Q: I am completely in support of the dress code standards. My question is who enforces it? I still see a great deal of people in “questionable” compliance with these standards. Who stops them? Who should we contact to report these violations?

A: In short it’s everyone’s responsibility as naval leaders or as responsible members of our community to enforce the CNFJ dress code. You can also report violations that you observe to Security at 243-5000.

I don't know much about the dress code. But when the NEX starts putting out the summer clothes, they put little signs on the clothing racks stating whether or not it is appropriate to wear in certain areas.

Yes, go here: Policy Page on CFAY, then click on the " COMNAVFORJAPAN Civilian Clothes Regulation/Policy". You may have to log in, though. It's a .pdf file.

Pretty much, don't wear anything too short or showing too much skin. I've seen girls returning from the Honch getting the shake down because their dresses were way too short.

Then don't wear anything with holes, or frayed jeans (this goes with them being too long). I have both and they've been retired until I return stateside because they won't let me leave base with them on (I liked to take the razor to my clothes ).

And of course nothing offensive, glamourizing drugs and liquor, and then don't look dirty. Yadda yadda. You might get away with it a couple times but you'll get caught eventually.

EDIT: And just to add before anyone cries, rules are "strict" because you're representatives of our country in this host country. They want you to cover up and look nice, girls and boys.

It's WAY out of hand the number of people I have to correct in the honch while on watch. Biggest problem? Young men sagging their jeans.

Meh... I've seen people in ridiculous outfits that somehow fit within the clothing regs, yet I can't wear a white t-shirt. That one's always irritated the daylights out of me. Not enough to give it a second thought, though.

I'm not too sure about the tank tops, but I know a lot of the girls will wear the strappy summer dresses and it's fine as long as they're a respectable length. I think if your bra and bits aren't hanging out it should be cool. Perhaps stay away from spaghetti straps?

I do know you won't see very many low cut items on the Japanese girls, but they have no problem with showing leg. But prepared to be stared at since American girls are a little chestier that our Asian sisters.

Dude, this is a thread about base rules for Yokosuka, a Naval base. If someone can't deal with simple rules like not wearing holey jeans, then this is not the place for them. Why do people not understand that there are rules when you live on a Military base? Don't like them, don't come on a base, live out in town, get out of the service, etc etc.

Go drink some Jeremiah Weed and chill about the rules, man.

Lol, I was answering questions for people that asked, not cowering behind somebody else, silly.

I know my place, and I'll let the people with the authority handle it. I won't go out of my way to be an a**hole like you're suggesting, but I will go out of my way to answer questions on this forum if it's within my knowledge.

Now quit whining and follow the rules.

And I'll take my own advice, and quit being off topic.

Speaking about clothes... I concur with a few of the people here... there's some dirty ass people on this base. I mean, DIRTY, as in smelly... full of grease, not washed... clothing.

And then there's some people (females mostly), that might as well work as prostitutes when going out. Sorry to the ones that don't, but seriously... to the ones that do use those clothes, don't dress up like a whore if that's what you are going to be called afterward. Yea, you look good... for a hooker.

And dudes... "you lookin' like a fool with yo' pants on the ground!!!"

I think the enforcement of the dress code on this base comes down to whomever has a chip on their shoulder that day. I've seen lots of PT gear in the commissary but heaven forbid you wear a pair of flip flops in the summer.

Do you ever get into the Tokyo area?
God I hope not, you man not survive past the train station

Japanese fashion is such that it pretty violates every single dress code you can think of
you are in japan, its part of the culture. Japanese fashion is mimicked world wide cause of it's awesomeness

to say it is innapropriate due to your overly protective morals, standards or whatever you go by doesn't mean it's right or wrong for you to do so. But to degrade one of the things that makes japan unique because you done approve is kinda prudish

And of you don't like it, go home. You came here voluntarilly

FL- We aren't TALKING about Japanese fashion in Shibuya and Harajuku. We are talking about people on base who don't wear appropriate clothing to represent our country in Japan.

Boobs hanging out IS innappropriate, no matter what your standards are. Children shouldn't have to see that, they ARE children after all. You wouldn't let a 6 or 8 year old into a strip club, would you? If you would, you are sad. It's the same thing out on the streets. And how does it hurt to wear slightly more clothing so you are acceptable in society??

I never said I don't like Japanese fashion. But boobs hanging out is NOT fashion.

Looks like I missed the fireworks. after sorting through the bombardment of emails, I do have to agree with FLS on A FEW points, even though he didn't clearly state them. Yes, we're in Japan. Yes, we're expected to be model citizens... actually, more than model citizens. Just from my interpretation, we're all supposed to be humanitarians that build sandcastles with little Japanese children, Help old Japanese people cross the street, etc. I just get confused when it comes to the civilian clothes policy.... there are some things that are perfectly fine otherwise, that are outlawed here. Just feels like the khaki pants/polo shirt mafia trying to flex some muscle and assimilate everyone. I would say that out of everything that's been mentioned here, the only thing i see that irritates me is the sagging pants. And you know who I see doing it 100% of the time? Civilians and dependents. Yup. It's true. And as far as trashy women... go stand in the honch on a friday or saturday night, outside of Geodana's and/or Club U.S. and look at the Japanese women that strut around there. I swear it's like going to the circus. Come to think of it, not much different in Roppongi, either. And can someone PLEASE explain to me what's wrong with wearing a tank top or flip flops when it's burning hot outside? I'm dying to know what's so wrong with it.

I"m annoyed that the answer was ...

In short it’s everyone’s responsibility as naval leaders or as responsible members of our community to enforce the CNFJ dress code. You can also report violations that you observe to Security at 243-5000.

I swear the guys at the main gate pick on the fat people vs the "good looking people". And yes I'm a fluffy girl :p

I think people should dress tastefully. That means I shouldn't see undergarments (a white T-shirt is considered an undergarment. heck it used to be part of your uniform!), pants should be around the waist, skirts should cover your bum when you bend over, shoes should be for walking not for the shower and private parts of the body should be kept private. Oh and those of you who think Yoga pants are for public use, they aren't, especially if they are tight. EWWW!

And during the summer, I think tank tops are fine, but please cover your bra straps and men hide your pit hair.

Oh and you can wear sandals as long as they aren't shower shoes. So pretty much don't wear plastic, no frill flip flops. But ones that have beads or decorative or leather are fine. Or at least I've never had security tell me I can't.

    >
    >>
    >

And FLS, it's a good thing she is protecting her kids. She has a right to raise her children conservatively. I think it's awful that people express themselves in a R-rated manner around children, that goes for the spoken language too.

It's not being overprotective, it's raising them with good values. Jenn you're a good mom! Good for you!
To enjoy Japan you gotta go out and experience it! Need a buddy, msg me!

Wow. I was stationed in Misawa and there wasn't a dress code, other than no earrings on men.

And off base, some of the Japanese women wore jeans with holes and extremely provocative clothes. I figured since this base is closer to Tokyo, it would be more extreme. I'm glad I read this thread before going over there.

FYI, they were stopping people going into the main gate today for dress code violations. I mean they weren't punishing people or anything, just telling them things like, "Can't wear spaghetti straps." or "Shorts are too short."

I got told my shorts were too short. Now I know. They do cover me appropriately, the guy called it "border line." I suppose jeans, pants, leggings, or capris might be a safer base choice in the future.

The positive side of all this is that I've got some shopping ahead to look forward to when we get to Japan. I have so many spaghetti strap shirts & shirts with too low of a front (I can't help how the cute stuff is made in the U.S.)! I don't know what I'll wear when we first get to Japan! LOL. I must have a few things that are okay...most of it might be borderline. Good thing I want to live off base, though! I'll just try to blend in with the Japanese styles (well, some of them).

I must admit that I agree with KeithJ & some of the others about this issue. I think that we should dress to avoid being offensive to the Japanese people & to look respectable in order to represent our country, but maybe the civilian dress code goes a little too far. As for showing a little cleavage (not too much), I don't personally mind, but since that is taboo in Japan, I will follow that code. That said, I am a mother of young children whom I want to protect, but I believe that part of our body is natural and made for nourishing our young (I've breastfed both my kids); it's primary purpose isn't sexual! Still, showing too much (in my opinion) is distasteful. Just my hippie opinion. LOL.

Wow, I was never sure about the spaghetti straps because it was never clearly spelled out. I figured if your bra wasn't showing it'd be okay. Meh.

I don't have a problem with a little cleavage (because hey, we've got them and I know the shopping scene) --but every time I show just a little in my lower cut tops/dresses I get a lot of unwanted attention (even after trying to cover up with cami or scarf). Usually embarrassed giggles from the younger guys and down right oogled from older men. I'm not a skinny young thing but it still happens. A lot. So if you can't handle it I'd suggest a change in your wardrobe, I guess.

Enh. I think the guy was just warming up for the summer. It was nasty humid today. And the dress code thing seems discretionary....especially for borderline issues. Maybe there was an exposed bra I'm not aware of...

This is s/thing that drives me crazy about this base. I've never been to a base that has so many rules. I find it ironic that we are a country that fights for freedom and individual liberties, yet we aren't even given the basic fundamental right of expression to dress how we please. I understand that we must leave a good impression with our host country, but when I see young, Japanese girls off base dress way more productively than the young girls on base, I question whether the base officials have gone too far. I couldn't tell you how many Japanese girls I saw today wearing tiny, little booty shorts that barely covered their butts. And, this wasn't in some trendy area like Shibuya. It was just off base in Mikasa Park. Not only did a see these girls wear short shorts, but they also had extremely short skirts that barely covered their bottoms. Now, personally find it distasteful to wear s/thing that short, but hey, it's the fashion here! I don't understand how s/one can tell a girl getting ready to go to Sunday church that she shouldn't wear her dress with spaghetti straps off base. I think they take their dress code too far on this base. I don't like to watch young teenage boys (or men) run around with their drawers hanging out, but if they have a belt on and it's all covered up, then who am I to knock their fashion. We are a country that stands for the principles of basic freedom and rights among man and woman, yet, for some reason, this base thinks that we are undeserving of those basic rights. How is that right?

Well said, Yoko-girl. I love your post about having rights! Why does it seem that those who fight for our freedom (and their "dependents") have the least amount of freedom in our country?! I do think there need to be boundaries, but from the sound of it, the Yokosuka base takes things too far.

I just did a google image search to see the kind of short skirts & shorts the Japanese women are wearing. I don't mind the short shorts so much (I'm more comfortable wearing them myself because they don't really show underwear if you bend over), but some of the skirts are way too short. My 9 year old said it's inappropriate. LOL. I'd hate to wear something that could show off my underwear like that.....my mini skirt isn't THAT short! It kind of bugs me, though, that Japanese women are free to go around wearing this stuff and catch our husbands' attention, but we American women aren't allowed to dress up in similar ways!!!!! No wonder the men are interested in Japanese women! They get offered plenty of eye candy!
