Q: Are there are any plans to build a serious running track on the base. Purdy Gym looks great; however, sailors should have a track to run on instead of pounding the pavement and dodging cars while doing the Physical Readiness Test (PRT). I realize this might take some serious thought, planning, and funds but in the end a state-of-the art track would be the way to go.

A: Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately, we have no immediate plans for adding a running track at Berkey Field or any other location onboard Yokosuka base. As you probably realize, available land on base is very limited. When we first considered a running track for the Berkey Field compound it was determined that such a project would eliminate the access road around this high use recreational area, a convenience and safety factor, as well as force the removal of several of the picnic pavilions. While the idea of having a professionally constructed running track is very attractive the cost to do so in loss of other recreational resources would be very high. If in the future it’s possible to arrange a suitable location and the resources to make this project work we will certainly look at the idea again.
