So I stopped into Chili's the other day to grab something to eat.  I noticed there was a parking spot right next to the crosswalk (closer than the handi-capable spots) that was "Reserved for E7-E9".  WTF?

There is no other reserved parking at Chili's (discounting the NEX rental spots) and it makes NO SENSE to reserve a spot for E7 to E9 without a spot for FLAG / CO / O6 / CMC.  Who painted it, who authorized it, and where is the instruction that allows a chief to have a designated parking spot somewhere other than the CPO club?

    Ranting is fun.

Well being there's a stupid parking spot for ombudman's at the NEX , I think one silly spot at chili's for us E7 and above is okay...there's always plenty for officers and ombudman's or someone else that truly don't need it....
Why not let us have this one lone spot on the base.
Stepping off the box now, LOL

I will add that handicap spots should always come before anyone else or small children parking but there's never any small children parking
the hospital has the worse parking when you see the same vehicle parked in the same spot several days in a row you knwo the person works there...why can't they park way in the back....

I think the rule is: Whoever has the stencil and a can of paint gets a reserved spot. I remember where I worked in San Diego (civilian job) there were NO reserved spots, then one days 3 spots are reserved for "Facilities Staff." And guess who keeps the paint?

I've been here over a year and let me tell you this is by far the most ridiculous place when it comes to reserved parking.
I mean when you get a damn OMBUDSMAN a reserved parking, then you know the lines have been crossed. I mean what do they do that they deserve a reserved parking place. As far as I have seen they should be walking a bit more There has been instances where their assistance is required and they don't even have a weekend contact same as the red cross.
I'm going to start making my own reserved parking spots too!!!!

I know it is a RANT thread, but let's add a little bit of history to it. When Chili's first opened the spot in question was "CFAY CO" reserved parking. The CO of CFAY stated openly in the Seahawk that he was donating his reserved spot at Chili's to the CPO's (including all CPO's, SCPO's & MCPO's) as they work hard and deserve his spot.

I honestly didn't like the previous CO of this base, but he did some stand up things (such as this) to recognize the hard working men & women of the service at all levels. The same goes with the OMBUDSMAN spots...I personally think they are ridiculous, but it is his decision to make.

***FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW...I AM NOT A CPO OR EVEN ACTIVE DUTY*** So don't think I posted this because I like that spot. I am against all forms of reserved parking except Handicap spots(in moderation).

Hey, some ombudsman actually help people out. I know the 7th Fleet's ombudsman helped me out so much when I was fighting to get out here. I appreciate all her help, and I know some other ombudsman might not be doing a good enough job for you, but that's when you take it up with someone higher up whom the ombudsman "works" for.

Amber, I agree with you that the 7th Fleet Ombusdman does an awesome job and really cares. And at nearly 18 years of following my husband in the Navy I have always had positive interactions with various ombudsmen.

That being said, like Wilson, I am not in favor of ANY reserved parking spots besides handicapped.
When my children were young there weren't any spots allocated for young mom's and I certainly survived! I always see so many of those privileged spots empty where ever I go and wonder "Who enforces these spots?" and "Is there some kind of fine if you are caught parking in one you are not 'authorized to park in'?" Give me a break! What a waste.

Guess in the day and age of 'I am entitiled!' and 'I deserve!' we will always have some jockeying for top spot!

I agree that Ombudsman personnel assist a lot and are good for the community...so are Doctors, Nurses, Dentists, Cops, Mum's with kids, Mum's expecting kids, Father's shopping for their kids... Are we not appreciating them if we don't give them a parking spot? If a doctor saves my life, I appreciate it...still think he should have to drive around to find a spot to park.

Exactly Wilson! WHO gets to decide who is more improtant? What a slippery slope. How nauseating. It creates such hate and division.

It seems like so many people feel that 'they' deserve. When did we as a society stop just caring about doing the right thing without expectation of 'something' in return? Grow up - it is NOT all about you!

I'll advocate the Expectant Mothers spot any day though. Those last few weeks of pregnancy are generally hell and not having to walk an extra 10 feet when you're carrying a small elephant in your belly, haven't seen your swollen sausage toes in months and can't walk more than a few steps without accidentally peeing on yourself is one small luxury for the about to pop mama.

I am going to argue partially against you...and partially with you. How about get rid of "Expectant Mothers" and replace that with "Mum's in their third trimester" because I could care less about a mum three months pregnant as they need the exercise anyway.

Or better yet...just have the hospital issue third trimester mum's a temp handicap parking pass

Can I get Ensign George Bull?

Nah, not a name... how about specialist titles instead!

For example, next to Chili's :  Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Or in the best spot on the lot put : "Nice Person" and on the worst:  "Miserable Grump"

Or recycle some of the classics:
    "ID Ten T"
    "Grid Square Coordinator"

    Or start a trend:
    "2010 Cubicle 4Square Champion"
    right next to
    "2010 Cubicle 4Square Team Champion"
    along with
    "2010 Cubicle 4Square Division Leader"

Three is probably all you can work in on this one.  Target you building carefully, lest a wrathful ICE decend.. or perhaps to hopefully attract an ICE...

There has got to be a good spot for "Martinet" somewhere.  Avoiding witnesses is probably best on this one...

    Or utterly meaningless:
    Chief Metrics Producer
    Central Paradigm Facilitator
    Lead Factors Agent
    Central Interactions Engineer
    etc...

OMG ok I think I've stopped laughing long enough to type coherently lol. Those are, quite simply, AWESOME.

Wilson - I totally agree about giving third trimester handicap stickers. They do that for the hospital parking anyway - and I would rather see that expectant mothers spot at the NEX turned into something along those lines.

Too often I have seen the same car parked in the "15 minute shopper" spot for over an hour. It irritates me. Get rid of that spot, turn it into a 3rd Trimester spot.

LMAO, we had JO parking at the club in Oceana, those buggers.

I agree on that 15 minute parking. Get rid of it, it's totally abused by a-holes.

And lets not use the argument that Ombudsmen needs a little more walking. A lot of Sailors (well, a lot of people) on this base need some more walking too, it's a weak argument and just makes you look like an ass. But other than that, I don't have an opinion on that parking spot.

We're having another parking spot rant? How about you just park where you please, then shrug your shoulders when someone that the spot was originally intended for complains about it? Seems to be the popular response, anyways. Of course, the only exception would be moms about to pop. And I agree with Liz. Walking does wonders.

Too many people competing over too few resources. It is not feasible to equitably apportion reserved parking for all deserving groups. Realistically there's going to be exceptions like "disabled" which is mandated. Additionally, a couple for Flag Officers and probably CFAY. Other than those exceptions, there should be no other reserved parking. Once you start making more exceptions, other "Deserving groups" will "Demand their's".

@ Wilson - Thanks for the history on the spot. Had I known that in the first place I wouldn't have ranted about it. ;-)

I know the parking here is atrocious, but CFAY (and CNFJ to an extent) have much say in the space reservation realm. If CFAY wants to have designated parking for E1 to E3 personnel with less than 1 year of service in front of the NEX, so be it. Of course there will be some angry people at that one...

I think it should be first come first served with minor exceptions. In Norfolk and Mayport the CO/XO/CMC/Dept Heads and Bull Ens all had reserved spots on the pier (then close to the pier after 9/11). Most of the base parking had reserved spots for CO/O6/CMC. Handi-capable spots are a requirement and I really like the idea of giving a temp hani-capable pass to 3rd trimester.

Delete the OMBUDSMAN spot, delete the 15 minute spots, delete the "mom's with toddlers" spots... I've seen them all abused. My favorite was the guy the parked in the "expectant mothers" spot, I asked if he was preggers, his reply, "no, but my wife is". Of course she was NOT with him...

Or we could do parking based on a random equation... Take the 3rd number of your sponsor's SSN, multiply by your golf handicap (assume 15 if not a golfer), add the number of belt loops on your pants, divide by the number of pets (and/or children) you have. Take this number and add it to your vehicle's length, then divide by the weight. Lowest number gets to park closest. I think this way would be fair.

You're right, the Bull is the most senior Ensign. In MOST sea going commands the Bull is tasked with "harassing" other, more senior, members of the wardroom (among other, more serious duties). S/he gets a parking space mainly as a joke, I've seen the Bull moving the reserved signs to random spots in a parking lot, leaving his where the CO normally parks.

This really wasn't a big issue when the parking was on the pier next to the ship, but since the leadership is parking in the lots with the rest of us, it would be nice if they pared down the # of spots they take.

LOL! I have to agree with this, when my husband and I noticed these signs up, he almost died, and actually he's parked in it to run into starbucks before, since of course the 15 minute space was taken by someone who came out with a cartfull of items (i'm sure they were in there for more than 15minutes!).......
I do agree that 3rd trimesters deserve reserved parking...but I have to say even those spots at the hospital get abused. When I was preggo last year, the same car was parked in that space nearly everytime I went into the doc with no sign in the winshield, then one day they came out and I noticed it was a person who worked there! WTF?

I didn't sense hostility... just that they were one of many beneficiaries of reserved-parking-creep, which is where the real hostility is at.

Though, knowing the history of that spot at Chili's makes it all cool.

I don't have hostility towards ombudsmen, if there were actually official duties to be taken care of at the exchange, then maybe just maybe I wouldn't have a problem with a reserved spot, but really at the exchange? C'mon now!

Agreed. I can see a 15 minute spot for pick-up, and obviously the handicapped spots, but it's not like it's usually hard to find a spot over there. And usually a close spot. Not really sure why any other reserved spots are needed at Chili's.

I personally have always believed that the only reserved spots that should be anywhere for anyone is for handicapped people and pregnant women. Everyone else should get off there lazy butt and walk like the rest of us, oh...I forgot some people don't even have to drive...normally one's with reserved spots...they have someone to drive them around...makes em look important and keeps them from getting in accidents so they can complain about how many other people get into accidents or break driving laws...thus creating new regulations to further take away any rights we did have. Anyway...someone might use their computer to create something...for example the cars are all identified in a certain way so that they won't get a ticket for parking there...someone could simply make the design on their computer or get a magnetic one made and fill up all those " all the time" empty parking spaces similar to all of those people who purchase the handicapped sticker off base at any store and display it on their cars even though they are not handicapped in order to get a closer parking spot. It seems like there must be a hundred Generals/Colonels where I am at.

Not sure who is enforcing these spots, but today at the NEX there was a call out over the store intercom about someone being parked in the CO spot. Thought it was interesting. Probably one of the spouses wearing their active duty rank again.

Another spot I wasn't sure about was the "FRS" reserved spot in the lot between the bowling ally and the high school. The FRS is the head person in the local teachers union. Why do they get a spot?

If we are going to do designated parking for the Ombudsman, then it should be in the places where they usually need to go the most: i.e., PSD, Hospital, CRC or Chapel (that could be the same spot as they are next to each other) but I agree, the Exchange???

As far as the CO parking spaces, one of the things to look at is the many Civilian GS-15's who have CO stickers on their windows who haven't even served a day in the military at all, but yet they get ALL the benefits and then some of the CO's.

One last thing, with those CO/XO/CMC spots, near the pier, commands or the other places on base, many times they have meetings throughout the day and without the "reserved parking" they would be spending a lot of time trying to find a place to park. Lastly, I guess that is one of the perks that goes with the "responsibilities" of the job, or the many years they have served!

No need to be rude, even though I think the ombudsman parking spot wasn't the best use of space. I want to know why the NEX Car Rental has taken over most of the parking lot near Chili's.

Not sure about the FRS, but there's a spot for the Professional Technical Studies or Cooperative Work Experience or something like that. It's a reserved spot across from the Kinnick courtyard. I think that's a GREAT thing they did because the person who is in charge of that is out and about in the community checking up on the kids and their jobs. So they need a spot.

Get rid of all reserved spaces. start over with one or two spaces for official command vehicle spaces. If you are not driven around in an official command vehicle, you are as important as I am and can walk an extra 50 feet.

I agree! The parking lot thing is just for those who literally dont have anything else going on. Go try to park out in town (YOU GOTTA PAY) except at Livin and Ave. So let it go! The next parking spot may be for "electric vehicles" and "Lt. Warren Buffet".
