are going to do

Thank you guys for your answers

Have your husband check with who is issuing your tickets see if they will let you and the dog come sooner. Or try to go to http://www.freewebs.com/campcanine/. This lady runs her own kennel in Okinawa the rules are the same for main land as they are for Okinawa. You might want to ask her which airlines will ship your baby with out you come september ect. Then you just have to find someone who is willing to watch your dog and put them on a flight to you. There are also things like http://www.happytailstravel.com/ that is a shipping service. I met someone who had to ship a great dane through these guys. She said it was almost $5000.00. But her dog is much much bigger than yours. She didnt have any complaints but I havent used them pesronally so I dont know.

Or very last restore see if they will allowe you to come after him. And make the date for a cooler month. In the mean time while he is here he can set up house and get a car. And if you want  base housing and there is a 3month waiting list your pup doesnt have to stay in the kennels for that time. Your husband can do the orientation and be put on the list so really no waiting in a grimy kennel for your baby.

Go to an on base vet. The microchip is around $25 and the FAVN test is $50. I got to the onbase vet too late and had to pay $75 for the chip from civiian vet. Also they will take care of a lot of the paperwork involved and they already know the rules. Here is a good link http://www.usarj.army.mil/organizat...t/prm2.pdf

It is a lot of work and can get frustrating. I am just starting and I am feeling the pressure.
