Second Hand Rose Thrift Shop Grandly Reopens At New Location In Yokosuka
Story and photo by Dan Bowen, CFAY Public Affairs

Shoppers check out what’s in stock at the Second Hand Rose thrift shop just after a ribbon cutting ceremony Sept. 2, officially opening the doors for business at their new location in building B39B.

The Second Hand Rose thrift shop opened its doors for business at their new location in building B39B Sept. 2. The new location is more expansive than the last and offers a full array of “upscale, resale” items whose sales benefit the entire community.

“This is the only thrift store on base and we are very excited to get up and running again,” said Second Hand Rose manager Linda King.

Many base residents were also excited about the grand opening; a line of eager shoppers lined the hall waiting for the ribbon to be cut officially opening the store for business. For many families, especially those who are about to transfer from the area, the store is a perfect place to unload some of the things they may not need back home but that another family on the base may be happy to find.

“This is a place where the average family, any family on base, can come into our store and purchase at a very reasonable cost gently used items that have been donated from other families,” said Yokosuka Officers’ Spouses’ Club (YOSC) President Amy Devore.

The Second Hand Rose shop accepts a variety of donations from residents, including kitchen products, dishes, clothes, books, small furniture and toys. In addition to the deals it provides its customers, Second Hand Rose has a long history of giving back. Originally called The White Elephant, the store has been providing base charities, school and family member scholarships to residents for more than 50 years.

“Basically, all of the funds that we make from the store go back into the community,” said King. “Since 2006, YOSC has given $223,265 back to the community. Scholarships accounted for $67,266 of that and $155,999 was given as community charitable donations.”

The store is open every Tuesday and Thursday, as well as the second Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and welcomes donations during those hours. As the new location is located in an office building, the store will no longer be able to accommodate after-hour contributions. Additionally, the store cannot accept large furniture, bulk items or electronics, however, a community board is provided for customers to post goods for sale.

For more information about Second Hand Rose or to find out more about YOSC, contact the organization by e-mail to yosc2010@yahoo.com.

Also, interested individuals may pick up applications to register to become members of YOSC at the entrance to the Officer’s Club.
