This one's a little offbeat... but, it IS something that's gotten on my nerves my entire time in the military. I hate when I'm out and about, and I see someone wearing their uniform items in their civilian clothes, i.e. PT shirt/jeans, work boots(and it's even worse when the boots are all chewed up), eisenhower jacket, etc. I was an E-1 at one time, and yes, I remember those paychecks, so I can see that argument coming, but I'm pretty sure I had clothes to wear in high school that didn't just magically disappear once I joined the Navy. Am I just completely out to lunch with this or does anyone else share my annoyance with this?

These "people" are called NUB's, they no longer have mommy to put out their cloths so they put on what uncle sam has for them. I would be willing to bet most of them are single too lol. Damn dirty NUB's.

If you want to walk around wearing something that screams "I'm in the Navy and have no desire to make myself presentable to the civilized world" go for it. Provided those items are authorized for wear in civvies I couldn't care less.

Saw someone in VA wearing a peacoat with a rating badge once, made them take it off. It was about 25 degrees.

I was that a-hole. And at times I miss being that a-hole. ;-)

There is 2 ways to look at this situation.

    1. Is the uniform item they are wearing authorized to be worn while in civilian clothes? This is straight out of the Uniform Regs:

WEARING UNIFORM ARTICLES WITH CIVILIAN CLOTHES.
Military personnel may wear the military uniform articles listed below with civilian clothing:

    All-Weather Coat/Raincoat (w/o insignia)
    Belts with civilian buckles
    Cap, Knit Watch
    Command/Navy Ball Cap (w/o insignia)
    Gloves
    Handbag
    Jacket, Black (w/o insignia)
    Jacket, Khaki Windbreaker (w/o insignia)
    Necktie, Four-in-Hand
    Peacoat (w/o insignia)
    Shoes
    Socks/Hosiery
    Sweater, Pullover Jersey
Sweater, Black V-Neck Pullover (w/o nametag)
    Underwear

Granted, it doesnt have the new PT shirt on this list, and I assume this should be on the list. So, this list might not be 100% up to date. However, if its on this list, it is allowed to be worn out in town.

    2. The other way to look at it is from the point of view you are looking at it from. Personally, I agree with you. My pet peeve is one that you mentioned, and thats people wearing some jacked up uniform boots. Even if you are an E1, you cant tell me you cant even afford to go buy a $50 pair of sneakers from the NEX. If you cant, then maybe you oughta be scheduling an appt with your Command Financial Specialist ASAP.

The bottom line is all you can do is shake your head whenever you see someone wearing one of the items from the list above. And, if someone is wearing a uniform item that is NOT on the list above, then it is our duty to correct this wayward soul, and get them back on the correct path...

I have to point out the $350.00 pea coat I bought my husband at Macys 7 years ago. The only differnce between the uniform coat and the one at Macy's was the color. Really the color is only a shade off too, I bet he could get away with wearing it with his uniform. I didnt realize it when I bought it that it was almost an exact repiclica. He needed a new coat that he could dress up or dress down, something that was classic and still fashionable. So I would be careful of the pea coats. There isnt much you can do to make a pea coat look differnt either the heavy wool and cut are what make it a pea coat. Although I am going to buy him one in a lighter color next time so its obvious its not his uniform jacket.

The pea coat by itself is fine to wear. If he puts the rating badge on it then he's crossed into the "not authorized" zone.

I'd almsot be willing to bet the buttons are different on the Macy's version as well. :-)

Not to hijack the thread, but what about the jacket line from CAVI with US military rank and insignia on them? Do you think our military personnel should be allowed to wear something like this?

I've seen those. I think they're tacky as hell. But, just like with anything else, it's what the person chooses to wear, even if it's not always in the best taste.

At least you knew to stop being that A-hole. There's no shortage of retirees that can't seem to remember that they're not in the military anymore. But, that's a topic for another thread.

Actually Rasha I have that Jacket in hot pink, plack and army green from express(bought them like 5years ago). They dont have the stuff on the end of the sleeves though. But everything eles looks the same. =( So great now I have to go take all my punk patches off my green one so no one thinks its the same jacket. I think its only the patch color combined with the jacket color that makes them look tacky. They cut of them is nice and I like my hair short so I like high collars....

How do military people feel about civilians wearing military clothing as part of their everyday clothes?

I wear boots and pant because they are very durable work clothes. Back in the US I work construction and military clothes are tough and stand up to rugged work.

Now that the Navy has done away with 'Wash Khakis", I'm thinking of wearing them as my daily ensemble. I need one of those 'Foul Weather Jackets' (Olive drab/fleece lined) for winter and of course for footwear I'll go for a pair of steel toe'd 'Boondockers". To top it off, I'll wear my "Midway Command Ballcap". Of course I'll make sure no insignia are attached.
