We decorated the house for Halloween this weekend... one of my sons said I couldn't hang the skeleton outside because he overheard some teachers saying that skeletons were extremely offensive to the Japanese and Filipinos.  We live off base- have I offended my neighbors by hanging skeletons and ghouls outside the house?  I certainly don't want to cause and international incident!

I see skeleton things all over the place in Japanese stores, especially the skull & crossbones thing. You even see Hello Kitty in a skull and crossbones design! I saw skeleton type Halloween decorations the other day at the 100 Yen shop. So, unless someone knows something more, I'd say it's probably not true.

I think that being said about the Japanese is completely false, just look at the skeleton stuff they sell at Y100 store for Halloween and the stuff mentioned above.

And if it was a big deal I think the base would have already sent out rules and regulations on decorations since they try to make everyone happy. I mean, the kids wear stuff with skulls and skeletons on their clothes all the time to school.

I didn't really believe him and hung it up anyway. But it got me curious and figured I'd ask here.

Japanese....."and Filipinos"?? this is a US base in Japan, how does what Filipinos like or dont like figure into this? If we find Filipinos actually DONT like skeletons, do we go out and cancel Halloween now? Then what if some other group doesn't like Santa Claus- is he next on the chopping block? Just wondering.......

Blacklabel, I agree. The nationality shouldn't have anything to do with it. I don't think japanese are offended.

You have to remember, you will NEVER please everyone! Someone will always have something to say, and disagree with what you did or what you say.

I saw skeletons all over doors the last few years. First time I had ever heard something like this.
