It looks like we might have a mold problem in our upstairs bedroom.  From what I can tell, it's growing behind the wallpaper.    I'll be contacting my property manager first thing tomorrow morning.

I've also noticed that I've had a mild headache for the past 3 days.  I don't normally get headaches that last more than a day, so this is a little concerning.

We have two dehumidifiers running full blast.  We constantly have to empty buckets of water out daily.  I haven't noticed any mold growing anywhere else in the house but the one bedroom that we sleep in.

Has anyone else had a problem like this?  I'm hoping it's not too bad, but if it's already starting to show through the wallpaper, then I'm a bit concerned what may lie beneath.

    Eeek!!

We had friends who's house got it bad- they had to move and the house was pretty much scrapped and rebuilt. The landlord was not forgiving and expected our friends to pay to replace the ENTIRE house- claiming it was their fault for not keeping the temperatures correct to prohibit mold from growing. Luckily it worked out they didn't have to pay, but for a while they thought they'd have to.

I really hope you don't have something like that happen! I can't imagine how stressful that would be. Hope you get your room sorted out ASAP. Seems the mold is really bad this year =( Good luck and keep us posted.

It sounds like you are doing exactly what you should - run those humidifiers! However, the conditions are ripe for mold. I think the paper will need to be removed and the wall sprayed/cleaned with a bleach and wate,r or vinegar solution. I am sorry you are facing this, and it sounds as if it has already began affecting your health. Airing it out is not an oiption right now as the humidity content ouside is so high. I don't think running a regular fan on it is good as that could further spread rhe spores around(?). Hope that you get an immediate response from your property manager!

acorngator.....I can't remember for sure, but I think it's like 15 - 20 years old. The wallpaper was all new when we moved in, but I'm pretty sure the structure of the home is the same since the home was first built.

I called my property manager, but no answer.

Anyone have guidelines on avoidance of mold? I've lived in Japan 3 different times, always off-base, and never gotten mold. Maybe I've just been lucky. Two things I do: First, clean off any mold at the very first signs (black discoloration, usually starting in the bathroom.) Secondly, I open up the windows & air out the house from time to time. Also, make sure futons & tatami are aired out regularly. I'm not sure that dehumidifiers 24/7 is the answer. Anyway, I'm just winging it but never had a mold problem.

I had some mold growing on the vents above my stove. I cleaned them and the framing around the fan, but I can see a ton of mold growing on the fan behind the vents. I need to call Housing, but I keep forgetting. In the meantime, I've got the fan running 24/7 to try and suck any bad stuff out of the air.

After Amber mentioned her mold problem a couple days ago, I went to look at my stove hood... TONS of mold. And a friend downstairs has the SAME problem. Everyone who lives in housing on base needs to look at their stove hoods! And it's not a little mold, it's like a colony.

What I think needs to be done is that housing needs to put this into their rotation of visits they make --like how they change the vents in the AC/heating units. I have no problem getting in there and unscrewing things to properly clean it but I know I'm in the minority. Even then, I know there is tons I'm not seeing! This is a HUGE health problem that can't be ignored. It's getting to the point where I think housing should issue everyone a dehumidifier because the AC units can't handle the job.

I'm also wondering if this was the reason why I got sick in July --for three weeks, and it was unlike any illness I've experienced before.

May I recomend what I do. You know that lysol mold and mildew spray they have at the commisary. Its in an aerosol can. You spray that on the mold and it pretty much kills it. You have to let it sit for a few mins. Down side to this is you cant use it on wall paper or anything it tends to discolor or damage it. Then use kanobi killer on the same surface once you have wiped or let dry the lysol. Works great on tile and the airconditioners. Maybe it could work on your stove hood. And the spray from the can will probibly go farther than where your hand can reach. It would be letting the kanobi killer and lysol each dry over night that would suck.

As far as mold under the wall paper. That sounds like condensation on what ever the wallpaper is on. Maybe you have a small leak in a pipe. Or it has been really really rainy. I had my celling get all soggy you can see the water damage pretty badly I had to go run and get my landlord. Apparntly a bat decied one of the gutters for the house was a good place to die causing rain water back up into the celling.

What is kanobi killer? I use the mold and mildew spray and it's awesome. I've used the cleaner in the bathroom since I've moved in and have not had a mold problem in there at all --just gotta keep at it.

its the japaness version of mold killer. If you get it undulited its really strong stuff but it helps keep the mold away. And you can clean my bathroom daily and it will just come back. I live out in town and I love my house. I like my landlord as a person but the house hasnt been kept up on in many years. The house also has design flaws. I didnt see them until I lived here for a while.Like  I dont have a window to air out the bathroom in my bedroom. I have a decrepted fan in there that squeeks more than anything. So I get mold even after I have ban anyone from showering in there. I just wish I would have seen some of the little things before I moved in. Sorry some of the stuff braking and going wrong recently really has me down. For the first time in a long time I cant wait to move........
