I was wondering how far is Negishi heigts from Yokosuka? I am afraid that when we get to yokosuka we might be offered the first available housing in Negishi. I am not even sure if it is the same place or two different places. I am only new to this
Another question I had was am I suppose to wait until our check-out date from our current command to call yokosuka to get on the housing wait list? And what is the wait list like? I am assuming that since we only have one child then we are only entitled to a 2 bdrm, right?

Negishi is 45-50mins. from Yoko with no traffic on main road (route 16) if you take the toll road which is about $15 r/t it's 35-40mins.

What determines your rooms will be the rank. We have a 2 bedroom plus maids room and we have 1 child. You are going to hear complaints about how the drive sucks, and how they would rather live in Yoko, but chances are if you only have 1 child and no pets you'll get a tower and personally they aren't worth living on main base to me. Negishi is a small community where everyone knows eachother, you feel safe and your kids can play around the community and not have to worry. The yards are comfortable, you have a decent size storage shed, we have everything main base has without getting lost in the bunch.

    GL on your decision.

I'm no expert, but doesn't family size also enter into the equation of how big a place you're offered? It's not just based on rank, is it? In response to the OP: Negishi & Negishi Heights are one and the same; it's not 2 different places.

They tried to offer us Negishi and we turned it down. We stayed in the lodge for about two weeks and housing offered Ikego to us. Which we took and love it out here. Originally we wanted to stay in Yoko but were told it would be a 4 month wait!

As for the amount of rooms. You will probably get a 2 or 3 bedroom. I have a friend who came here as a e3 or e4 with only 1 child and still got a 3 bedroom appt! So ya never know, you might get lucky

I have lived in negishi for three years and absolutely love it! It is all personal preference. if you are wanting convenience the most the Yoko is best, but Negishi is so much more quiet, and the commute isnt all that bad once you get used to it. It take usually close to an hour when you just go on the main route, but you can cut it down to 25-30 minutes if you take the toll road. Yoko is way too busy for me, if you have a family I would say go with Negishi or Ikego. Ikego is really nice and quiet also.

I was wondering the same thing as Valerine. We have a dog and were told Negishi would be the best place. I was wondering if anyone uses the HometoWork transit bus? My husband and I aren't there yet, but he's heard about it and that it is free.

It is free.. my husband used it every morning to get to work.. he actually really liked it because he would get on and then nap until he got to base.

The backyards in Negishi are large and perfect for dogs.. we had a VERY large dog and although I was unhappy living in Negishi at first (because of the distance from Yokosuka and my friends) I quickly learned to appreciate all the great things about living on the outskirts of Yokohama. For example, if you go out in downtown Yokohama and stay out later than expected you can easily take a cab from there to home for approx 3,500 Yen... you definitely can not do that if you live in Yokosuka or Ikego. Also, I did not have any wait for housing.. so no Navy Lodge for me and no Kennel time for my pup!

What great news! I hope we are so blessed to get housing that quickly. In my experience it hasn't worked out so smoothly. Thanks for the post.

Is their a commisary in Ikego?

Not a commissary, only a small mini mart. Same as Negishi. They are about the same size.

Read this post to see more about Ikego Mini Mart:
    http://www.japanbases.com/forums/af...19516.aspx

Most people do there main shopping at the Yokosuka Commissary.

Where you will enjoy living really depends on your lifestyle.  If you are planning to drive/explore Japan, Negishi is wonderful.  The houses here have much larger lawns and they are more like small homes.  The housing in Yokosuka and Ikego have much less character, but they are newer.  The commissary here is small and the only buses that run through housing are the home-to-work shuttles, so you must drive or be prepared to walk everywhere, but I like that.  I don't like the main base at all, but that's my personal taste.  If you have no desire to get out into Japan, base is fine because everything there is very convenient, but if you are interested in taking a quick bus ride to a professional baseball game (Go Baystars!), Chinatown, shopping, restaurants, zoo, etc. off base, then Negishi is the way to go.  One thing to consider is the age of your child and what school you want them in.  Explore a little about the schools in each housing area or the ones nearby if you plan to send them off-base.  But for what it's worth, alot of people we were in the lodge with got 2 bedrooms on the main base very quickly.  I think the wait for a 3 bedroom is much longer.  Again, I wouldn't want to be on main base though.  Just depends on how independent you are...Negishi = travel back and forth to main base for doctor appts, vet, etc. which can be a big pain if you're afraid to drive, but the quality of life out here for actually getting out and exploring the country is priceless.
