My husband and I are looking for someone to take care of our 13 month old daughter while we work.  We are both active duty and we left her in the U.S. with my mother while we get settled.

Official base childcare tells us everything is full and honestly, the indifference and attitude of the desk staff has not left me comfortable with the care in general.  If anyone has advice or experience with the CDC or possibly if you are a stay at home spouse with a child of similar age and would be interested in caring for her, please contact me.  We miss our baby and are desperate to bring her here, but want to be sure we have a nuturing place for her to be while we work.

    Thank you.

Yes we all get the rudeness from people who work on base. It happends to both dependant and service memeber and it happends everywhere.
So what you need to do is look around base. There is most likely more than one CDC. Here in okinawa on Kadena there are about 6 CDCs or so that I know of and I think there are a few more. So what you want to do is go be a pain in the butt!!!!!BE PUSHY!!!!!!! Go to all of them (dont call) its easy to ignore you and be rude to you on the phone.
Now a good CDC will be full and they will offer to put you on a waiting list. Also your little one isnt there yet there might be someone PCSing around the time she gets to you. Remeber to ask ask ask dont let the person your talking to side track you. Take paper and pen if you have too. Now the waiting list sounds long but it might only take a few weeks to get in. And they also have to set up an appointment with you to see your LES ect because they are scaled to your paygrade. So the application takes some work. But before you go through the application process ask to see the room. Ask to talk to some of the staff. They should have no problem with this. If they do move on to the next one. Oh and in my experiance all the on base CDCs arerun under the same guidlines but are each indepenant. Meaning if you apply for one that doesnt mean you have applyed for all of them.

Another option is to go down to the family service center. What your going to ask for is the list of family care providers. These are dependants that usually live on base and have gotten a child care license through the millitary. So they are in home daycare providers. You want to call them and you know visit their home and see how they do things. Also see if they have a list of off base preschools or monisory schools. Yes I know this sounds weird but here in Japan they start thier kids at around age 1. Or atleast they do in Okinawa Im pretty sure its the same in mainland. Also check out the threads on this site for preschools they have been talked about a few times. I know it takes time but its your baby. You gotta make time to make sure they are taken care of properly

So deep breath its okay. Im sorry they were rude to you. I hate it when I am treated like that too. And remeber there are always other options.
I wish I could give you names of places but Im too far south for you. I dont know of any in mainland. But I know there are lots of people out there where you are I hope they can help you more.

Don't let the attitude of the front desk staff discourage you; it's your child's teachers and aides you should be concerned about, as they will be the adults your child will come in contact with the most at CDC. Fill out a Request For Care form to get the ball rolling...you can pick one up from any CDC, or even do it online, which is what I did. (Here's the link: https://qol2.navyaims.net/CYPWEB/Web/RFC/RequestForCare.aspx) It might take weeks for your child to be offered a spot, but if you're not on that list, you won't even be considered. Good luck!

The CDC folks in Yoko base are always rude but don't worry I hear their teachers are pretty nice... My daughters are actually in the Ikego and its nice. They have cameras and solid routines, along with a paper they give to you everyday telling you when they ate, napped and their diaper changes.
Don't be discouraged about them being full. Yokosuka CDC almost always is. When we got here we had the same problem, but the bright side is that you are dual military then you go to the top of the list as first priority and in the mean time they should work with you. They had my child going to the hourly center as full time normal hours until a spot opened up for us.
I also happened to know that they work faster if you have someone from the chain of command go with you.

Oh Cris while you are sofa status if you provide over "X" amount of hours per week taking care of someone eles child, you have to be certified. Im not trying to be mean I just dont want anyone to get into trouble. But the good news is I think its free to get certified for in home daycare here in Japan.

Hi all. Yes, getting certified here in Yokosuka is free, but if you plan on watching someone's child (even as a certified babysitter) more than 10 hours a week, you'd have to go through CDH certification. That is also free, but a huge pain in the butt, but totally worth it if you have the time and heart to be with kids. I've gone through it. The rules about child care on this base are very strict and you could actually get in trouble if it was reported that you were watching kids in your home more than 10 hours a week. I think it's bull, and Ill keep my negative comments and thoughts about the matter to myself. I think we should all be able to help each other out and that it should only be the business of those involved. I would recommend keeping your offers in private messaging. Babysitting is ok, but full time child care for someone is a different matter. I for one would offer myself if I wasn't going to be gone a whole month in October. Good luck!

momto3~to get a list of the home providers you must go upstairs to the MWR office which is above the furniture store...unless they have changed it...
The CDC for preschool age is always full at Ikego and hourly is a hit or miss for us mom's who need it for doctor's appointments..
Good Luck and just like a previous poster said, since you are dual military you go ahead of others.

I appreciate everyone's input.  I especially appreciate the reassurances that the care in the CDC is good.

To clarify my last post, we are on the main Yokosuka base.  I have actually already pursued every official childcare option available on base and have been told that they are all full.  They are also refusing to even put us on the waiting list for our infant daughter because she's not physically here.   Nevermind the circular arguement that the only reason we left her behind was because we feared childcare would not be available.

If it's of interest to anyone, I was also told today that being dual military does not give you priority for after school care(we have two older children as well) only for the CDC.  I'm not sure how my command is going to react when I have to leave work at 1400 to care for my child.

I have tried to reserve judgement until I was sure I had exhausted all the options, but this system is apparently completely inadequate for the needs that exist.

I do not believe the person has to be certified if they are coming into your home to watch the child, they may need permission to be "running a bussiness" but as far as CDH goes they cannot make you certify your private nanny So maybe you should consider running a wanted ad for a "nanny"? I do offer you luck in finding care soon, as it must be really hard being separated from your child

Thank you for making me laugh.  Next to a babysitter, that's probably what I needed most right now.

I am sure if you bring someone in to your home as a Nanny, it is different. I just know from a friends bad experience of watching kids in her home every day uncertified, that there are some people who are nosey and have nothing better to do. She got in trouble for not being certified. I am sure most people, like me, don't care. We need to help each other out. But when I was approached by a friend to watch her kids every day after school for 4-5 hours, I got certified because I didn't know if I had a trouble maker neighbor or "friend". At least I was covered. I am quite sure if someone was coming to your home, no one can say anything. This base needs more CDH homes. Come on ladies, you know you want to!!!
