BZ: As members of a public service organization, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., living in Japan and not speaking the language makes reaching out to the community a great deal more challenging. So when we set out to plan a visit to one of the local orphanages we were disheartened at how difficult it was to simply make contact, let alone to plan and implement a visit. That’s why I would like to offer a special thanks to Yuko Hasegawa, Chief Fire Inspector at the CNFJ Regional Fire Department. Hasegawa was not just instrumental, but pivotal in organizing a visit to the Syunkou Gakuen Orphanage March 29 for the young ladies in the Delta GEMS and Delta Academy mentoring program. She even went a step further volunteering to come with us to the orphanage to assist with translation. The 38 youths and volunteers who went had a rewarding and unforgettable experience and we owe a large portion of that to Hasegawa.
