AAFES Computer Glitch Double-Charged Shoppers' Credit, Debit Cards

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Processing errors at Army and Air Force Exchange Service operations worldwide in the past week have resulted in duplicate charges on credit and debit card transactions, AAFES reported Thursday.

“Shoppers who swiped their cards anytime between Aug. 7 and Aug. 9 at an AAFES facility are strongly encouraged to review their statements to see if they are impacted by this issue,” AAFES chief of staff, Col. Virgil Williams, said in a news release.

“If a customer finds a billing anomaly, no action will be required on their part as we’re working to correct inaccuracies on their behalf,” he said. ”

We want exchange customers to know that every possible measure is being taken to eliminate any additional charges and rectify any concerns as a result of this processing miscue.”

Information on the amount of money involved was unavailable.

The only cards not involved were the AAFES Military Star cards, AAFES spokesman Christopher Ward said Friday from AAFES headquarters in Dallas.

AAFES To Refund Glitch-Related Overdraft Fees at Local Stores
    Stars and Stripes
    Published: August 13, 2010

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — The Army and Air Force Exchange service announced Saturday that customers who were charged overdraft fees because of a processing error can be reimbursed at their local stores.

“We promised to do the right thing for our customers that were affected by this unfortunate glitch and we are honoring that promise,” said AAFES Senior Enlisted Advisor Chief Jeffrey Helm, in a news release. “We regret any inconvenience this may have caused and want to reimburse them as quickly as possible.”

He said AAFES employees are working around the clock to remedy the glitch, which double-charged customers who used credit and debit cards for purchases last week. The processing error affected AAFES locations worldwide.

“Shoppers whose credit cards were double charged and, as a result, suffered overdraft fees, can simply bring documentation, such as an overdraft notice or online statement, to their nearest exchange for a full refund of the fees,” the release stated.

The cause of the glitch was a change in updating the way credit cards are processed, AAFES spokesman Christopher Ward said Friday night from the organization’s headquarters in Dallas.
